Cool. I just put it on my calendar. My wife and kids have been hassling me about taking the boat out, so I'll really try to get there.

Oh man....

I was just heading out to get to work on the boat and now I can't find my PDF of the Mercruiser #2 service manual. Grrr....

I wonder if anyone wants to send me a PM....

Is the manual posted here:

Holy cow that was a fast response and much appreciated! But alas, I don't see it there. I'm looking for the whole 800-some page Service Manual #2. Though at the moment I'm mostly just concerned with the wiring diagrams for the 165.

Yeah the people here are the only reason I could ever hope to tackle a project like this, so major thanks. I *am* however still looking for the whole 800-page Service Manual #2, so if anyone has it and needs me to store an offsite backup copy for them, I'd be happy to.

Okay moving on to... FUEL TANKS!

Here are the ones I currently have picked out. I'm hoping a few of you know-it-alls can take a peak and let me know if there's anything I'm not considering properly. These are way less expensive than any other option I can find anywhere and the sizing fits the placement I wanna do (under the seat boxes like the original layout).

I especially like that the filler necks are along the long side so the big hose that comes down the side walls can slip straight onto the neck without having to jimmy the hose around any corners n' stuff. HOWEVER, that means the port side tank will essentially be backwards; the outlet will end up facing the bow - is that going to create problems when I'm running on vapors trying to get back to the launch? How much difference does the positioning of those openings make with the flow of fuel?

I'm psyched about getting these cause the place (Great Lakes Skipper) is in Racine, WI and my wife is meeting some friends from Chicago at the Packers/Bears Game this Thursday and they've already agreed to stop in Racine on the way to the game, pick up the tanks, hand 'em off to my wife in Green Bay for the free ride home. Shipping the tanks was gonna cost almost $100, so I'm way pumped about this little development.

Since the tanks are going under the front seats, I spent some time with a pile of boards and a five gallon bucket trying to work out the exact best position for the captains seat, and thus the seat boxes, then I'll just make the first mate's seat symmetrical to that. The fronts of the boxes (bow side) are going to be 32" from the cabin wall - that gives me room to stand on the actual floor behind the wheel. The boxes will be 20" tall - that gives me plenty of room inside for the fuel tank, fittings and hoses, and possibly even a drawer at the top for storage. I still figured in a couple inches of height to fit in a seat bracket, the seat and padding to get me to the perfect height for driving while sitting down.

Am I missing anything here?

Well broham, I do believe we have already crossed the no belly tank bridge. So, I think your dual box tank thoughts are great! Not too bad of a price for brand new gear either.

On our Islanders, we might be just about even on speed but at 61 gallons I'll out run ya if pirates are chasing us:D

Yeah man, it was hard to give up on the belly tank idea. After having actually spent some time on the water in this boat, that really would have been the best way to go. The boat sits so high in the water and rocks so much with every wave that having that fuel weight way down low and centered would have made a big and very useful difference. But I just couldn't find anything that fit - like not even close. So say the serenity prayer three times and move ahead....

I was gonna say that you carrying almost 30 gallons more fuel would add 175 pounds to your boat and give me the advantage in that race, but then I remembered I probably weigh 175 pounds more than you do so...

...nevermind.

Are you guys gonna do a Mobil Economy Run on the lake? LOL

PR - good price on the tanks and free (?) shipping too. And new tanks don't have a boat load of crud on the bottom - a real plus. How wide are your boxes? The tanks are about 24" long X 17" wide. What I'm thinking is mounting crosswise so the long side (24") is is from side to side with the filler neck towards the bow. That would put the pick-ups to the rear and you can suck out just about every drop of fuel. That also puts the filler hose to the front to allow for the drawer, a little shorter allowing for the hose.

Then again, with the fillers on the outside and the reversed pick-ups, the port tank might leave a little more fuel that the other side. And it might be totally insignificant depending how level the Islander is when going for the last drops.
