Good progress man! Yah, I am figuring I can get in my cabin along with my two boys and still stretch out just great. Course, if they keep eating that may change.:D

(Drum roll please) And now....

The transom patiently waiting on top of the car:

Had a few bracing pieces and downrigger supports to remove:

Stuck a long 2x4 under the lip of the aluminum cap, found some screws small enough to go through the little nail holes:

Hooked lines to the ends of the 2x4 and up over the gantry supports:

Hoisted the new transom:

Pulled the aluminum cap up and out of the way:

Started lowering the transom into place:

It was a tight fit. Had to re-rig one of my ratchet straps to pull the transom down into the channel on the inside of the boat:

All the way in:

Well done sir!:D The transom looks great, and I think you engineered a new way to lift the stern gunwales, good idea.

Nope, never done this before. I have however been running over this procedure in my head for a couple months now.

Glad I can be a motivator - that's what this site has been for me as well. It's nice how that works isn't it?

I had a hell of a time trying to find pictures of someone doing this procedure and really didn't find any so I had to just wing it. Some people eluded to removing that aluminum cap but I didn't wanna take this project as far as removing body panels. I was a little worried about how to bend the aluminum out of the way without making it all crooked and wavy. Even with the 2x4 solution I worried that I'd bend the aluminum too far and it wouldn't sit back down nicely but at least this way it would stay flat at the edges so I wouldn't have trouble getting the trim pieces back on. As it turned out, the cap piece sits nice and flat all by itself, so it worked out very nicely.

How far back did you remove the rivets before bending it back?

Shoot, MIT grads would have never been able to figure a scrub brush to pry out the rails. That is out of the box thinking man!:D

Thats what I meant Papa. When I have a project either at home or work, by the time I actually physically do it I have done it a few times in my head. Thats why I teased NB & Jas about their 'stareing". I know what their doing..
I know everyone does that on these projects, or they should.:D

Didn't have to remove any rivets back there. It was all just trim pieces held in with screws.

We all understand the "sit and stare" method of working out problems and procedures in our heads, but do our wives?

C'mon Papa, we all know (and they do too) that no-one will understand the mindset of a SC fanatic:D
Just lead us to our tinnies and leave us alone for a while, its all good.:p

Paparoof thanks for the pics. Watching your rebuild helps me get out there and do fixes on my boat. Keep it up, as I need the motivation.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

I'll be back at it every night for the rest of this week. I got to it last weekend, but forgot the camera. I'll take new pictures tonight and catch you up in time for "Motivation Friday".

I got the cabin walls and door in, the helm is painted and installed with everything mounted but nothing wired up yet, I got almost all the through bolts back into the transom (stripped some so I gotta hit the local West Marine to see if they have replacements), got the gimbal housing and inner transom plate ALMOST re-installed. Did you see my other thread about the two aluminum anodic bolts at the bottom that I paid $42 for? Well, they didn't come with nuts and I cannot get the nut off the broken bolt to save my life, so I went back to see my local saviors (Twin City Outboard) and they had the nut and the weird little springy lock washers and fiber washers for the rear motor mounts. I love these guys, they have EVERYTHING.

So I'm this close to dropping in the replacement motor! Weather forecast is beautiful through this coming weekend, so I'm gonna do everything in my power to get this boat wet this weekend. It won't be anywhere close to "finished", but if I can get 'er up on a plane just ONCE before I have to winterize it, then I'll be a happy happy boy.

I also just realized the other day that I'm towing an Islander with a Highlander! Say that out loud - it's my Highlander Islander!

Dude, it should be against the law to buy a $42 bolt and not get a nut with it!

I can't believe you are going to get this boat in the water this weekend, wow! I am sooooo far behind you it's painful! Nice job man:)
