Thats why you make friends out on the lake, they have the same enjoyment, I don't even ask land lovers any more, would rather go by my self, But I meet people on the water all the time and have alot more fun

Showering helps.

I know what you're saying, though. A few weeks ago, I was suggesting to my "friends" that we all take my boat to a certain large lake in Nebraska, I'll rent a large cabin, and we'll have a good ol' time. NO TAKERS!!! I couldn't believe it. Why wouldn't someone jump at it? I gave them plenty of notice. I was trying to schedule this fiesta 3 weeks out! It's been pretty hot the last couple weeks.... a lake and a cabin would rock!!! Lame a----!

Chris,

Aren't you the one with that mystery button on the dash, marked "DO NOT PUSH!"?

This is all beginning to make sense...none of your 'friends' share your death wish.... :D

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

I'm all over the 'no friends' thing. Seems saying 'Hello' to people pisses them off most of the time. I've offered BBQ to nearly every one of my neighbors in the past few months and the best I got was a 'meh'. I can't wait to get the boat on the water, just so I can be around SOME people who have at least one ambitious bone in their entire body. I really have come to think these people are so glued to their televisions, they refuse anything which conflicts with some sitcom lineup. To be fair, I'm not the friendliest person to most people, but there are others (the ones who show promise as human beings) I bend over backwards for and get 'meh' in return! I just don't get it. Was there some complete disintegration of common courtesy and friendship in the past 7-8 years which I completely missed the memo on? Should I be a complete pompous jerk to everyone I see and just don't know it yet?

Frankly, I'm just glad I'm not the only one who finds it impossible to meet actual friends. In the company of misery .

<rant over.. for now>

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

I enjoy being around people who have the same interest and enjoy being out there as often as I can, land lovers don't really know, Like I said to my son the other week, THIS is "Living" This is what life is all about, when we were out on the water and camping, some people have been in that RUT for so long that they don't know how to enjoy life and just get away and enjoy "THE peace of mind" They can have it, I might break down, but we still enjoyed ourselves and I didn't let it ruin our weekend, we stayed and had a great time swimming and camping anyway, But no stress:)

Sounds like one more reason to get married, she will always keep you company (as long as you're not fishing).

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

After taking an early retirement 10 years ago I soon found out that most of my friends were work buddys and it didnt take long for them to drift away. I focused on the finish to my garage and the car I bought to restore and I parked the boat in the back. Well a little over a year ago I figured it was time to get the boat back in shape or have it towed from the yard(wife said it looked like junk and wanted it gone) no friggin way.My boat is a way to meet new friends and even my neighbor for 10 years came over for the first time when he heard the old 2 stroke purrin . He even offered to take me out on one of several boats he has and this made me feel great.Even though this neighbor is a high roller compared to me it makes no differance to those who really are in to boating. This week I plan to take my 1960 Crestliner out for the first time in over 10 years. Good times and new people to say hello to are on the way! The good advice from folks here helped make this happin..thanks

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

Man - I thought I was the only one that had no friends when it comes to boating. I always have people in the off-season tell me how much they love boating only to be disappointed during the summer when they won't/can't go when I invite them. I must admit, most of the time it is my fault because I wait until the last minute to decide to go - not much of a planner.

Wavenby2 is right - make friends at the lake!

To make matters worse - my wife HATES boating - I guess it is a type of birth defect.

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

We used to ask our freinds out on the boat.
The majority of them loved it so much, they bought their own boats.
The ones that did not like it, well, I try not to hold that against them.:p
It was kind of nice, having my boat back to myself. Now, my oldest dughter is always having her friends out, so...

When I was single and had my first boat, I used to cruise the beach at the lake and ask people if they wanted to go for a ride. Met quite a few
x-girlfriends that way:D

I have a different issue? I have no problem with finding friends to going out on the boat with us. However, I always ended up driving the boat?. We have water skis, tubes, Wakeboard and kneeboard?.. we got them all?. But no driver other than me?. I want to go out and play too?..

Personally, I would rather go out alone.

Although tubing can be a bit tricky when you're solo.

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

I think it's also a function of everyone feeling over-extended these days, and won't commit to a block of time away from the piled up responsibilites and chores. Small children are a lot of work, and then when they get older
they get into constant Saturday sports or other activities. So your friends either have to go to the soccer game, or spent all day at one and need the other weekend day to catch up or do their own thing.
If a friend invites me to his beach house 5 hours away for the weekend, I think I'd rather invest that time being on my own boat (or doing something else) than sinking the whole weekend. I'd love to go; I'd just as much rather stay home--I wish I was a twin and could do both.
For me, I can count the "free" weekends for the summer on one hand--granted they are often taken up by fun stuff such as vacations or weekend excursions, but also by things like a wedding, trip to visit family, other's parties, etc. I just want a weekend to myself, and if invited somewhere shouldn't have to have an excuse not to go.
And as someone mentioned it's thr last minute thing. I am reluctant to commit to taking someone too far in advance, so I can't fault them for declining when I ask last minute.

I always take my first mate along...retired chocolate lab, all the company I need...doesn't compete for beverages, helps me land the fish, guards me and the rig...but can't drive or back the trailer down the ramp. I'm working on that one.

Isn't it great, Chris?
The scenario you described is EXACTLY one of the main reasons I sold my favorite boats about 2 years ago. Called up my friend & said; "Hey Randy, it's Bob. Hey I got the boat all gassed up & ready to go for this weekend (this is wednesday). Wadda ya say?" His reply? "I can't I gotta pick Blue berries!!" WTF!! He might as well said; "I can't, I got to go pick up a box of tampons for my wife"?:( My other friend (when you can actually get him out) spends most of his time whining & bitching about either mosquitoes or the sun.
