1987 mercruiser alha one

holley 4 bbl 80457 / 1376

I been looking for a rebuild kit and all I can find is auto rebuild kits. I assume I need a marine kit. I cant even find a marine carb with those numbers.

I purchaced this boat this year and Im also assuming this is not the origianal carb according to mercurymarine.com

Can anybody help me out with a kit for those ##s or steer me in a good direction
thanks,
Denny

I dont know. was on when I got it. It passed coast guard inspection.

the carb is painted black like most marine carbs are and it looks like its been on a while.

All I can tell you it does not have the metal tubes that u back ito the carb like you see in pics.

I figured it needs a rebuild and now I see im going to regret thinking obout it.

thanks

Re: Holley carb rebuild

I went to summit and see the list # for a 80457 converts to a holley 4160 for the marne rebuild. But looking around a 4160 carb is ford not chevy does this matter for the rebuild kit or am I seeing things?
thanks

go to Summit Racing home page,
In the search window put R80457
Scroll down to the second to the last product
Thats the one you need, doesn't matter Ford or chevy all the same kit.
You should be able to get that kit just about anywhere parts are sold it's very common.

A Holley marine carb without J tubes???

It wasn't stock on the production mercruiser. Only Holleys I know of were on their race series engines.

I think the J tubes and gas feedback lines are major 4160 series differnces between marine and auto and required for marine use. The 80457 is a street carb not marine. Do a search for holley 80457 and you'll see a lot of info. about it

ok

apparently what im getting is the 80457 I have is a hi proformance street carb. Still totaly unsure but lets go with that for a second since it is starting to look that way. Since the 4160 is the marine version of the 80457 if I use the 4160 rebuild will that be satisfactory? I have no j tubes but the feedback line from the fuelpump does dump into the carb, Or do I have to go and buy a new carb so I dont explode?
Thanks,
Denny

Re: Holley carb rebuild

Denny,
Here's what Holley says
All Holley Marine Carburetors are designed to meet Coast Guard specifications. A marine Carburetors fuel metering system is calibrated to compensate for unique engine loads found on boats. The J–style vent tubes direct spilt fuel/fumes back into the Carburetor for safe operation while on rough waters.
Model 4160; Electric Choke; Vacuum Secondary; Calibrated for Small Block 351 Ford Marine Engines

Installation Notes
Marine Carburetors should never be used on street applications.
With this statement there must be a major difference

Here's something from Coast Guard on fuel meteringhttp://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/fuel/183-526-b.htm

If it was my choice I would not mess with chance of blowing up and get a rebuilt 4160 Part #: 0-80319-1 and see if they will take your current one as a core exchange

An automotive carb is illegal and unsafe for marine useage.
Don't bother rebuilding the auto unit you apparently have, purchase a suitable marine carb. A rebuild kit will not convert an automotive unit to marine.

Understanding I may have a illeagal carb the coastguard had no problem putting a sticker on my boat. took the arrester off and looked right at it. That was a real productive safety inspection. I feel real safe now.

Ok if I were to swapout for a marine carb what do I need to get to fit on my intake?(I know basicly nothing about carbs just learning) any holley 600 with electric choke?? Please help

Re: Holley carb rebuild

Assuming that you do indeed have an automotive carb (I never actually looked at numbers), the equivilant Holley marine carb would most likely be the easiest swap.
As much as I despise Holley carbs, the linkage fuel line, etc would all be the same.

Re: Holley carb rebuild

The part # info I gave you above is for 5.8L Ford not 5.7L merc. Now not even sure it should be a Holley. http://www.holley.com/types/Marine%204%20Bbl%20Performance.asp Looking at Merc application guides it says should be either Rochestor or Weber, depending on engine serial #, which makes it even more interesting. Although Holley ahs an Universdal Marine model, whatever that means.

I know now this is not the orininal carb.. the carb says HOLLEY 80457 / 1376
There is no doubt I have a holley. I am confused why im being told its a ford carb now. is that possible? Im getting more confused by the minute. I was told in this thread that this was a chevy carb but needed the 4160 rebuild. Before we new it was a street carb.

Re: Holley carb rebuild

talked to summit racing. 80457 is a ford universal hi-proformance street carb:confused: thats why its on a chevy. That takes us back to the ford 4160 series as a marine replacement witch is still a ford. I was givin a part number for the carb I need match 080551 He said this will match up 100%

He says just cause holley says it for a ford dont meen it will only fit a ford?????? 4160 series is mostly universal the guy says. The problem is this is a $420.00 carb with no rebuilds availible. Any body know of a cheaper carb that will work for this and will bolt up to these numbers?
thanks

Re: Holley carb rebuild

The Edelbrock 1409 is around $300, but you will have to make a new fuel line or buy one. Most people claim it is tuned for SBC out of the box.
