Good Morning all, ive been away for awhile due to shoveling 13' of snow over the last 2 months so ive been a little busy  . I posted this: Here last October not knowing that we would see record snow falls in years here in North West Indiana, its been so cold here lately i could hear the old Girl outside shivering and a faint "can i come inside?" whisper on the wind from the garage area, i swear it was my boat, poor thing.

I was watching some TV the other day and looked over at the wife and said "what are we doing" she looked at me with a confused look on her face" what?" she said.

"why do we stay here in the God for saken weather, each year we go through the same crap."

If you know my area, Northwest Indiana 45 minutes from down town Chicago, 5 minutes from the murder capital "Gary, IN" its not what it use to be, there are two seasons here Winter season and Construction season thats it.

its getting to the point where we are outside for 3 months a year enjoying the summer and its 110% humidity in the pool and on the boat to turtling in the house for the rest of the year and enduring the winter.

the better half is one year away from her degree at Purdue and im getting antsy to move south. I mean come on, with the economy the way it is, the wife fresh out of college, me with 15 years experience in Environmental management, this would be perfect time to pick up camp and start over in the sun shine right? we still have a good 30 years before we are to retire, if thats even a word any more but am i insane for thinking this ? shes all for it, but change is tough for me when it comes to security.

Dont get me wrong, snow is very pretty, but so is my EX wife. get my "drift" pun intended.

I mean i walk out my front door this morning and there are 3 deer in my front yard and they just look at me and i swear i heard one of them say " dude its cold out here, you got any thing to eat"

i dont know, maybe i just have cabin fever.... sure is a nice thought though, i talked to my bud the other day in Vero florida and he just laughed at me and told me he was in a tank top all day. im up here praying for 55 to 60 degrees and hes getting a sun burn, something just aint right

to all the snow birds with me, HEAR ME ROAR!!!!

thanks for the ear, thinking of sun

I hear you, Fishin'. I spent a few winters in Chicagoland and a few more just west of the Twin Cities.

I decided that I wanted to be where the weather is life threatening only during major hailstorms or the occasional tornado.

I highly recommend Texas. Austin has to be one of the best cities to live in the whole danged planet. The LOML lives there, and if she likes a city it has to be great.

I, on the other hand, like rural isolation. That's why I have been at The Hideout for 20 years and will be here when time is up.

We live in a suburb southwest of the Twin Cities and, you know, we don't mind it.

Sure, there are days when it gets reallllly cold, and there are days when it snoooows a lot (like today), but most days I can still take our golden retrievers out for a nice 2 1/2 mile walk along one of many trails they have here. There might be 7 to 10 days in the summer where the dew point is ridiculous, and maybe that many where the temp doesn't go above zero.

But it ain't so bad, eh?

Well this is a far north as I ever will go, I would rather have the beach under my feet but we do have some good weather here

That's about the average depth I'll be running in Saturday out on Lake Harris. I feel for all of our northern boaters who are waiting for the day the ice breaks and the temps stay north of freezing. Your day is coming and so is mine. Julaugust in Florida is not for the faint hearted. 90 degree plus days with 95% humidity and you just can't escape the mid-day heat out on the water. So take heart in knowing we all have to pay for our boating pleasure in some form or fashion!!!!

MD can get hot and sticky too. I've been known to jump in to cool off.

Re: Its Still a Sad Day a little Rant

As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Upstate SC is a great place to live if you enjoy seemingly endless days of sunshine, and for the most part, moderate temperatures. You do get days of extreme cold and days of extreme heat. You USED to count on a 6 inch snow fall at least one time per year, but the climate has warmed since 1996. The problem is that this area is very drought prone. A 3 year drought every 10 years at least. In between, you have short dry spells where you really get too much sun. Summers are hot and humid. What I would like is more of a balance of sun and rain. Too much sunny weather is not good for me and for our water tables. I don't see how people in Southern California stand it. The same old boring weather day after day. Too many times we get stuck in that rut. Blocked off by the mountains. Too much rain, snow and even sun can get you bummed out. Just try to mow your burned to a crisp lawn when it hasn't rained for a month and it has baked in 100 degree temps. Can you say Dust Bowl? Happens way too often around here.
You could move to FLA where a Hurricane occasionally blows your home away and the insurance rates are astronomical. We have a crap load of people from FLA moving to SC for those reasons. We also get 1000s of snow birds. In fact I married a snow bird.
So moving, may just change one set of problems for another.
On the other hand, I have been to Gary Indiana and you have my sympathy

I am originally from Georgia (South of Atlanta) so I know from experience the up/down of warm/cold living. I settled
in the cold climate for a very good reason--Playtime Diversity--this coupled with short or no travel time to each; I.E.- boating, snowmobile, downhill ski, tube, fish, golf or launch viewing keeps me here.

In other words--I Love Love Living Here!!!!!!!!!!

Arlington,Texas was once home to me for a number of years, i will always retain fond memories of there. I however have not ever regretted relocating further south. Cold weather may be good for some, but not i.

I am thankful that here in south central PA we have had an extremely mild winter. I've had to shovel 1 time. Count them 1 time!! It was fantastic. It was pretty cold though. I am so looking forward to it warming up and getting the boat out of storage. I wouldn't mind moving south. My wife and I have both said that if it weren't for family we'd definitely get the heck out of here. My aunt and uncle are snowbirds with a beautiful condo in Bradenton, FL. We spent a week there on our honeymoon 8 years ago and absolutely loved the area. I wish we could get back down.

Re: Its Still a Sad Day a little Rant

Being from Northwest Ohio and Michigan i know the feeling.
I moved here back in the early 80's and never looked back!

It still gets cold with a snowfall once in awhile but i love these winter days that hit 60 degrees. It kind of breaks up winter.

I got the beach 3 hours away and about an hour drive into the mountains.
3 large area lakes and if i want to drive an hour i have a choice of 3 more lakes.
I was out on the motorcycle yesterday with just a T shirt and light leather jacket...:D

The boat is crying in the back yard...another 2 to 3 weeks it will get splashed!
Crappie season is coming fast..

I spent some time on Michigan in the winter. You definitely need a remote car starter. That is if you don't want you teeth to break off from chattering. Michigan winters are brutal. I don't see how you people stand that kind of continuous frigid weather

Re: Its Still a Sad Day a little Rant

20 years ago I lived in Cleveland, and my buddy asked me for help to drive him to Tucson Arizona, I did and that was it.

It was Feb. in Cleveland so you could imagine, and I arrived in Tucson and I swear it was the first time I saw stars in my life, and the weather war 85 degrees. Well, that was it I went home and pondered for moths, but like a huge magnet it drew me WEST.

I never regretted a second or it. I left a good job, friends family and everything that would keep you in one place. I can't even go back for a visit now because it's so ...well you know.

Stop driving yourself nuts, pack up and go where you feel you need to be.

Re: Its Still a Sad Day a littleon Rant

northern NJ works for me, 6months of both weather, and neither extremes, and never a weather calamity. I look at a ski slope from my front porch, raise cows in my yard, drive an hour to the ocean beach, or a half hour to a national forest. deer are a problem, got a herd on the front lawn, only have one trafic light in town. and the college rate is 98%.
