I think the first one would look A LOT better with a 1950's ish Johnson on the back. Does that old murky thing even run?

MMMMMM MMMMMMM MMMMMMM VERY VERY SWEET!! Mine aren't quite that old, (my oldest runners are my two 1969 1000 short shafts)! One of 'em looks very sweet on a 1959 creme puff (pristine) red n' white Sabrecraft, (very low hours) the other (a recent acquisition) looks OK, (a little faded from the last 38 years of sunshine etc. till I throw a coat of paint on her after I test her out on the lake next week). No matter how ya think about their reliability, they have always had the best lookin' outboard motors out there!! Pound fer pound $ for $ the old ones really fly too! Nobody with a similar hp Johnnyrude or Yammadinger on a comparable boat can touch my old girls fer speed either. I have two low profile ski boats, (one fer me boy), with 115s (at the crank), I think the wakes might be 2'' on em' n' the Lord only knows how old fart waterskiiers (like me) luv the massive hole shot with no disernable wake so I can see if I can still touch the ol' elbow, (which I can). It's possible that it could be a bit more reliable but not as fast or nearly a good lookin'!!! :D ;) JR

We had an early 60's merc - what an engine. But then I had a couple of mid 70's merc's - need 2 so I would have one that would work on the boat at any given time, and sometimes that didn't work ... lost all respect for the mercs then. But the older ones are still great!

I remember my Mom's 1967 Merc 500 with the first try at the Thunderbolt ignition, (it was triggered by points). As has been my experience the 14' Pacific Mariner was very fast for a 50 hp but those points were a real issue. I was a Johnnyrude fan n' operator for years after that experience. Then in 1986 I bought a very nice 18 year old 1250. That changed my opinion, fast and very reliable, (the Thunderbolt ignition was the next generation that eliminated the points). That motor ran hard 'till late 2005: many many hours and never or very rarely did it ever lay down on me. Once that hook was set I have run and collected various black boat anchors, (mainly inline 6s). They are very cheap here in God's Country. So it is very easy to have a couple of 'em for a spare. They are similar to a small block Chev, in that many parts interchange, (which is great for the budget). They are a fairly simple design, which is fairly easy for a back yard mechanic to stay on top of. I can get a good running inline for $300 - $1000 in the off season. It makes it hard to justify rebuilding 'em, I did one 1500, (which I understand those were a little tweaked out for the modern junk fuels we have these days). I luv the old girls: fast, relatively light weight reliable, (on small lakes; but maybe not in real big puddles where a Yammadinger or Johnnyrude might be a better bet if yer life depended on the deal).
