at times i cant say no! i have:
88 evi 4hp paid 100, cant get the stupid thing running, nice low hour motor clean, but not running. comp 90/90
72 johnson 20 hp runs like a demon! new ignition, resealed lower unit. i paid 250 for it, very clean motor, i bleive to be low hours, gears are like new. comp 120/120
54 johnson 10 hp, pretty much the same, low hours, cost of motor free. runs like a top. comp 110/108
54 evinrude 7.5 a little rough but all seems good, resealed the lu, now im putting it together. comp ?? FREE
56 johnson 5.5 nice clean motor, another project po installed all new ignition. comp ?? 100.00 with tank
76 johnson 9.9, compression is 118/112, im bummed it has a leaky case. not running going to part it out
83 evinrude 9.9 box o parts paid 60.00 too lazy to put it together so another to part out.

so i bought this 68 evi electric start for 100.00. plan was to part it out bc it had a electric start i wanted for the 72 johnny. my first compresssion test was 70/80, then 80/90. told the guy that it was shot and i only wanted the starter. he sold the whole motor and i get home stuck some marvel in the cylinders. well after 3 days of rolling it around it felt pretty smooth. plugged in some gas it a it ran. not great but not horrible. i let her warm up watched it spit water. i pulled the plugs and i see its all good, take another compression test and its now 120/`120. so ...
what classifies one as a hoarder? the scary thing is i still am looking for a johnson 57/58 15 hp.

Collector or preservationist sounds better than hoarder. I have 14 in my garage and 5 inside. Mostly Johnson/Evinrude, a few Mercurys, A couple Elgins, stuff from the 40's thru the early 60's and haven't picked one to start working on yet and, going to look at 2 more today. I tell myself, as long as I know what I have i'm not hoarding i'm collecting.

Once I got over 100 motors my wife started getting worried for me ;)

Now as long as I leave her a path to the washer/dryer she is happy.

Now this guy in our chapter has a hoarding problem! lol He has thousands!

Some guys can't have too many guns, others can't have too many rods, reels and lures. Then again, some guys cannot have too many outboards.

Wrong? Of course not. Conservation of historic machines is a good thing.

I have 14 in my garage/shop right now and I check Craig's List everyday looking for another "deal". Wife's still with me but sputtering, probably needs a tune up.
