Happy Motivation Friday to the Starmada!

I "Tom Sawyered" the boy into sorting the huge pail full of almost every screw, bolt and nut that I removed from the original boat. Here he is, blissfully working away, totally unaware that he was suckered.

IMG_0306.jpg

After getting the console wrapped in glass (great idea EZ), sanded down, painted with one more coat of epoxy, painted black (helps me see what I'm doing when sanding) and sanded down again....

IMG_0313.jpg

Then I brushed the console with the same grey porch paint I put on the walls and transom wood. This probably won't be the final color for the console, it still needs to be sanded down a lot more and there's that void on the left side near the bottom that I gotta fill. But it gives it a semi-finished look for now. Remember, my only goal at the moment is to get this boat up on a plane before I have to winterize it. Next year can be about making it pretty.

IMG_0315.jpg

I mounted up the stuff I have for the console, and screwed it to the wall. None of it is wired up yet. Well okay, I did get the steering hooked up. There will eventually be a six gang switch/circuit breaker panel to the left of the wheel, and a stereo to the right of the VHF.

I almost had the gimbal and transom plate mounted and tightened up the other night and thank goodness I stumbled across this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=443365

Realized I'd forgotten this shim plate. ARGHH!!! So that cost me an extra day to go home, cut it out, CPES the h**l out of it, wait for it for to set up overnight.

Last night the boy came back to the boat with me again and we got the shim plate in and all the bolts (except one) installed. I *THINK* I may actually be ready to plop the motor in tonight.

But I just know my conscience is gonna make me pull the floors back out and wash out the dead leaves and clean off that filthy transom plate first.

Or maybe I'll just drop the motor in and go fishin all weekend.

We'll see.

Now call in sick, grab your tools and get to work on yer boats!!!!

Fantastic. That console is coming out really well. I plan to use that design idea for my buddy's Chieftain.

El Maestro at work

really gorgeous job. a guide coat on fab'd plywood/glass console to ensure leveling!?!

if i lived a few thousand miles closer, i'd come over and help just to learn from the master.

and good job on co-opting that help! remind him that if he does well, you'll "honor" him with increasing amounts of responsibility......;););)

Glad to see all hands on deck and some great progress:)

That console will outlast the hull glassed in like that. Everything looks very nice, good luck mounting up that block, hope it goes smoothly.;)

Now thats what I call motivation. Heck you even got "the boy" busy on the boat! Great work on the console, it looks really good. And your going to wait untill next spring to make it purty? Shoot, it looks good from where I'm sitting.:D

I just knew you would put my arse to work this weekend.

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

quicky update -

THE MOTOR IS IN AND RUNNING!!!!

Video to follow.

Now I'm frustrating myself with engine alignment so I can put on the outdrive. Then re-mount the starboard side panel, hooks up the shift/throttle controls, and go drop this bad boy in the lake!

and only three hours of daylight left.

Oh man, I'm close....

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

oh man this is tough -

boat is ready to go into the water. alignment went pretty well, got the outdrive back on, got the controls hooked up and working. Even figured out which terminals on the trim motor to connect my hot wire from the battery to operate the trim up and down (works good!)

but I got seven minutes of daylight left and I just went to check the launch. the water is WAY down and I don't think I can launch here.

So I'm calling it a day, gonna sit back and have a beer and stare at my accomplishments, clean up and head home.

Gonna be VERY hard to not call in sick tomorrow.

Jas I have a video coming JUST FOR YOU....

If you want I can take it out for you. I have the day off.

I was out yesterday and can not believe this weather for MN on October. I am going to Stanton Airfield for a Glider ride and hopefully back out before the snow flies.

Take the day off I won't tell anyone,:D

Thanks bro!!

Man you don't look so good, shoot I can see you are sick clear from where I am sitting. Calling in would really show how much you care for your colleges.

Maybe well enough to put a boat in the water though!!!:D

Re: I'm an owner! 1975 Islander 22

Okay here we go, this is got REAL exciting today.

As I said previously, the boat did not get wet tonight, but it's ready for a test-splash. I gotta do a little research for a good place to launch it in peace (in case I have a disaster). I'll have to spend some quality time with Google maps and the MN DNR website. Then freezing weather permitting maybe launch it some evening this week. Hopefully I won't have to wait till next weekend I haven't looked at the forecast that far out yet.

Here's the motor in place. I really, really like the way this motor looks.
IMG_0349.jpg

You can see the new bilge pump (1200 gph) and its new hose routing up to a new through hull fitting screwed down tight and glued in place with 5200. The hose is held in place with black plastic zip-ties that go through anchors behind the hose (so you can't see them).

The trim pump reservoir took a little more than half a quart of 20W oil. I hooked up all the wires best as I could remember, put a hot 12v lead on the "up" of the trim pump and the trim went up! I put the 12v lead on the "down" and it went down! Hot damn!

IMG_0354.jpg

I clamped a short piece of garden hose directly to the motor and turned on the water, I hooked up an old plastic 6 gallon can of fresh gas (and Seafoam), hot-wired the motor at the plug and she turned over for a good 30 seconds with no fire. I squeezed the bulb on the fuel line one more time, touched the wire and she fired right up, right away.

Oh mama.

She's smooth like buttah guys. smooth like buttah. I can't believe it.

(how do you embed youtube videos here?)
VIDEO

I unhooked the garden hose and reconnected the water intake line from the outdrive, unhooked the battery, emptied the boat of all tools and parts and junk and crap (and stacked it all up in my car). Stared at the boat for a while longer, stretched the cover over her and the dog and I headed home.

She's alive fellas!

But for now, she sleeps.
IMG_0366.jpg

And I have to go clean out my car and put stuff away for the next seventeen hours.
