Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Thanks fellas. I'm very happy with it - as long as I actually DID think of every little detail. I even did things like verifying the back end of the VHF radio wouldn't interfere with the steering mechanism and figuring out where the mic cord will hang so it won't get caught up on switches n' stuff.

It's amazing how much sitting and staring this project requires.

I also just noticed in that picture it kinda looks like a piano.

Yeah I can't wait to finally get the sanding done so I can paint, flip, and begin the setting and staring phase!

Helm looks good. What are you finishing plans for it? Gonna 'glass it?

Hmmm... I wasn't planning on it, but ya got me thinking about it now. Sure would make it sturdy and it all needs to be sealed up anyway...

Heck ya, plus it could make it really sleek and factory looking.

Paparoof, I would like the two hours or so back that I spent reading this thread...just kidding! I can't tell you how bummed I was to get to the last post, when I realized it was from today. Great work, my friend. I'm looking into a Starcraft, and I think I'm sold!

PXLXR, i don't recall anyone on here ever opining that they don't like their SC and wish they hadn't gotten it or had gotten a fubarglass boat instead....

Papa, i think we all love watching a maestro at work. you inspire me when the slogging gets bad on my boat!

Hey sorry about that! I went through the exact same thing when I joined this site and started zeroing in on what boat I wanted. I started reading the rebuild threads here so I'd know a little better what I was getting myself into, spend hours reading every post on a thread, excited to see the finished product, and then find out the project wasn't done yet - no gratification! ARGHHH!!

Well all I can suggest is that you subscribe to this thread and watch it evolve in real time. I'll get there eventually, I promise. ;)

And for goodness sakes, buy yerself a Starcraft already! Then start your own rebuild thread so I can subscribe to it and watch your progress!

Oh yeah, and welcome to the asylum....

Barato - While I humbly question (but appreciate) your application of the word "maestro", I know what you mean. When I'm lacking motivation to move forward, I jump on here, read up on other people's projects and suddenly I'm motivated to get back to work. It's a beautiful thing isn't it?

I really should buy something from iboats to show some support, if I hadn't stumbled across this group I shudder to think what sort of horrible boat-buying decisions I'd be suffering from right now.

There is a Salt out there that has a loaded Islander that is ready for big water fishing at a great price, no restore required. Wish I can afford it.

But I'm caught up now and impatiently waiting for updates, pics..... anything! I just got registered today so I could say... C'MON PAPAROOF, I'M ADDICTED LIKE A LADY TO A SOAP OPERA!!! hahaha! You're doing a great job... both you and everyone who's posted!

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Yeah I got one or two things done.

Built a stand for the outdrive so I can start working on it:

Then I made and mounted a storage rack for our kayaks. Not part of the Islander project but hey, they're still boats right?
IMG_0074.jpg

Then I got back to work on the console. Here you see the 1/4" birch panel that will hold the gauges and the 1/2" panel that will be part of the console itself. I wanted to keep these pieces separate in case I put in different gauges somewhere down the line. I also just like the way it looks.

Here we're looking through the now cut-out 1/2" panel at the 1/4" gauge panel, making sure everything lined up correctly.

I mounted as much stuff as I could to the console before epoxying so the epoxy would coat the insides of all the holes n' stuff. The stereo will eventually go in the empty space to the right of the VHF, and a new switch/circuit breaker panel will go to the left of the steering wheel - that rectangle and square opening in the middle of the bottom panel.

Here's the console with a layer of glass on it:

Finally, as a last ditch attempt to avoid having to actually put the transom back into the boat, I epoxied the all the edges (again) and then painted it tonight. This is the color I'll be putting on the walls and floors too.

PR I have to agree with the other guys, that console looks excellent and it will for many years with the fiberglass/resin.:D

What kind of paint are you using on the transom/interior? It looks similar to the rustoleum smoke gray that I have been using.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Thanks for the kind words y'all!

I'm trying like the dickins to get this thing in the lake at least once while the lake is still in liquid form. How do most people when to winterize and put an I/O away for the year? I assume the first frost isn't gonna crack the block, but as little as a couple hours in the 20's might? How much time do I have left here fellas? Think I can stretch this thing to late October?

Regarding paint: I forget the exact brand, but it's an exterior porch paint I got at Lowe's.
