Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

Hey Lowkee

I think I know what the problem is....As a fellow rider I have noticed that neighbors are frightened by any kind of two wheeled machine.

They saw some movies back in the 70s and have drawn irrevocable conclusions.

Peanut Butter between 2 crackers will take care of the barking, toss a couple of those puppies over the fence and you will get a couple hours of bliss

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

First off when was the light put up ? did he pull a permit ? around my neck of the woods there is an noise ordinance, I had a 180 lb dane/shepard biggest baby in the world unless you were doing something you shouldent like breaking and entering, the police almost took him away he really dident bark much most neighbors appreciated his protection. the nieghbor who called was a drunk and a neighborhood nuisance which used to yell foul language at me as a young child for being noisy, needless to say eventually I started to retialiate, like a couch on top of his shed, chicken carcasses behind his shrubs and RED line chalk on his cement driveway before a rainstorm (red dosent wash away !) GOOD LUCK!

Uh-uh. Mirror reflecting into a big convex lens -- like a magnifying glass.

"Uh, no, officer... I have absolutely idea how the fire started." :D

funny how i came to the mirror/reflection idea - obviously was not alone there.

Thanks for the words of sympathy and also the funny ways to get back at him. I think l am much better off only following some of you guys' advice in my head, though.
Revenge always sounds nice until it happens, then you have let them turn you into exactly what you hated in the 1st place. I just can't believe court has entered the picture. With all of the real crimes out there is this jerk would rather bully a neighbor until court is involved rather than be courteous. I'll never understand the thought process of some people.

I'd suggest moving until you consider everywhere has people, and they bring these distractions with them.

Why did you pay for the land survey when she was the one making the claim?

It's too bad you can't send an ultra sonic whistle back at the dogs when they bark. Dogs, unlike their owners are trainable and social.

Mirrors on posts to reflect their unwanted light back to them. If you could steer the light, they might find it to their advantage to remove the unwanted light. People are trainable too, just harder than dogs.

Actually if you want the dog to shut up for a while throw an almost empty peanut butter jar over to it it will take it a while to clean it all out.

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

I feel your pain. It annoys me when people have super bright outside lights on for no reason when I just want to sit outside and enjoy the night. And nothing pisses me off worse than someones dog barking at me constantly when I'm out in MY DAMN YARD. I have 4 large dogs on each side of me (2 on each side). And 3 of them are fine but one of them is this mutant huge black lab that barks at everything constantly. When her owners are gone she sits in the house and barks so much that my wife and I have had to retreat back into our house on a couple of occaisions.

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

Behind me is the next jerk. This couple has a high-watt halogen spotlight aimed right at my house. Apparently they decided one day their own light was too bright, so they aimed the majority of it at my house so their yard would only get an afterglow.

Check around for your local astronomy groups. They would know if you have "light trespass" legislation. If not, they would probably be the first to help you campaign for one. That sort of legislation would control how much light can 'trespass' onto your property from a neighbor.

In the meanwhile, if the light is one of those security types, that activates at night, I've heard that a well aimed laser (pointer, gun sight, collimator) will shut it down.

Sometimes dogs will be interested in the "dancing red light" of a pointer as well. If they are, it would be easy to run them around - once they are "into it", then have them start jumping on the side of the house (or banging into the door). If you are clever enough, your neighbors will never know why the dog is doing this and will conclude that the dog is crazy.

I've always liked that "Animal Cops" show. Interesting that they will come and take away neglected animals - such as if they happen to run out of water for a second. Or can't reach it because they are chained up - because they keep jumping onto the side of the house.

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

After reading some of this, I too am glad I have a great neighbor that hates the same things I do. :D

Many years ago I did have a neighbor who had a beagle that would bark at anything. The owner finally told me that I could do anything to get him to shut up because he hasn't figured out how. I asked if I could pop him on the rump with a BB using only one pump. Finally the dog learned to shut up when the window of my house would open. If I left the window open the dog would not bark. If he did, all you had to do was go psssst like the sound of the BB gun and he would shut up. Must have been a smart dog because it only took a few pops on the butt for it to work.

That is a great idea! I found a fairly sizable one in Charlotte, NC (20 mins away) and emailed them. Fingers crossed.

I'll try the laser idea tonight. I wonder if i can aim a small mirror just right, so the light itself makes the light turn off. Now THAT would be great! Too bad they don't make sound mirrors. Reflect the dog barking back at them.. slightly amplified of course.

So far I like JB's solution best.. buy 120 acres and live in a tent if need be. Anything to get the neighbors out of sight and out of mind. Then they can have a barking dog, a Harley with straight pipes.. anything, and you can still be friendly with them, since their annoying habits won't be keeping you up at night.

They do, it's called a microphone and a big ol' PA system.....come to think of it, that's the most awesome solution to barking dogs yet!

Might want to go out and get a mirror ball, and hang it in the back yard, play some disco - to go with the new flashing light you just made... ;)

This would be a perfect application for active noise cancellation technology. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_cancellation
I'm not sure where to buy the pieces/parts to make this happen.

Distance is certainly one way to attenuate the noise/light/whatever down to where it is not a problem. I wouldn't think you'd need 120 acres - depending on how y'all are situated, even 5-10 would do, especially if there were trees on it.

Speaking of which: physical barriers are another way of attenuating noise - fences or hedges. A hard barrier - like a solid fence - would actually reflect a lot of the noise. Painted white, silver, or coated in tinfoil, it would reflect much of the light.

One evening, when the spotlight is on, invite that neighbor over for dinner in the back yard. When he is in your yard, and is wondering why he can't see a thing due to the bright light, you can calmly say, "Do you see my point?" No need in starting a mud tossing contest, some people take it to extremes. As far as the dogs, I would buy two barking collars, and give one to each owner. You can kindly ask, "I footed the bill, would you mind possibly putting these on your dog?"

I lived in a 4plex condo for a few months. Neighbor behind me used to play loud music at all hours of the night. One morning about 6 am I got up, turned the speakers around so they were face to the wall, and let him have Jerry Faulwell at full volume for about a half hour.

No more late night unwanted music.

Moved back to the farm as soon as I could.

Ya or buy some Barry Manilow(however you spell it) music and crank it up. Put a big sign out that says-- "I will cut this off when I don't see lights in my eyes and/or here dogs barking "

"OH MANDY YOU....." HAHA he makes me sick. Should work :D

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

My neighbor has a nasty little dog that for some reason hates me and will run to the fence which is near my garage and bark like it wants to attack. I finally put up a 6 foot wooden fence so the dog doesnt see me outside. Just for fun I got a duck call and 'trained" the dog to know I was outside by blowing it. Now when the neighbor calls the dog to come back inside I will blow the call and the dog then charges the fence paying no attention to the neighbor calling it. I stop and let the dog get half way back to the neighbors door then blow it again.. The dog then stops and charges the fence again. The neighbor finally has to go and drag the dog away from my fence to get it back inside,,,,,,,Funny stuff.
