I have a 87' 225 Johnson with manual shift. I want to start off that i am new to the boating world. With the footnote I just recently purchased this boat. The Motor was just rebuilt completely and currently has only a few hours on it. When I start the boat in the driveway she shift flawlessly i both forward and reverse. However when I put the boat I don't get reverse. When i throw it into reverse i also get a grinding and my shift box vibrates very badly. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if I left any information out that would better help you assist me please let me know.

Sorry in advance for being a newbie!

try disconnecting the shift cable at the motor, and shift it manually in the water. it sounds like the shift cable or shift rod is out of adjustment. it goes in on muffs because there is no load on it. do not continue to try to shift it, until the situation is figured out. the grinding can do a lot of damage.

Ok, so for ****s and giggles i took the shift gear out to manually shift it myself. What seems to be happening is that it wants to pop itself out of reverse and that is what is causing the cable to vibrate the gear box. It pops to where i have to hold it into reverse with a good amount of my finger strength.Does anyone have any clue what is causing this to happen?

Your first choice would be to require the shop that rigged it on your boat to check it out and adjust as necessary - especially since you're new to boating. They should do it right away for you since it's likely it wasn't rigged properly.. or the l/u is not good.

if you have to hold it manually, the shift rod needs adjusting, or the clutch dog is bad. hopefully the shift rod.

I was looking to see how to go about repair and checking to see if that was the problem but i found my SELOC manual and there is alot of work to repairing something like this on my own, so when i get the money im going to take it to be repaired. Unless someone has a better idea on how to go about confirming its the shift rod or clutch dog.

Is there no way the shop that installed the newly rebuilt engine should be responsible for making it work? Did it work when you bought it?

Well I brought this boat down from Virginia so it would a problem getting the motor back up there. With the price of gas it probably would be cheaper just to have it repaired down here in Florida.
