Looking real good Sig, your closing in on it now. Hope you lick the spark problems easy.

Thanks Glen I hope so man I think that alignment issue and the spark issue are going to be the most difficult portion remaining hoping for smooth sailing from here forward.

Re: Here we go with the 16ss

In my line of work I have seen a several sheared keys. Mostly they are caused by a sudden and abrupt stoppage of the engine, like hitting something solid. The flywheel tries to continue to spin due to momentum after the crankshaft has stopped resulting in shear of the key. I have also seen this on a cam gear where it was not completely sheared but but enough to cause significant change in the timing of the lifters. Although not as common shearing can also be caused by faulty starters or ignitions where they rapidly kick on and off repeatedly.

I agree but I am not really seeing any signs of damage on the lower unit or prop (however it does have a different lower unit). The previous owner may have struck something changed the lower unit and could never quite get it to run right after though I am sure that the sheared flywheel key is not the cause of no spark on cylinder 2.

I am sure that the sheared flywheel key is not the cause of no spark on cylinder 2.

That would be true Sig. A buddy of mine had a the same issue several years back on a small twin Evinrude. Both coils checked out good but the module would only send spark to one plug.

Nice work on the tin. Looks like it will be done in no time.

Well I was hoping to get away without pulling the carbs. That is not going to happen again we run into previous owner carp the choke lever is stuck solid an the auto choke solenoid is way past over extended for some reason. Will post further details upon pulling the airbox I have a feeling I am not going to like what I see.

If you run into major trouble, start an OB thread & link it here.

Lots of good Evinrude/Johnson fella's over there in the engine forums.

dude Sig, you have done a great job so far! and in record time...I really like the paint, and that rear bench. Did you ever figure where you were going to hinge it?

Like this one?

Boat and trailer

While I appreciate your sentiment GA I am a Johnson/Evinrude fan through and through.

Cut a new bow support board today, also pulled the lower unit, and started the water pump change its a good thing I decided to it was on it last legs, the gear oil didn't look like it had been changed in forever and more bad news it had water intrusion as well, the reason again previous owner. Whoever changed the gear oil last neglected to put a seal on the filler plug.

what, you don't like buying expensive parts and special tools? :p

the person who will get one with a GOOD PO is the guy who buys this boat from Sig....

Re: Here we go with the 16ss

Thanks B2 this spark thing is befuddling me. I put the new ignition system on and now the no spark moved from cylinder 2 to cylinder 1. I think there is a bad coil or 2 in there somewhere its ridiculous I bought this system so I wouldn't have to troubleshoot and now I am troubleshooting anyways.

No seal.

Water pump

You can't really see it in the pic but all of the blades of the water pump were checking and cracking looking like a dry rotted tire. Not to mention all of the tears in it as well.

Re: Here we go with the 16ss

FWIW, one trick i learned from Hot Rod many years ago is that if you fill the threads with high-melting-point grease, the oil doesn't leak out even if the sealing ring is used/damaged. i change the drain plug gasket on my truck about every 6 oil changes and it doesn't leak a drop, and i suspect lower units would be even easier since they don't get as hot. not that you should emulate the PO, but there is a "work-around" if you're ever at a loss for a seal.

Re: Here we go with the 16ss

Very productive day in the shop.

We now have spark on all 3 cylinders. Turns out I had a bad coil a swap got her right as rain. Water pump job is complete, The deck is complete with the exception of mounting the hinges angle and seat post. All carpeted and ready to finish up and move forward, hopefully tomorrow will be the last trip to Lowe's for this boat.

Since I know you all are getting tired of seeing the same pics of the deck I may just pass this time.
