I know im always full of questions...
I am fairly impatient guy and I read in someones post earlier they waited months for a decent enough boat to purchase. I understand it may take 2 hours or 2 months but there will get a point I will become kinda impatient and purchase one just to get back out into the drink.

Roughly how long did it take between the time you started looking until you purchased? Just want to make sure im not being too picky with my money nor too hasty.

In my case we dropped my son off at a B-day party and I told the wife there was a boat dealer a block away... So we went in and I was sitting on a 22' Pontoon when she said "I like this one!!" Which was the 25'... Had I given her the chance to go home and think about it we would not have a Toon today so we signed that day. Total time 1hr 45 mins

I have been seriously looking for my next boat for about 2 years now, but I already have a boat so that may be a little different. I want to buy a boat, not someone Else's problems!

Well, we had been looking for a new boat for a couple months and then after swimming while pulling my old boat back to shore for the 3rd time of the season - we hopped immediately in the truck and went out and bought a new one ;)

First post for me, Hi everyone. Took me about 6 months to find a used one I liked. Unfortunately my price range kept raising because the more I looked the more particular I became about options and length.

It depends on how many boats you have owned... The first one shouldn't take more than an hour! Reason is you don't really know what to look for, what is a good deal, or what you really need. Every boat choice after that becomes a little more focused. (my last boat took 2 years to find!)

Similar. Looked for a few months for my first boat. Found it when I showed the craigslist ad to the fiance and she said "I like that one". Take your time if you're getting a used one. I didn't know what was a good deal, at first, but after a few months of seeing what every boat went for I realized what was a good price.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

I started looking before spring and found mine in late summer... I really think the best time to buy one is a bit before Christmas.. People are trying to sell the summer toy so they can buy rug rat gifts... I saw a ton of awesome deals after the season ended... I understand you have the itch.. I looked at bunches of boats on my days off.. Even went and looked at the stuff we couldn't afford.. I wanted a replacement bad for one I sold so I understand... Found the Four Winns, hauled *** out there to beat all the other buyers.... Wife won a singing contest the week before.. She used the money won to buy the boat.. Cool huh?

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

I wanted a boat for a couple of years and I started looking seriously for a couple of months, while doing a lot of research. A good cure of being impatient, is thinking how stupid you will look/feel when you come back to these forums saying you bought a bad overpriced boat. I know that is how I look at it. Since my fear of looking like an idiot is greater than my need to buy a boat, I read a lot, did some research, and asked a lot of questions. Now I am confident I got a good boat at a good price.

In all honesty you are showing a bit of patients/wisdom coming here BEFORE your purchased a boat, instead of the poor few who come here asking us for help after the fact.

In all, read a lot of "how to" guides on the internet, read a lot of stuff on this forums, and ask a lot of questions. The more you look into it the following will happen:

1) Get a good price on a boat
2) Find the boat that meets your needs (size, function, power, and etc.)
3) Don't get a boat with a lot of problems

I also had this, happen to me. I was first looking at boats in the $4-5k range, then as I saw how much extra and better some of the boats were for a little bit more more budget started to expand to include those. I ended up dropping $7,500 on a much better boat.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

I looked at boats for 3 months (winter time), read about boats, went to boat shows, etc. I found one, went to look at it at a boat show. Went to the courthouse, and did a check on the property taxes, and about passed out. (My county is H I G H !!!!!) I bought a used F/S, in February. I liked the boat, BUT, the one that I did NOT buy because of the taxes kept gnawing on me everytime I drove by it. In August, I pulled the trigger. I bought the original boat that I wanted. Haven't looked back since.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

4 years !!. I already had a boat but was wanting to upgrade. But wanted to wait until the time was right. I went to Portland OR boat show for 4 years running, narrowing it down to choice 1, 2, & 3. I researched every little detail about a boat boat built by Harborcraft, (My #1), but for some reason could not "pull the trigger". The salesmen were really always slightly pushy, and some time later I realized why. That particular model was being fazed out, and they were trying to get rid of their stock.

Finally after a house move and selling my boat the time was right, I went to my #2 choice and got a great deal (as I bought in late October). So far I have been very happy with my choice and pleased that I didn't buy a dis-continued boat.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

Took me 2 years to find the boat I have now. Bought that 8 years ago. Coincidentally, I've been looking for my "next boat" for 8 years :D

Seriously, when I do actually have the dough saved up for that next boat and really start looking, I also expect it to take maybe 2 years to find the "right one."

This is all used, older, OB-powered fishing boats, BTW.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

I am very patient. We were invited out on a friend's boat on July 15, 2009. I decided that day, we should get one for ourselves. Bought the new boat (left over model) August 9, 2009. I waited almost an entire month!

Good luck.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

I can't even buy a weedeater without first researching it in on the internet (along with the customer reviews) until I'm satisfied. I don't mind spending money for quality, but I really don't like spending money on junk. It's been my experience that I need to avoid impulsive buying - it sometimes doesn't work out well for me.

It's been a while since I bought a boat, but I did repower a few years back. I researched that topic for a couple of months. I enjoy doing the research and making the decision.

Ditto that. Boats number 2 and 3 took months.
- Weed out the junk
- Narrow down to a couple of good candidates
- Bring a knowledgable friend to provide an initial 'okey-dokey'
- Conduct the sea trial
- Conduct the marine survey
- Complete the deal

For the boat in my sig, I looked it over and made my offer in August. Took posession in early November. Ya gotta be patient and firm on what you're willing to spend.

Re: How long did you wait before buying?

Although I am a life-long boater, when I decided to move up to a larger/nicer boat, it went about like this:

Start with a month of looking at boats I wasn't going to actually buy, at dealers, marinas, manufacturer's web sites, etc., with family input, to decide what size/style we wanted. There is no substitute for climbing around on lots of them. Think dealerships and boat shows.

Then a couple of weeks of looking at all the ads in the region to get an idea on the market prices, the inventory, typical features and to see what would be the newest used boat that would fit in my budget. And also how fast they sold.

When I found one I liked, it was a couple of days to go look at it; a couple of days for a conditional offer (he needed to fix a trim tab and check the compression for me) and a couple of days to get my check to his credit union to clear the title. So really, less than a week--but because I had already done my homework, I could have bought the right boat in a couple of hours.

That's how you get the deals--be educated enough that you can jump on the deal immediately and without conditions. Know the cost of your risks (example; worst case, if I have to repower, I can still afford it and it's a good deal. Or factor in a replacement trailer if your great find is on a bad trailer) In my case, I didn't even need a sea trial.

Don't look at a boat and then figure out if you should buy it. Instead, look at all boats, narrow down to the one you want (including age and price range) and then go find it.

Note: I started in January when the market is slow, bought in March/April when it was heating up. You can't start the process on Memorial Day. Plus I live where there is a good market with lots of choices.

PS a year later I helped by sister/BIL buy one and go through the same process, and it worked well.
