So I got into my first boat a 1972 16' Glastron V163 and Its a project thats for sure. I have been working on replacing the carpet seats etc. 75 Evinrude 115 runs great but I took a look under the dash area towards the bow. Im wondering if this broken wood is structure support for the bow or just basically a shelving area? Im a little concerned since Ive never taken it on the water that the hull will collapse and it will sink. Hope this make sense. Thanks for your opinion! Pics below. Interested in the whole story of the boat let me know.

Sorry for double posting. I didn't see the restoration forum :/

gahhh! So close to having it on the water until this. I was just hoping that wood was just for storage. Any ideas on how to repair? I think termites got to this boat. I found them along the starboard side interior. I cant see how else this would have happened.

You are looking at the fiberglass covering and what remains of the plywood deck of the boat:

Yep, some work lies ahead. None of the rest of the deck has any soft spots? If not, I suspect that the previous owner laid decking over a rotten deck. The carpet & seat bases need to come out.

Better check the transom before hanging the 115hp on it.

JNorm,

I had the pleasure of restoring a very similar boat - 77 V-162. Mine had peat moss for a deck (only trace evidence of wood for deck, and failing grade stringers), the fiberglass had holes below the waterline, the gelcoat was horrid. That was the hull only - more involved. I restored it from below decks and up and never recieved more compliments on a boat than that one - worth the work.

If you have any other questions on it feel free to PM me.

Here, yes you need to replace. I used 5/8" pre-treated plywood for my deck, treated with 4 coats of water sealant finnish, and then fiberglass encased before installing. VASTLY overkill (I am a fan of good effect) I would suggest 3/8" lumber and at least a similar treatment to mine. If you want to know more specifically what I did (added false bulk heads, improved latteral structure, overpacked floatation and pumps), again PM me.

Use this time to organize and add super deck construction in that area to suit your needs! I had a bulk head separating that front area from the main cabin. I kept my life vests, tow ropes, anchor, lines, etc. stored there and out of the way. I tried my best to keep order in there but as there was no shelving or sectioning it was really just one big gaggle.

Congrats on the boat! Don't be afraid to enjoy working on it as well, then you can take pride in what you float! Also you will be very happy with how this boat will handle. I could bank turns at 25mph riding the gunwales and come to a stop right after. Excellent little boat.

I had a 1972 gastron v163 also and I had bad floors also so I riped them up put down strips of fome like the original and glassed the floor back. Know I know I did not do a full resto on it but that was all I could afford at the time. Now on my boat that spot you show was not to bad but I dont think it was a big deal I meen you cant stand there and I only used it for storage but I would still at the least rip out what you can and cut a new floor and glass it in. Can't be that bad> Also ckeck your transom my boat had exposed wood on the inside and no glass. I cleaned mine up and painted it with a rally good paint to seal it.
