...as Antagonistic post I will NOT stand for.

PEACE OUT

YD.
Blahblahblah, you certainly DO stand for antagonistic posts guy. Just because YOU say someone is wrong and warn people about it, it's OK? You're bravado is laughable, and shows your low self esteem, might want to seek professional help. Have a nice day guy.

I worked for a major oil refiner. It is a by product. A petroleum by product. With trace petroleum in it. Where did you get your info?
I said the same thing you did!

Re: how to make an old boat shine again

Who cares what it is or what is in it? It is obviously safe or people wouldn't be using it on baby's butts and their own skin. It doesn't harm anything or anyone and it makes my 25 year old boat shine again.
Exactly, some people have an evil, yet comical response to using vaseline. It hurts NOTHING, and works, as evidenced by the guys who have actually used it, not self proclained experts who have not.

To the original poster, search vaseline. Some here would rather stay at home in the garage than boat. Not me, I want to enjoy the water!

Wrong again. I have made repairs, and used spray wax. Why are you making things up?

I've also heard people say it will hurt if you decide to paint it, BS, I used to run a bodyshop and guess what, you prep EVERY job that comes though the door.

Please, let's stick to facts, and actual experience here.

Re: how to make an old boat shine again

Here we go again. There should be a Sticky thread about Vaseline uses

Some clips from my other Post about the Subject.

Picts of my boat and thread.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=477473

I love my Vaseline.

Are you guys Smoking Weed or what. Vaseline does not damage Paint. Greasy mess no way. If its Greasy and collects dust you did it all wrong.
If its greasy to the touch you did it wrong. I should do a training video on how to apply Vaseline and buff to a shine. Oh by the way I live in the most dusty place on earth. Did you see that big dust cloud that rolled through here.

Reminds me Im getting low on the Stuff. I need to pick some up with a Bottle of wine at Walgreens. I hope there is a young girl at the counter I can give a nice wink to.

Also Vaseline at 5:30am gives me something to do while I wait for my family to get out of bed before we head to the Lake. Vaseline and running motor on muff at 5:30am. It doesnt get any better than that.
AZ sun does wonders. .

My wife caught me with a Jar of Vaseline and Rubber Gloves on the other day in the Garage. She hasn't learned yet about the Vaseline trick I have been doing. I had a little explaining to do. She said have fun. I said you Betcha'

I dont think its greasy. I take a shammy towel and buff it out after applying it. Takes about and hour to do and I do it once a month. Makes my boat goes faster at the top end as well.

Ok here is another trick. Its best if the vaseline is melted. I leave it in the Hot Garage and it melts it nicely before applying. I also have put the Jar in a Pan of Hot watter. Trust my never try microwaving. It doesnt. Work.

Re: how to make an old boat shine again

OK now that I got my first Post in this thread out of the way here is some more on the subject.

Once a Year I compound Wax and Shine wax my boat with a High Speed Buffer.

March through Oct I vaseline my Boat once a Month.

Step 1 Take Jar of Vaseline and melt it in a Pan of hot water on the stove for about 30 Minutes If not melted already sitting in the Garage.

Step 2 Take a Rag and wear rubber Gloves and apply a generous coat of Vaseline.

Step 3 Let boat sit out in sun for a few hours.

Step 4 Remove Access Vaseline with a Clean Rag.

Step 5 Use a Shammy or Micro Fiber Towel and buff to a Shine.

Step 6 If High Speed buffer is available, buff to a shine with a MicroFiber Pad.

Takes about and hour on my 20ft BR.

Disclaimer:

My boat is not Oxidized. Never has been. I use Vaseline to Give it a High Gloss Shine. It doesn't need vaseline Treatment once a month but Im obsessive.
Also keeps water spots on the Hull from forming.
If your boat is very Oxidized I recommend giving it the Vaseline treatment and see what you think. I bet you will like it without all the back breaking work of Wet Sanding, Ect and Expense.

I actually wax it after every Vaseline application -- seems to make the shine last even longer.. After you apply the Vaseline, let it sit for a while, and rub it off, the boat is dry to the touch, not slippery or slimy like you might imagine.

Re: how to make an old boat shine again

I inherited an old 1974 boat that Vasoline had been used on her for years. I still use it on a blue stripe around the flybridge. Not my way of doing things, but I have other projects I like to spend my time on.

On a 50footer the gelcoat has been buffed one too many times. Not much left to work with....except a new paint job. I reluctantly used Poly-Glow on her. It's been almost a couple months in the sun and saltwater and she still shines. Even the high traffic areas are holding up. If she holds up another couple months I will be satisfied.

The ultimate method for you may be to buff and wax. Depends on your priorities. If I'm going to spend time working on my boat, it will be in the bilges or the interior....one area most important to me. and the other the area I have to look at. I'm not much concerned about what others see.

Good Luck!

I normally make it a point to stay out of pissing matches but your post is the one that truly exemplifies immaturity and low self esteem. The nature of this thread has gone from attempting to be informative and an expression of varying opinions to nothing more than a grudge match fueled by your ignorance and inability to delineate between "professional" approaches and back yard bubble gum repairs. You swear that it works as do many others, and personally I have nothing against that. If it gives you the result that you're satisfied with, great. HOWEVER there is a night and day difference between the V band-aid and a proper approach to maintaining gelcoat. The tried and true "professional" approach isn't something that was cooked up by a couple of back yard hill-billies; this is the way that is taught by marine repair schools, quality apprenticeships at long established (and famous) yards around the world and the most experienced repair techs in the biz.

May I ask what your credentials are??

I do this kind of work for a living and have done so for most of my life. I have often found that there is a huge discrepancy between what one person considers "high quality" and what is truly considered "high quality" by more experienced peers. If you're happy with the results then stick with it; ultimately you're the one that has to look at it every day. But, don't expect everyone to share your enthusiasm for what I (and most others) consider questionable solutions. I've often found that it's the voice of the few that make the most noise; however being loud and obnoxious does not make it right.

My understanding of why people come to this forum is to get tips and information from people that truly have a broad range of experience in the industry. Your lack of self control IMO has brought the quality of this forum down a few notches. It's extremely unprofessional, uncalled for and does nothing beneficial for the betterment of the readers here. Very disappointing.

Try vaseline, it has worked for many of us. Apply during a hot day, let set overnight, remove excess with paper towels. Go boating. I've personally done it, it removed ALL chalkiness.

Here's a pic of my 33yo boat.

Good Luck Guys.

This area of finishing has been debated time and time again ..

I have in the past concluded that for the quick fix DIY'ers this method could be viable .. if you search ..

But its only a quick and dirty thing .. not a long lasting thing ( which might be more of an option for some ) ..

I Do Not do quick and dirty .. and Im not going to be slammed for being a high priced pro telling you like it is.

Im not a self proclaimed .. I'm the real deal .. I have no Issues telling like it is. I do not have any issues speaking my mind ..

We have a saying in the boat biz .. " when your cocky and you know it clap your hands. .. when your cocky and you show it clap your hands .. when your cocky and you know it and your cocky if you Show it clap your hands ".

Really fun song when your drinking Mudslides :) ..

Again .. I am going to recommend this thread close because its only going to get Worse from here on out ..

Re: how to make an old boat shine again

I would just like to apoligize to monk-monk and let him know that this is not a normal thing here on iboats. It's normally a very informative forum with lots of great ideas and advice.

It's gotta so far off subject, that the actual question asked has been lost. This is quite a tragedy and does not speak well for all the members here.

Monk, please do a search for restoring the shine to your boat, I truly trust you can find what you're looking for. There are many different ways to get the shine back to your boat.
