Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

I never expected this boat to reach that speed but it does at 5000+ rpm with 1-2 adults light fishing equip load beverages, ice & 3/4 tank fuel . Trolls 2.2mph with I/O at 600rpm and 4.5 hp kicker 1.2mph for around 2hrs on tank on motor . I'ts hull is variable deadrise 3 steps&14.5 X 17P prop. Approx 1900# boat.Enough room in cuddy for 2 to sleep .

50 MPH cuddy with low fuel consumption? You are joking aren't you

Maybe, on a good day you could get to 50 with a Big Block with a huge carb. sucking down 10+ gallons an hour, maybe...

I hit WOT 52 on GPS once with my BB in the 25' cuddy, but I refuse to attemp to compute fuel consumption at that speed, but I know it is horrendous. Can actually see the 85 gallon tank fuel gauge move in a 20 minute run. It would probably make me hang a "for sale" sign on it and look for a 17' w/ a 50 hp outboard. LOL

I think that your expectations are way off base. If you are thinking that you will get anywhere near 9mpg especially offshore, you're nuts. I can tell you that anything less than a 350 out in the open water is going to feel gutless and likely at times scary. Especially if you are attempting to run from Monterey to e SF Bay area.

If you run at 7mph you can probably get 4-5mpg with a 350 in a 22' cuddy at 6-7mph. If you want to do it in speedy fashion, say at 25knts (-pretty typical cruising speed) expect about 2mpg.

I have been told that my 24' boat cruises at 25kts and gets 1.5mpg if it is calm. I haven't finished it or used it yet so I can't say from experience. I know that isn't anywhere near 9mpg

It's surprisingly not as bad as you'd think. I have a 25 foot cuddy with an oval port 454 as well, and have topped out at 53 MPH with a light load and perfect conditions. I also have a fuel flow meter that alos computes MPG in real time and can tell you that you were getting just over 2 MPG. You motor is only burning about 24 GPH at WOT and 13-18 GPH at cruise. At a cruising speed of 30-40 MPH, you are probably, like me, getting 2.4 to 2.8 MPG, depending on load and conditions. WOT does not hurt MPG as drastically as most people think it does.

Going 18 MPH in rough water yields me 1.8 MPG. Towing 7 kids on three tubes at 20 MPH yields me 1.4 MPG. Going 7 MPH yields me 2.4 MPG ( I'm actually more efficient getting in plane and going 32 MPH than I am and 7 MPH).

Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

MM's numbers are correct. The best place for lots of data, on lots of different types of boats ,is BoatTest.com. One cautionary note, new boats with no stuff on board always do about 10% better on fuel and speed than a typical boat operated by one of us. Annnnnd, there are some 8 and 9 MPG boats. They are certainly not 50 MPH capable, and they are certainly not over 20 ft. and they are certainly not 22 footers with 3.0s. Which,, our new member Jon, you need to recognize. There ain't no such thing. You need to be thinking 3 MPG for what you describe as an avergae, and you also need to reduce your average speed plan down to less than 30 for all of the waters you plan to navigate. Yes, you can run 70 down the Sac River. But not for very long stretches, and not if fuel economy is even in your top 10 goals, not number one ;)

Leave the trailer attached. Wheels have a lot less friction than a boat hull. Hence the good MPG of a Honda Civic.

My Chaparral 19' x 8' ...3500 pounds...305 ci & 220 hp carb ...deep V bow rider...2- 200 pound guys.

10 miles up river..... into a 5 MPH current & 10 to 15 mph wind ........3200 rpms ( 30 mph ).
Turn around & run down 10 miles with the wind & current fuel guage moves about 2 needle widths.
Boat does 54 mph on a gps @rev limit of 4900 rpm. 175 hours on the 2002 rig. That is with a clean bottom & 38 gallons in the tank.

I am happy as can be with the speed / fuel combination & acceleration. My engine can blow out from a WOT start. So the engine is never overloaded. That may explain the good mileage.

I think I might own the boat in question. I hit 47 mph with my 4 blade prop today. I looked at the fuel meter - surprising 3.2mpg. I never would have imagined. It gets the same mpg @ 47mph as it does at 37mph

Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

I want to make a round-trip from Sacramento, CA to Monterey Bay, CA using as LITTLE fuel as possible. I guess I will have to be going somewhat slower to achieve that. I don't row, paddle or set sails....

That sounded like a reasonable trip until I took a look at it on Goggle Earth.
Sacramento is not a seaside town it is way Northeast of San Francisco.

This trip is 100 miles down a river that may have a number of No Wake Zones. (<5mph)
Then across SF Bay, past Alcatraz, Under the Golden Gate Bridge into the Ocean and 100 miles South across the open Pacific to Monterey Bay.

It's a 200 mile trip but no a 4 hour trip. Plan on 10 hours one way!
This isn't a day trip; Not even a weekender! And definitely Not a one Tank trip!
It will be a rare day to go anything near 50mph on the open ocean in a 20 footer!
You want to think long and hard about even taking a 20 foot cuddy outside of the Bay much less on a 100 mile open Pacific cruise!

A famous man once said, "Were gonna need a bigger Boat!"

Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

... I have read that a MerCruser 3.0/135 HP Alpha One can achieve 8-9 MPG but I don't know what speed that would be in a typical cuddy PLANING hull as a Bayliner Discovery 192 ...

The 192 Discovery is slightly lighter than the 197 Deck boat these stats are from.
Performance would be comparable.

197Stats.jpg

The 8 mpg happens at 3 mph!
The economy cruise happens at 27mph. (4.8mpg)
WOT is just under 40!

Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

I agree, now: 50 miles per hour and fuel-sipping are contradictions in terms. I am not in a real hurry to get anywhere on water. I originally wanted to use the term "Express" in the name of my boat, but that would not be appropriate for a boat cruising under 50 mph at a mundane speed. There are plenty of fast boats out there well worthy of the name EXPRESS, but EXPRESS speeds come with a hefty EXPRESS price which is too rich for my lower-middle-class blood. I will just have to settle for a slow boat on a beer budget with a flashy "fast"-looking paint job. I have owned a boat before: a 14 foot Lowe aluminum with a 25 HP 2-stroke Johnson. It was too small, too cramped for my 2 dogs and I and too uncomfortable for the long haul being tiller control. I paid 5,000 dollars new, trailer included, for the damn thing and dumped it for 3,000 dollars a year later. At consistent wide-open throttle, it got me 20 miles on 5 gallons of gas at the lake. 4 MPG with a whale tail. I would take something like a Power Squadrons boat safety course before getting a boat with more power, a head and a steering wheel.

"It's not the size of the boat but the motion of the ocean that causes all the commotion.", another famous man has once said.

Perhaps, in a 19-22 foot planing-hull cuddy, cruising 25-35 MPH from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Monterey Bay about a mile off shore would not be so bad. I would only do this in the summer when Mother Nature is acting mildly. I would have two good marine radios and GPS on board. Good batteries in one of the marine radios which is a walkie-talkie that floats. There is the harbor at Half Moon Bay in between which could be headed for if Mother Nature gives me trouble.

Re: I want a fuel-sipping cuddy!!

Vey, well, sir. I will settle for economy cruise speeds. If I leave the boat ramp at Elk Horn in Sacramento at 5 in the morning in a July, I should pull into Monterey Bay before sundown the same day with long daylight hours and all. There might one fuel stop in between and a little time to get off the boat and stretch my legs and my dogs' legs too.

I have 2 speeds in a boat.
+ 50 mph & quiet.

5 mph in a sailboat, with people, food & drink all the time. Also quiet.

The real question is - why in the world would anyone want a cuddy and if they did, what would they want it for? Surely not to sleep in . . .
