how my bad luck turned good

I had my brother-in-law and his wife were in town for the fourth and we were heading up the Potomac to see the fire works in DC. My friend and his wife were also on board. Six adults and two children. So there we were cruising up river with about 25 minutes to go when the sky turned black and the water turned into chop from every direction. At the same time, my boat lost all power and I was only able to go about 7 mph. We headed back to the dock and what took about ten minutes going out turned into a 45 minute ride back in bad conditions.

In my mind I was working on an emergency plan as the boat was slowly losing speed and I was afraid it would give out altogether. My brother-in-law was assigned to making sure my wife got to shore (she's disabled). I had to make the difficult decision of which child to assign to my best friend. I decided he would help my son who is three, while I took my daughter who is 9 months. I hugged the shore as close as I could, but that particular part of the Potomac is rocky and shallow and you really can't get to close.

After what seemed like a lifetime, we made it to the dock and no one had to swim. By that time the weather had passed, although it was still rumbling off in the distance.

We decided to go see the local fireworks near my house. When we got their, we saw that the field was to muddy for the kids. At this point my three year old was upset and crying. We went home and had a bbq and lit off a few fireworks in the street.

Watching the news later that evening we saw that there was hail, lightening and heavy rain in DC and they evacuated everybody from the fireworks show! Thank God we never made it! At my local fireworks show, they always escort us to the front because of my wifes disability. We heard on the news, that an entire battery of fireworks exploded and seven people in the front were injured to include five children! Thank God we never made it!

I'll take a broken boat anyday!

Pretty Wild!!!

I went to Shell Key on the Gulf of Mexico side for a little "hanging out" with some friends during the day; the plan was to head home around 5, get cleaned up and go to Treasure Island to some friends' house for some cervesa and food, then watch the fireworks at the beach. While we were out, a major thunderstorm came up over Tampa Bay which precluded us going back to the ramp down the street from my house; it was however, perfect weather where we were on the Gulf. I was going to wait for the storm to die down before heading home; when I finally went to leave, the motor would barely sputter and wouldn't run in gear. I pulled the cowl and went about troubleshooting to determine that one of my switchboxes had crapped the bed and I only had fire on 3 cylinders. I used my SeaTow membership for the first time!

Later when we got to Treasure Island, we were watching one of the many fireworks displays up and down the beach (you can see from St. Pete Beach to Reddington Shores from there), we saw what looked like the Grand Finale at Treasure Island going off at ground level! As it turns out, something got messed up and the Grand Finale DID go off on the ground!!! Eight people were injured, but nothing too severe I am told!!!

Man, RF - didn't you see the warnings all over TWC all day? They saw that one coming pretty early.

I saw that on the news... There were two incidents around there as I recall... One report said that a hotel close by one of the shows had windows blown out when a morter went off, still in the ground...

It's amazing how something you think as a terrible experience turned out to actually save you. I hope you go to church on Sunday.

Gotta agree with the Ricksrster here: Rubber. VERY Glad we did not have to hear about a real disaster instead of a VERY SCARY situation with all yer luved ones. I bet yer gonna get a reliable kicker fer that yaught of yers, (25 hp would get ya to shore in a pinch, IMHO). JR

Surely RF could have mustered up some jet propulsion if needed ... ;)

All kidding aside, glad it turned out well for you. Reminds me of the saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!" Too often we get upset (mad at God, spouses, friends, bosses, neighbors, etc.) when things don't go the way we think they should. But if we can only look for the good instead of dwelling on the negative, OUR world will be a much better place.

Hey, that reminds me of some scripture taken from the Message Bible Paraphrase ...

Phi 4:6 Don't fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting G*d know your concerns.
Phi 4:7 Before you know it, a sense of G*d's wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It's wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.
Phi 4:8 Summing it all up, friends, I'd say you'll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious--the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.

Yeah, I know... but they were expecting it earlier in the day and my plan was to tie up at Columbia Island if it came through. But we never made it that far!

Let's just say I had to change my shorts later....

The other good news is that I fixed my boat and my new prop performed great!

I agree with you rolmops. Perhaps I simply wasn't hurt because God wanted to continue to use me as an example of what a bad christian looks like. :)

Glad to see it all worked out OK. I'm curious as to why you made plans to abandon ship. ??

What was with the engine? Electrical?

It seemed imminent that the boat was about to run out of power in heavy chop with a major storm brewing! You never know what might happen at that point. Making plans seemed prudent.
