Is it OK to rename your boat?

I bought an older boat. After putting a transom in it, a new dash, gauges etc, along with some painting and some of my friends and families blood sweat and tears I would like to make the boat mine by renaming the boat. I have heard that's taboo... Any thoughts?

I realize she has had her name a long time so that's important to me too.. I'm torn:grumpy:

Sure you can rename your boat, but you MUST follow the ancient rites and rituals of the sea, enclosed herein, lest ye suffer the wrath of Poseidon and all spirits of the deep.

What kfa said. Plus, it's a good excuse for a party!

If you're superstitious, don't do it  Ye be tempting fate!
But if you cheerfully walk under ladders; let black cats cross your path; ignore spilt salt; never touch wood; and always sit in row/seat 13 - then go ahead and rename her

True "Boatmen" are a curious breed. We live for our crafts and follow all of the requirements, even if they are only superstitions. When "tradition" is involved, it must be followed.

If you even ask the question, then you might be a "Boater".

If you haven't even heard about the question, then you're just another guy with an old second hand boat!

I do boat names as a hobby, but just for myself and for friends. Be it a hand painted transom, or a hand carved and gilded transom board, I have only one rule. I won't do it a second time unless its a refurbish of the first one!

Yeah... I like the name. But when people ask, all I have is the little bit of info the PO gave me. He says he was driving out to the boat one day and says he saw it on a sign, on an old building, just east of Toledo. Have tried to research it with no luck.

Hmm Spegtoast.... WTF?!

Creative link... Sounds like a fun little ritual. And agreed.. Another reason to get some friends together for a toast before the first splash.

I don't think mine even had a name when I got her but just like my rescue dog, she got one I picked once she was mine. I wouldn't hesitate to rename a boat. We make jokes about bad juju when you rename things but only the superstitious actually let that guide their actions.

Mine's a 69 I got from the original owner who had never named it. It's still nameless despite a gazillion people asking what I'm going to name it. I suppose it's somewhat uncommon to see a 44 yeah old name-virgin boat is it?

It can be fun if you wish. Being an "Ordained Minister" I officiated one for an iboat member....and several others. Check out their blog on the event. It actually lasted a couple days.

I have called my old boat many different names which lead me to getting a new boat :)

Is it OK to rename a boat? Yeah; as long as you don't put it in salt water.

I've always been of the mind that if the boat is new to you, and not a family heirloom (.ie your grandfather named it after your grandmother) then you can rename it without raising the ire of the sea furies...
