Re: Your doing it all wrong!

I'm assuming the radar will be mounted forward on the arch, the rear of that is begging for some rocket launchers. Very nice work WZ.

I bet you don't want to get too many chips off that miter saw down your shirt.

Yes the mount will be forward and the stand for it will tip back and rise at the same 20 degrees.
I have a collector bag for the saw but i am very used to aluminum chips and dust everywhere
Thanks for looking in

Well I got a couple more pieces cut today. I did not get any further than that but this radar arch will get done eventually. Heres a nice full portside view of all that has been done to date.

No worries there! What you've done already is absolutely amazing and I know what work slowing you down is like. Glad that you've got lots of paying work, though!

Question

Question

WeldZilla
Where might a guy find the .023 wire online? My search strength meter is running a bit weak today.

Thanks

Re: Question

Re: Question

OK, well that is unreal. I just searched for 40 minutes for .023 5356 aluminim mig wire. I used google, I tried every welding site I know and it was a no go!! I get it in Portland oregon from Jones Welding Supply. I am so nervous about not finding any online I am going to buy about 10 rolls just in case. I love it for everything 1/8 and under. If you plan on any marine or machinery type applications you should use the 5356 wire, NOT 4043. It is real soft and does not offer the corosion protection the 5356 does.

Alloy 5356 is an all position non - heat treatable MIG wire used to weld the 5XXX series alloys when 40,000 psi tensile strength is not a requirement. 5356 is a very good all purpose wire. It is the most widely used of all aluminum fillers metals. Common applications are welding of boats / ships, bicycles, trucks, pressure vessels and automotive parts. Qualified to AWS A5.10 ER5356.

I see you are from Eastern Washington. I graduated from Reardan and my wife Rosalia. We know every town over there. Try your local weld supply store. If they can't it, let me know and I will ship you some just for the price of the wire and the shipping. Just to show you I am not crazy this is the stuff!!!

Re: Question

Re: Question

Worked on the combination radar arch, crab davit, rocket launcher today. I also bought my GPS/Chartplotter/radar system today off ebay. A garmin 4208 plotter and a Furuno 1622 radar unit. Lots to do!! It is going to be a busy winter of building and hopefully a little sturgeon fishing and some crabbing too.
Of course I need to do a little clean up and still have to put davit plug on port side too.

Its all in good fun!!

Re: Question

Well I have not updated for awhile but I have been busy. The radar arch is pretty much finished. The crab davit, GPS antenna mount and the radar nount are ready. I fitted it today and made sure all was good. I was very pleased with my results. The rocket lauchers are all even... Now I need to clean it up and paint it...

Here are some pics to give you an idea of where its at. This project has been a labor of love from day one. I still have more work to do in the stern compartment department......lots to do... Today is the shortest day of the year longer warmer days are coming!!

Thanks this is a fun project. I am slowly getting this boat where I need it to be. I have owned many boats bigger and smaller This has been the most satisfying so far

Re: I/O to Outboard: 22ft. Sylvan offshore from 3.0liter OMC to Suzuki DF140

Thanks guys. Over the years the welding has really been a great career for me. I started in the industry running cranes but I soon realized that when the weather was not right or all pieces to a project werent' ready they sent the crane operator home. I also noticed that all the guys in maintenance stayed, that was the mechanics, oilers & welders. So I moved over to maintenance. I make a terrific living running a weld shop.
I make pretty good side money when I need it and I am always building something for myself be it boat parts truck parts, gates, nic-nacs whatever it just seems like I am always out in my little single car garage aka. SHOP!! The arch was completely seat of the pants I just built it. It will even have lights on it, one shining onto the back deck of the boat and if you look you can see where they will mount on the sides for finding docks and crab pots in the dark.. When I get it painted and finished I will put on a lot more shots.

Then I still have the stern compartments to build.

I should have titled this I//o to outboard and so much more....

Re: I/O to Outboard: 22ft. Sylvan offshore from 3.0liter OMC to Suzuki DF140

All I need now to finish radar arch/davit/rocket launcher is a 2ft. mast extension for my gps antenna. It drilled, painted, radar and lights mounted wired. The 2 stubs sticking straight back off the arch are for securing the davit from either side of the boat. This has been yet another fun project for this boat.

Iused a Rust-O-Leum self etching primer and Rust-O-Leum spray paint.

The radar unit was purchased off ebay

The 3 led lights were also purchased off ebay they make a wide but very bright beam
