Re: HOA Boat Storage Rules

And Plasma George? If people you know LIKE those rules, well, you hang out with the wrong kind of people. People who like to go to HOA meetings.
If you don't like the rules DON'T BUY A HOUSE THERE. It's the morons constantly compaign after they new upfront.

The BEST thing the HOA does/is ....we own land, lots of acres surrounding the community. This is why it's created. We are the owners of that land, and our dues pay for taking care of it, mowing, etc. some of it's wooded.

If it was owned by Twp, or privately, it could be sold and built on. What's that do for housing values to go from a private wooded backyard, to a row of townhouses or a road ?

The moron homeowners don't get that fact....mostly housewives sitting at home with nothing to do all day. If they'd just call me, I'd fill their afternoons up.:p

To the OP,
Simply call the President and ask him about a fence. Your HOA may have a rule about fences type/ height/look, etc.

Well, that was my problem. In the day, as a first time home buyer, I could only afford a town house. All town houses had an HOA. If I wanted MY OWN HOME, there was really no choice. Sure, I read the HOA rules, I just never REALLY expected the flower box police. I guess I expected the most trivial rules to be there to evict drug dealers or something, not to harass decent folk. My Bad. Even real police use judgment, not measuring tapes to pic nits.

The moron homeowners don't get that fact....mostly housewives sitting at home with nothing to do all day. If they'd just call me, I'd fill their afternoons up.:p

So, after you screw the home owner, you have the same plan for the wife?

And you have free afternoons? Sounds like my last HOA, retired guys with clipboards and nothing to do.

And also, you said:

The BEST thing the HOA does/is ....we own land, lots of acres surrounding the community. This is why it's created. We are the owners of that land, and our dues pay for taking care of it, mowing, etc. some of it's wooded.

Well, that's fine. I totally agree, that's what an HOA is for. Take your clipboards and manage the common area, the acres "surrounding" the community. Just stay away from other people's privately owned property.

Hey, I have no beef with you, personally (except that delusional thing with the wife). Of the both of us, I'm the one with the 'live and let live' mentality, which is my point. I understand your position - protecting YOUR neighborhood - I just disagree with your philosophy, and you have the clipboard, so I got the heck out. I'm sure we're all happier without me there.

I personally put individual property owner rights above neighborhood rights, so I left.

Have a nice day, if that's ok with the rules,

Now living Life with Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,

Where I live we don't have a HOA. The township states you can't have a trailer past the front of your house.

I have a classic car in the garage, a popup camper on the side of the garage, and the boat in front of the garage (garage is undetached, in the yard).

My yard is spotless, well groomed, and doesn't look trashy in the least bit.

To each their own, but I would only buy where I can keep my toys.....

I love my neighborhood. No HOA but we don't need one. We have nice boats in driveways, it's middle class - lived in but nice. Everyone cuts their grass, no junk lying around, but people do what they want within reason.

Gotta say though, if you can afford a 20-40' boat, you should be able to afford to store it. Only reason I wouldn't want it in the street is because of the safety obstruction while driving, but I wouldn't bat an eye if it was in someone's driveway. How does a nice boat detract from a neighborhood? Just buy in a neighborhood out of the price range of slobs, worked for me.

Ok its not a matter that I can or cannot
afford to store it. Its nice to have at my house so I can perform maintenance, clean, load stuff into it ect.

This thread has turn into an HOA bashing thread. Thats ok.

The intent of this thread was to find out where those that live in HOA paradise store their boat.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, but I bet you really didn't mind reading that everyone thinks that some HOA people are doodoo face poopyheads!

Note: If you are not a doodoo face or a poopyhead, this post is obviously not directed to you. Otherwise, feel free to get indignant and such.

Also, this just increased my post count by one!

Joke! Yet Another Joke! Calm Down!

HOA's has their pros and cons. I have seen non HOA neiborhoods and they are a mess. They are always older homes and I live in a newer house. I havent seen non HOA neiborhoods with newer houses in my area. If this is the price to pay to live in a nice neiborhood and own a new house I will deal with the HOA rules.

Now will I get away storing my boat in the back yard sight unseen is another question.

Thanks for the replies.

I am sorry for the mini-thread hijack. I know this is a serious question for you and that I used it for my own personal rant.

I do know that if you want a somewhat valid answer, you'll need to spend a couple of hundred bucks for an official lawyer consult. These HOA folks have a lot of time on their hands, and access to Google and whatever else the interwebs have to offer for free downloadable HOA annoying forms.

Any answer you receive here should be taken with a grain of salt, as this issue has irritated both sides, who both believe they are right.

I also live in an HOA area, and due to that, cannot store a boat on site. So what I do is store it at my parents house 30 miles away, where there is no HOA. Hey, its on the way to the lake, so really no harm no foul. Would prefer to have it onsite though.

Thats ok. I knew it was coming.

I know some people are storing their boats, rvs on their property in my neiborhood against hoa rules but they are hidden out of sight. What I'm concern about is I have to ask HOA for approval to extend my Block wall and install an RV gate. I shouldn't have any problem getting that approval. Now should I asked the HOA if its ok to store my boat there as long as it cannot be seen from the Street or the Neighbors house? Has anyone taken this path with their HOA? Maybe I should just get the approval to extend the wall and install the RV gate and store the boat there without asking for any further approval.

Volunteer no information. Ask only direct questions. Answer only the question asked with a short direct answer.
Obtain the information you need in a way that offers the hoa nothing about what you intend to do in the future. What they don't know won't hurt you.

If you find you can add to your wall and install a gate, great. If they know WHY you want to actually do it, you might be out of luck.

Tell them you like to lay in the back yard nude and don't want to scare the neighbors:eek:

LOL

I have plenty of space in my Back yard to just install the gate without extending the wall. I just see this wasted space on the side of the house that would be great to put the boat there.

I notice some people have gone from a single gate to a double RV Gate in my neigborhood and I'm not sure if they got HOA approval. Maybe I should ask them.

A lot of the HOAs around here specify that you can't have a fence over 6' tall and nothing can be visible over the top of your fence. Might want to make sure you don't have a clause like that before you extend your wall up. Good luck.

Re: HOA Boat Storage Rules

Interesting responses. We specifically wanted a home without an active HOA and were lucky to find one in an area of all HOA neighborhoods. I agree with whoever above said there is more value in a home without the HOA than with. I hate the idea of a HOA telling me what I can do and paying them annually into perpetuity to do so. That said the city ordinances seem to do some of what a lot of your HOA's do so I can't escape it completely. My beefs then are with the local government not an HOA. We are all professionals in my neighborhood who maintain our homes well and mostly keep our boats and recreational vehicles in our garages if they fit or store them offsite if they don't. I am the black sheep who keeps my snowmobile trailer in the driveway in the winter. Only saving grace is the trailer is newer/not an eye sore and it is legal to keep it there plus my neighbors are not concerned or themselves own sleds. I would be eternally annoyed if I couldn't keep my property in my yard.

Re: HOA Boat Storage Rules

I keep mine off site in an RV "bus barn" kind of place. Secured and out of the elements. Its about 10 minutes away. Have lived in same house for 8 years and have installed 3 new roofs due to hail. So parking in the garage and full overhead protection for the boat drives my decision.

I had run ins with my HOA for 2 years in leaving my boat in the street overnight after getting home from the lake. So I got myself elected to the board and now its much more of neighborly approach of how to best interpret bylaws to allow the homeowner to achieve the objective. People are happier and dues are 99% paid on time, the place looks nice, etc.

If i were on your board i would push for approval if you offered to plant a row of evergreen shrubs to screen street views and neighbor views (if any) and be done with it.

Re: HOA Boat Storage Rules

Ahh, right by the High School.

My HOA is pretty laid back. I definitely wouldn't tell them my reasons for doing anything.

I looked though my CCR's one time to find out about having an RV at your house. It says that you can't have one for more than (dunno, forget axactly...might have been 48 hours)____ time WITHOUT PERMISSION from the hoa. This led me to believe that you could get permission. I inquired about having a relative park on my property for a few weeks and was told that there is no permission to get. Pretty lame since they don't own the streets in my neighborhood so people park RV's on the street instead of in the back or side yard. Too bad rules trump common sense. Anyway, I did it anyway and had my loved one park in the yard and no one seemed to notice. My neighbors are all good people and I keep good relations and a clean yard.
