Friends are way over-rated. Seriously I am pretty anti-social and most of the time when I want to go on the boat it is to get away from people or at least everyone except my wife and kids (but on occasion I ditch them as well). LOL

My thoughts exactly.:D

I'm not at all bashing you guys that ask for gas money, more power to you if you can get it....but If I invite somebody out on my boat, they are my guest and its on me....now if someone starts kind of inviting themselves on some sort of regular basis then that might be a different story.

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

Well, first of all, I bought our boat for our family of 4. I have friends, that like to go to the lake.

We keep our boat as clean as possible, and we are always out at least once a week, wahing it down, etc.

I've had friends ask me about the "sign", that I had made for our boat, and I simply explain, htat a boat gets about 2-3 m.p.g. and that it holds 50 gallons of fuel. I've told them that we eat at a very reasonably priced marina, and the 4 of us can eat for +/- $16.00.

That it costs for ice, pop, water, and that NO BEER is allowed on board !!!!! (I drink beer at home, BUT NO BEER is allowed because of the laws). Maybe that is a deturant to them, I don't know.

Oh, did I mention, that my "sign" says:

"This boat runs on gas, NOT thanx"

We have run into the same problem.... a lot of our friends always have an excuse.... Good thing is that my kids are now 11 and 7...love the boat, love to tube and the oldest is getting ready to try wakeboarding. The funny thing is that they never have problems with getting their friends to come out on the boat. Over the weekend,we had 2 adults {wife and I} and 5 kids on the boat....everyone had a blast.

Plus the fact that my boys are now in charge of cleaning the boat and that makes it even better for me.

As one poster alluded to, I think part of it is that a lot of people are economically not sound right now and are worried about paying for the gas, chips, etc. My view is that I am going on my boat anyway, so a guest is welcome free of charge. Of course, bringing along food or snacks is never frowned upon {except for any beverage that is RED>>>too dang hard to clean up:eek:}

And I have to say that we have made a bunch of new friends that all have boats....have a great time anchoring together in the cover and floating around. Plus a couple of people bought their own boats after being on ours.

If you have a 25 - 35' cruiser and are in Missouri w/in 80 miles of lake ozarks or truman lake, PLEASE INVITE ME !!!
Plus you get to show off your boat to me and tell me how stuff works because I AM INTERESTED. I was just thinking how great it would be if I knew someone who knew what they were doing w/a cruiser.

I'll HAPPILY chip in and since I'm so nub you're sure to impress me with your boating skills. :) I only have a month until they ship me to Iraq, would love to go out with someone with a personality who owns a cruiser.... 660-441-4341 Todd.

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

Just to clarify, I mentioned riders helping out on food, gas, etc. If I invite someone to come gas is on me. I don't have anyone problems with that. I bring drinks and such so I don't mind that really either. But after you've been out a few times and you ask to come it is only polite to offer some kind of help. I've got one friend who's been out 5-6 times this year. He's never offered gas, drinks my beer, eats my snacks, and has yet to help with any boating duties(docking, launching, retrieving, etc). He's even left his garbage on the boat for me to take care of. needless to say when he asks about another ride he'll be asked for some help on gas and to bring his own drinks and such.

Excluding the wife's girlfriend, I prefer to boat solo and fish. I have a few friends that come out now and then, but I deal with people all day. So when i have some free time to myself, I like to keep it like that, free time by myself. Enjoy it while you can.

I am the complete opposite I sit in a dark dingy office all day with no one else in the building(Sometimes I don't know if my vocal chords still work) so I like to enjoy the company of other people when ever possible. But for fishing it's different than boating I can only have a buddy or two with me, not that they show up either. I live in CA where most people are all talk and no go. I have a buddy that brags about fishing to me all the time but hasn't gone in a couple of years.

I want to take out the new boat on Saturday in Big Bear and have called every single person I know Twice and no one can make it(Everyone has an excuse) I am about to go to the lake and offer free rides to who ever is on the shore line.

That is all, I will see you guys in the morning.

Too bad you are 2000 miles away, I would have thrown a few bucks at ya to take me out on the water :D

Californians must not like the water

As far as the gas goes, I will not charge someone I invite. But when someone invites themselves constantly, well, I don't have much money to fill up the tank. I bring plenty of people for free, but don't make a habit of using me or my boat.

To This_Lil_Fishy: So, your wife has a girlfriend? Is that an um, best friend, or GIRLFRIEND? Hope that ain't being too nosy, but the way you suggest it, sounds like it may be good times. Heck, I've been barking up that tree for years, but all I get is the cold shoulder.

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

I enjoy being around people who have the same interest and enjoy being out there as often as I can, land lovers don't really know, Like I said to my son the other week, THIS is "Living" This is what life is all about, when we were out on the water and camping, some people have been in that RUT for so long that they don't know how to enjoy life and just get away and enjoy "THE peace of mind" They can have it, I might break down, but we still enjoyed ourselves and I didn't let it ruin our weekend, we stayed and had a great time swimming and camping anyway, But no stress:)

can I get an AMEN?

Some days I wish I could drive 2 boats simultaneously to keep everybody happy.

Shameless padding...but it gets me 400. Do I get a raise in pay with raise in rank?

I have two boats so I guess that is technically possible to keep them happy but I would prefer pulling a tube to another boat.

Edit: this one only got me to 173 so raise:(

Re: I just came to this conclusion.

Thank you guys. I was afraid I was the only one.

I bought a boat big enough for 11 and have a hard time getting 2 people to go with me on it.

I had friends come down last weekend and I'm taking the church group out this weekend but most of the year it's just been me and my daughter. We do have lots of room to sprawl out in though.

I would have thought I'd have bunches wanting to get out on the lake.
