Hi, I have a 96 huricane E115Gledr Fun deck boat,

I notice it was acting weird as It would stand straight up when full throttle was on and wouldnt go anywhere very fast, slowly it would trim itself out and drive correctly, this would happen on and off for a few boat trips finally
i took it to a marina and had them do a routine maintenance and they said it was sound they could not find any issues, the very next time i took it out it started this again so I decided to anchor down and just let everyone swim, with in 20 miniutes we noticed the back end of the boat under water, I had it towed to sure as nothing would work and had it looked over, the plug was in and brand new, no cracks were found in hull I just cant figure out why it took on water,, I am trying to get it back out on the water soon and want to be sure this doesnt happen again,, any info or suggestions would help, thanks

Is the bilge full of water?
Is there a bilge pump?

Welcome to iboats, even with a sad tale. Is this an outboard or I/O?

I assume it's on a trailer--when you pulled it out, did water drain out from somewhere?

Does it have a built-in cooler in the transom that drains into the bilge? (design defect)

Live well or other through-hulls?

PS I can't help but read your sig name as crotch hunter. Sorry!

Sir I understand your despair but we need a lot of information, In addition to the above questions I have the following questions.

FIRST I would like to know where your location is.

Second, was your motor running while you were swimming.

If your boat is an I/O have you ever visually inspected the Bellows?

Is it Currently on a trailer (I hope) have you ever thought of leaving it on the trailer but putting it in the water and looking for where water is entering the boat?

Hopefully once you have answered this huge amount of questions we can get your issue solved, your location is important because if your near me I would tell you to bring it over on Thursday and lets have a look at it, but there are others around the nation and the world who can help you out personally if possible.

Welcome to the site!

Re: Huricane deck boat sunk I need to know why, please help

Hey and thanks to all forresponding so quickly,

Its an outboard only engine, It is on a trailer and when i pulled it out of the water it only drained out of the manufactored holes and after i took out the plug, at least that i know of, It does have a bilage pump although it has a switch on the dash to operate it and i assumed it was working at least i heard it humming,, when it went under it was not running just anchored, at the back of the boat where the boat is mounted there are 3 holes that go under the boat the one in the middle is where the plug goes the other two look likw there maybe where the water pumps out from the bilage not sure??? a friend of mine filled the boat with water to look for a leak and we could not locate it.. hopefully i answered all the questions ill look back over the threads to see,, thanks again,.

Does it have a livewell? Or a built in cooler?
The 2 holes near the drain hole, are probably to supply and drain the livewell. Or a drain for the cooler.
If the pipe/tubing inside has cracked or disconnected, it would allow the boat to fill with water.

Or, the livewell fill pump is filling, and overflowing into the hull.

Hi , sorry for typos its late here,,

It has a small livewell but only fills when i have the switch on and each time its been heavy on the back end i did not have it on, The 2 holes in the back have like white ribbed tubeing in em when u put your finger inand feel it,, I guess id have to get in that hatch somehow to inspect.

What you suggested does make sence ill have to inspect it better,,

After all this happened i did let it sit for a year now i am replaceing the starter because its siezed and the tilt motor, Well Im still working on the tilt I only get the humming from the relays even after i put new ones in, i was able to lower it from the hydrolic release just cant get it back up to get to the motor to test,,

I guess after i get these two tasks out of the way ill be able to track down the leak better, just praying im not doing all this or nothing :)

Do you keep your boat covered or garaged?

Do you store your boat uncovered outside and leave the bilge plug in?

Part of your problem sound like you have increased weight and decreased buoyancy in the aft of your boat, combine this with some kind of leak problem and you'll get the "Titanic" effect you experienced out on the lake.

Letting you boat setup for a year didn't fix the problem, you're going to have the same problems plus some new ones now

maybe your motor is too heavy?

too much stuff in the stern?

If you start with a heavy stern is easy to ship water in through lots of places. Which is why you don't stern-anchor.

we really need pictures or better descriptions. Yes you need to open the hatch and inspect.

Also clearly your bilge pump isn't working. (it's bilge). did the water drain out the low center hole when you unscrewed the plug? A lot?

Did some of the water drain out when you were towed home (meaning the hole is in the stern)?

Is it possible there is saturated flotation foam in between the stringers that could account for extra weight?

Check your engine mounting bolts (the lower ones) and make sure they are properly sealed. They are constantly under water on some boats and will allow water in.

Inspect the hull with a fine tooth comb for cracks. Leaks will occur faster and appear when the weight is applied and on a trailer that does not happen.

I suspect one of those holes with the hoses attached is letting water in when the boat is loaded
perhaps even when launched.Maybe a cracked or loose hose.If it doesn't leak untill loaded once enough water enters
It may continue regardless if loaded. The bilge pump discharge should be high in the side of the boat.
And water obviously comes out if the pump is working. If the pump runs but no water comes out it may be wired backwards. There is a slim chance that if the pump discharge is too low water may come in through it
when loaded.

Another thought to add in ... did you buy a new plug for the drain hole before you sunk it? The "latch" type don't work on my current boat and will let water in, but they worked just fine on my old boat. If a plug doesn't seat right, it can let water in.

Re: Huricane deck boat sunk I need to know why, please help

Motor is the original from the factory, theres nothing stored in the boat we just had some fishing equipment, what is stern anchor? Yes water drained out for what seemed like hours from the plug hole, and I left the plug out on the tow home I cant remember if it continued to drain, I remember one time i used the boat and towed it home without removeing the plug the thing was so heavy my tires were scrubbing the fenders thats when i learned that i was suppose to drain it,,

When I bought the boat, I had never had one and the ex owner didnt show me nything except how to drive it so I guess I got to learn the hard and expensive way !!!

Re: Huricane deck boat sunk I need to know why, please help

The extra weight only happens after being in the water for a little bit, I never understood why it would eventually leveled itself out if i just kept it at full throttle, I guess the bilge pump was kicking in ???
