durn near EVERYTHING gives up eventually when you get out the Sawzall....that, and telling it you have a chain saw in the garage if it doesn't capitulate at that point

thanks Jas. i can't claim much credit, just happened to be in right place with camera.

sorry no more pics of SC work, but pics of endless coats of paint varnish epoxy can't be all that exciting......figured y'all had better things to do than watch paint dry :D

i DID bring another tinnie home last night....not a Starcraft, but it IS tin and from early 60s:

P1010314.jpgP1010316.jpg

this is a crude popup trailer.....you unfold the double top to become the sleeping platform on either side of the main floor, then install the poles in holes and stretch the tent over the top. not very convenient compared to modern ones but i can also use it as a cargo or dirt bike trailer, and my Taco doesn't even know it's back there. and the price was right for bottom feeders: $300. eventually would like to tote the portabote on top of the trlr instead of on top of Taco camper shell for Mexico trips. and the faded-avo-olive paint even sorta matches the Holiday, but it's prolly gonna get a paint job once i figure out a color scheme (open to suggestions)

Glad to see some progress. Epoxy and varnish are my Nemesis. They sure do make wood look pretty and keep it watertight though. Like the camper, I've been looking at Starcraft pop-ups. Lisa wants one and the Sea Scamp would fit right on top of one.

Did the rainbow come out before or after the glassier was sacrificed?

Four oh is a 40 ouncer or as the guys at the foundry used to call it, lunch. I'm well versed in Ebonics, Hood, Canadian and Redneck Lingo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uoen6atxGUw F word a couple of times in this video. Gotta respect a dude that got arrested at a waffle house.

Here's Born Free, Kid Rock again and this one's G rated. Good stuff.

yeah, that Don, he got talent. rhythm too.........

sorry Don abt the mischaracterization....i've never heard Kid rock, but assumed from the lyrics it was hiphop. but there was no ref to your boat as yer tin beotch so i guess that should have cued me in.

i wondered if that was what you meant with a 4-0. down here we call em caguamas (if they're Carta Blanca) or ballenas (if Pacifico). actually worked on a case once where a ballena was the murder weapon, following an argument over insults to a woman's honor down in Cabo (treaty transfer case involving an American who was wanting to come back here to do his time).

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

no progress on the 'chief lately as i've been buried in redoing the portabote seats and otherwise prepping for where i'm headed tonight/tomorrow:

View attachment 122999 P9230456.jpg

yep, it's that time again. my PERFECT wife has given me the OK to go fishing instead of heading to GA for family reunion with her sibs. the reports from San Carlos right now are of copious bonito, smallish (maybe 7-20 lb) yellowtail, and HUGE sierra up to 40" 74_210950_210000000.jpgwithin a mile or so of shore. i'll be happy if i catch half what i did last year at this time. smuggling sevl growlers of microbrew for my CO-transplant pal and 2 bicycles for kids of comml fisherman friend.

anyway, i'll be out of here for next week. hope all of y'all have a great holiday and don't pop no arteries from overeatin. i'll hopefully have some fish pics when i get back, if you'll forgive that they got no Starcrafts in em, yet.

we came, we saw, we amused the fish

IOW, here's a link to a few pix i was able to shoot in between ducking salvoes of gunfire....i hear the 'mada likes they pix:

http://s1221.photobucket.com/albums...0Nov%202011/?action=view&current=P1010425.jpg

as you can see, San Carlos is not exactly most people's idea of Mexico. arrived Thanksgiving night after coming through a torrential rain that turned streets of Hermosillo into rivers. plunked my boat in at the marina "dinghy dock" for the staggering sum of 25 pesos/day and camped right near the marina. temps were in low 60s at night and highs of 78-83; water temp was 62-63.

fishing was a bit leaner than it has been many trips, but the fish i caught were mostly bigger, so i guess that's a good tradeoff. but there were times when i was even wishing for a barracuda after trolling fruitlessly for hours. biggest yellowtail went maybe 25 lbs and i got one other of maybe 15 and one of abt 12. all were caught trolling deep diver plugs; all i got on my deep jigging forays was a bunch of 'cudas.

the Starchief in pix belongs to some local guys from Guaymas and had an interesting homemade outboard bracket on what apparently used to be an I/O boat....close up, boat looked like most people's "before" pix but it got them out to sea and back, and they looked like they were staying pretty dry even on a choppy day with 15-20kt wind. i have more pics of this boat and closeups of the bracket if anyone wants to see em. i wanted to give the guy my Starmada hat but didn't know if Mike had any more. you'll note that although i was in the Portabote again this trip, the Starmada hat proudly shares the pic with the fish.

went out fishing with one friend in his 17' Whaler and another in his 23' Trophy (yes....glassers!) and was mightily inspired to get the Starcrafts happenin....a face full of 62 degree spray every 15 sec gets old after a few hours, and i have a sore shoulder and blisters on hand from tiller steering. i love my small boat, esp when it confuses the guys in the big cruisers and sometimes outcatches em, and i love the idea of >1 lb of fish brought in for every gallon of gas, but.....

so i get back from the near tropics to a cold front, with lows in the 13 degree range one night. glad i rinsed all my gear before the trip home!

Thanks for the pics, Mr. B. Maybe not a lot but quality. Wow - boat parking for about $2 a day. I can tell you were fishing hard, especially #22, or were you working on tanning between your toes. LOL Even had SC pics to keep the mob at bay.

The statcradft you photo of looks like they mayn still have the I/O on the boat and the outboard is a kicker Enlarged the photo and it looks like the Outboard is not running in the photo. Mabey my bad eyes see it that way.

Nice pics! That bracket looks like a swimming pool ladder, at least to me it does. I have been wrong before. Anyway, it looks like you had a fun trip!

Re: hullo to all, and hot dawg i got me one!

thanks gents. Puget, the 50hp was definitely all it had...i got close enough to look inside cockpit. that would be a hell of a kicker anyway......kick like a mule. they had to pull start it with a rope (that's why the cowling is off in some pix) but it got em home 3 days in a row. i agree that bracket looks like a swimming pool ladder but it's much stouter and all TIG welded aluminum. didn't actually look like bad engineering, at least for the weight of a 50hp twin. for a bigger motor, i think i'd weld up a pod that would float the weight of the motor to help level the boat.

interesting bit of trivia i noticed this weekend when looking at the respective sterns of the '64 Starchief and the '65 Holiday. i had thought they were exactly the same hull but for the cabin. not so.....the holiday is more of a pure deep-V hull while the Starchief has more chine. deadrise at the keel is probably similar but the 'chief flattens out a lot as you get toward the edge of the hull.

after spending most of my weekend trimming and test-fitting pink foam so i can reinstall the floor, i can see the attractions of poured-in foam.....

I do not like trying to fit pink foam board into interesting places, kind of a pain. Soap jugs are barely better. Noodles are super easy;)

Jas, the family nature of this board prevents me from describing what i visualized when you referred to fitting pink foam into "interesting places" i imagine it would be a pain

am i out of my mind to think in terms of using styro popcorn to fill the last odd shaped spaces down there? would probably contain them in grocery bags tied shut so they don't shift about and risk plugging the drainage holes. not many pool noodles to be had this time of year, for some reason.
