Friends are way over-rated. Seriously I am pretty anti-social and most of the time when I want to go on the boat it is to get away from people or at least everyone except my wife and kids (but on occasion I ditch them as well). LOL

Here's what I find: the people I'd want to take fishing, all fish and have their own boats. Each of us wants to use our own boat b/c it's fun to use them, plus you know you have the right gear. But it doesn't make practical sense for 4 guys to go out in four different boats. Then this one wants to go out for spades, that one up river for stripers, the other out in the bay for flounder. One wants the high tide and one the low. This one goes out before dawn, that one can't go until 10.
So it's not always the lack of interest that sends you out alone either!

It took me a while to understand why people dont want to come on the boat. They all say how much fun it sounds like.....the biggest thing I have found is no one wants to pitch in. They say they wanna go, i say fine bring $20 or $30 and lets go. They say oh, I wish i could but not right now. I dont wanna make money, or have them pay for even the whole day, but if they are with, they should pitch in on fuel, food, and hotel if we get one.

I have one buddy that goes with every time...hes great. backs the trailer for launch/retrieve, loves being out there, and pays for AT LEAST half of the bills for the weekend lol. shoot, he even helps me work on the boat on the off weekends. And the girlfriend keeps asking why he always has to go with us, geez lol.

I know I hear you I have to tell people they cant come because I dont like being cramed in the boat. I invite one person and then they usally tell other ppl and I start getting a bounch of call. Im the total opposite to many people to go out with

This is a very common thing. I boat up at Winni in NH almost every weekend, I rent a place and invite everybody. Most of the time its just my wife and son. Its kinda sad how things have changed. When I was a kid we had block parties every summer. When we went on vacation we knew everybody there. That is simply not the case anymore.

I guess that is why we are all here.

Wow I leave for the night and find out most of you are in the same boat as me. I love being on the water but I also love enjoying it with others. Most of my friends now have small children (I got a boat instead) but it is not the children stopping them(They are also more than welcome) it is either lazyness or the wives, I have one good friends who loves to go out but his wife hates the water and boats so she only lets him out once a year when we go to Mohave. I also have one of those friends that is always ready to go but never has any money to chip in for launch or fuel and for some reason cannot learn how to back a trailer or run a boat to save his life.

I have no friends.

I want to take out the new boat on Saturday in Big Bear and have called every single person I know Twice and no one can make it(Everyone has an excuse) I am about to go to the lake and offer free rides to who ever is on the shore line.

That is all, I will see you guys in the morning.

You take care of my airfare and I will cover the boating expenses.

Seriously though I can relate.Nobody asks me and I don't ask them.

I find myself hustling to get home from work...calling friends to tell them what a nice day it is and the fish are just waiting...most of them are unemployed or underemployed and they still have stupid excuses why they can't head out.

"Oh my buddy just bought a fifth so I'm headed over there"
"I was supposed to cut the grass"
"I don't feel like sitting in the boat today"

Many times their excuse is that they don't have enough gas to drive anywhere(especially last summer) man my friends are just deadbeats I guess. All my ambitious friends from college moved out of state for jobs and my lazy friends are still here.

So I take out my 3-year-old son and he loves it as long as he has snacks

My wife and I just came to a similar conclusion. We've gotten tired of calling people to do stuff and never being called ourselves. We've pretty much said the heck with it. Of my two closest friends one works all the time and the other lives 6 hours away. My wife's closest friend is always trotting around the globe with her husband. I've got a two year old son though whose time on the boat with me will only increase with age so I got that going for me

I hear you on that! We're taking the boat to the beach with us this year for the first time. My friend is coming with us for a few days. He'll help with the boat and want to go out on it as much as I do. Win win.

All my deadbeat friends are usually willing to go but I have to cover the cost of everything including beer and food and that gets old quick, they dont even stick around to wipe down the boat when we are done unless I am going to throw a BBQ or something.

I would just take my Lab but the other halfs dog hates the boat and wines the whole time my dog is gone.

Everyone always bugs the crap out of me about going to the lake, then when i get a day off I tell everyone what day its all going to go down in advance, day comes, excuses and people flake, happens every time, the true boaters go, but everyone else? flakey..............

It's funny how I see these threads pop up once in a while. It happens to me all the time. Someone mentioned ambition... I don't think that exist anymore. Half the people I hang with or used to hang with are content sitting in front of the tv anymore. Forget actually being outside and involved in an activity. Hell sitting on the back of a boat in the sun drinking beer seems to take too much effort I guess. I've got a buddy who guilt tripped me all winter about going to the lake. I've invited him out almost every weekend and he always has some excuse of why he can't. Then there is the people who act like its a pain in their rear to get down there. I mean where I'm at it's a 15 min drive for some of my friends.... Then god forbid they actually have to do something besides sit on the boat. Don't even think about them helping with gas, food, beer, soda....

I've given up. I've told some friends, screw it you know where I am. You want to come have fun come on down. I'm not asking anymore.

Most of the time my dad comes down and hangs on his boat. I bring my son every weekend. Lately I did find a girl that was miss indoors till she gave the lake a chance. Now I can't keep her away. Put her on a tube this past weekend and couldn't get her off till her arms were so tired she couldn't hold on.

I think some people are just too afraid to walk away from their normal couped up life. They don't know what to do if they can't watch tv in their air conditioning while playing on the computer and texting someone. Let go people!

I've had friends bring their iphones on the boat and had situations like this:

Me: "Hey do we need to follow the river to the right up here? Grab a light and check it out for me will ya"(it was getting a little dark at the time)

Friend: "As soon as my eyes adjust from staring at Facebook on my iphone I might be able to help you out"

Me: "No more iphones allowed on the boat"

Well said, I cant remember the last time I sat down and watched TV and the only reason I am online is because I am stuck in an office all day at work. I get yelled at almost every day to come inside and relax. I would rather be out in 100 degree weather doing something than sitting on my couch at 75 degrees.

Personally, I don't mind going out alone or with a hundred people, as long as I can go out. I have a bunch of people asking to go, well, when the boat's running, and I don't mind, just no free-loading. But hey, you didn't ask the right people. If I was around I'd be glad to go, heck, I'll even wash the boat afterwards just for the opportunity to be on the water. Here I am 1200 miles away from my boat, man I miss that thing. Oh, and I miss the family too:redface:

Friends are ok. When I want to go on the boat it is to get away from people or at least everyone except my wife, and to do some fishing. To be out on the ocean by your self it give you time to reminisce and to talk to GOD.

Agreed!

Best times that I have had in the Gulf have been on my PWC.

When I make the same trip in the boat with friends, I am always worried that everyone is having a good time, and are happy! I forget to have a little fun myself....
