Re: Hull damage question Pics in Post
JNorm,
I had the pleasure of restoring a very similar boat - 77 V-162. Mine had peat moss for a deck (only trace evidence of wood for deck, and failing grade stringers), the fiberglass had holes below the waterline, the gelcoat was horrid. That was the hull only - more involved. I restored it from below decks and up and never recieved more compliments on a boat than that one - worth the work.
If you have any other questions on it feel free to PM me.
Here, yes you need to replace. I used 5/8" pre-treated plywood for my deck, treated with 4 coats of water sealant finnish, and then fiberglass encased before installing. VASTLY overkill (I am a fan of good effect) I would suggest 3/8" lumber and at least a similar treatment to mine. If you want to know more specifically what I did (added false bulk heads, improved latteral structure, overpacked floatation and pumps), again PM me.
Use this time to organize and add super deck construction in that area to suit your needs! I had a bulk head separating that front area from the main cabin. I kept my life vests, tow ropes, anchor, lines, etc. stored there and out of the way. I tried my best to keep order in there but as there was no shelving or sectioning it was really just one big gaggle.
Congrats on the boat! Don't be afraid to enjoy working on it as well, then you can take pride in what you float! Also you will be very happy with how this boat will handle. I could bank turns at 25mph riding the gunwales and come to a stop right after. Excellent little boat.
