Oops,
I got your PM?s but since then I had remembered that yesterday I bought an attachment for my 4 ? inch Black and Decker grinder so it is a sander also. I know it?s not a 8 inch but I thought I would give it a try just a minute ago. In a very short time I got one side done on the boat, all the gel coat off. Almost too easy compared to the grinder.
The results as compared to the grinder I was using yesterday.
With the grinder I was leaving divots not moguls but still small bumpy spots. With this sander I have achieved 2 times less and 2 times smaller imperfections in the sand job. (I?ll post photos tonight). I went over the spots from the grinder and in short order they were a heck of a lot smoother with minimum removal of material.
Now for the arrogant part? With all of the years of sanding wood I am above average with a sander and this looks like it may work out pretty well ( the 4 ? inch sander).
In looking at the bottom of the boat I am sure I will need to add a few layers of material and FG resin and it looks like I will be able to end with a pretty nice finish on it. Not like you would see on a new boat but I think it will look good to the general public and not have so many noticeable bumps on it. Even with such a small cutting surface making contact with the boat it is coming out pretty flat. We?ll see as I go.
