I would reconsider the mirror approach. During the day, the sunlight redirected by your mirror could easily start a fire.

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

My neighbor has a nasty little dog that for some reason hates me and will run to the fence which is near my garage and bark like it wants to attack. I finally put up a 6 foot wooden fence so the dog doesnt see me outside. Just for fun I got a duck call and 'trained" the dog to know I was outside by blowing it. Now when the neighbor calls the dog to come back inside I will blow the call and the dog then charges the fence paying no attention to the neighbor calling it. I stop and let the dog get half way back to the neighbors door then blow it again.. The dog then stops and charges the fence again. The neighbor finally has to go and drag the dog away from my fence to get it back inside,,,,,,,Funny stuff.

Hmmmm .

How prepared are you to engage in a protracted war involving city officials , lawyers , vindicitive neighbors , the police , etc.. ?

Have you really attemted to get to know them , maybe invite them over for a barbeque ?

I make it a point to meet my neighbors and get to know them .
I may be something of an anachronism these days , but IME , taking the time to get to know your neighbors prevents a lot of potential problems .

In many cases , people just do not know any better , and tend to get thier backs up when they are addressed by a stranger . Resolving any issue is much easier when you have something in common and are a known quantity .

An escalating situation of reprisals , involving legal or quasi-legal actions is NOT something you want to engage in if you can absolutely avoid it .

IF you havn't tried being overtly friendly , give it a whirl .
You just might get some new friends . If it does not work , you at least tried to take the high road .

I have been in similar situations , and , there have been very few that were impossible for me to deal with in a civil matter . For these I arranged some innovative solutions , but , this board frowns on such things do I won't post any explicit examples .

Heres something to ponder, that high privacy fence is the problem.

I guess I am not as nice as some. I had a neighbor that had one of those quartz flood light that shown in my bedroom. same problem, they refused to move it. but since they were bar hoppers at night. I would let the light get hot (about 20 minutes) and then a splash with the garden hose and "poof" out goes the light. by the time they came home water dried up, no evidence. he finaly got tired of putting bulbs in it. no more light!

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

I have a train horn in my car. I also had a neighbor that had a loud *** dog (FOR MONTHS this dog has been barking, police have been there a few times etc etc). The DAY AFTER I installed the train horn the dog started barking again.......I mentally said, "5 mins and he's getting blasted"

10 mins later I walked out, let the psi in the tank hit about 150 and then just emptied the tank. The dog jumped at least 3 feet in the air and then fell to the ground in what looked like pure FRIGHT. He laid there for the next 5-10 mins while I waited for him to bark again.....didn't do it. Eventually he got up and walked back around the other side.

Have not heard him bark for more than a min or two since!! (a few neighbors have come and thanked me for doing that, because the whole block heard the horn)

Also - I had a spanish neighbor who had one of those rice mobiles. You know, fart can, purple/ blue/red/yellow paint and of course ONE OF THE MOST SENSITIVE ALARMS EVER. This ****ing alarm would wake me up MULTIPLE TIMES A NIGHT. I called the police on the guy and they said when they went out he pretended like nothing was happening.

He was either a cook/cleaner/ something like that, because he'd leave at 5pm and get home at 2/3am. So I figured his best sleeping time was around 7am/8am.

For a week straight after the train horn was put in I would just do a quick 1 second blast as I drove by. It was loud enough that it would set off his alarm, he'd have to go find his keys and turn it off.

That didn't work. The next week I had a day off........ I tried to think of what I could do to end this ****. Turns out I had a nice radio controlled truck from when i was a kid.

I sat outside INSIDE my bushes (you really couldn't see me) in my camouflage outfit with black/brown face and drove that RC truck into his tires OVER AND OVER again (he always parked on the street, another pet peeve of mine). On what must have been the 15th time he came out PISSED....(the second the door opened I zipped the truck back behind a fence on his side of the street.

He came outside fiddled with it a bit and sleepily went back inside. I hit it two more times and went back inside. took a shower and on the way to work laid on the horn again.

I have NEVER heard the alarm again and the car remains parked in the same spot.

I truly believe some people are just stupid aholes who need things to be 10 times worse for them before they understand what they are doing to people.

The train horn has worked WONDERS to show some people that they shouldn't be running red lights, or cutting off a Bronco with a boat trailer attached to it on the highway.

I suggest you buy one of those dog barking things for 40 bucks and then get one of these lights. For 25 bucks they are bright as hell!!

Trust me, I know that light is bright. That's the exact light he's using! I love the train horn idea. Maybe I'll give the guy and his dog a heart attack. He looks two fried chickens away from his next heart attack anyhow.

Before the advent of caller ID the idea that I liked the best was if little fido was barking in the middle of the night I would call up the owner and when they answered all you had to do was bark into the phone. Got the message across quite quickly. Always fun to hear the owner about 30 seconds later go out and take care of business. I hear there is a way that you can block your number on caller ID if its needed. ;)

Not by the mirror - unless it was some sort of focusing one. I was thinking of something a little less expensive - you could even just paint some wood with some of that silver 'metalic' paint and have enough reflection to work.

You could just use a hand held air horn. I'm thinking that you probably have one with your boat safety equipment.

Then, there's always:
"Well officer, I was cleaning my boat's emergency flare gun and it went off. I'm really sorry about the dog".

Re: Jerk neighbors - what to do?

Tonight I took a photo of what my neighbors' respective porch lights look like.

The one of the right is my 1/2 decent neighbor with their 60-75 watt porch light, on the left is my local ballfield.. err, other neighbor and his fixed-mount directional sun. For perspective, the two lights are the same distance from the camera and both properties end ~40 feet in front of the camera.

Maybe I should start hosting little league in my back yard... I'll consider any balls that break the neighbor's windows as a home run. :p

You might want to wander on over to www.minthill.com. There is a link to the town's code of ordinances. I tried to look at it, but its an offsite PDF and it was taking forever to load, even though I have cable internet. You might have better luck and you might find a thing or two that would help you "spank" your inconsiderate neighbors.

It looks like you just discovered a new star! Damn that thing is bright! You should send that picture to the astronomy people you contacted and get them all to just show up at the dudes door and question him about the star on the side of his house.

Before we moved in to this rental, and even since then, the neighbour kids around here have been causing trouble. They smashed one of the sheds in our backyard (not one of mine), tore apart our Lilac bushes and just generally run rampant. Fortunately we were able to get the cops out here and it scared some sense in to the kids and when the kids delinquent parents saw me (typical fat *** tattooed biker, 6'4" ~225lbs) they've been nothing but pleasant and seem to make sure their kids are where they should be... their own yard. Doesn't sound like you'd have much luck with that approach.

Wished I could provide any kind of advice other then throw a part for your local HA chapter and make sure your neighbours see. Good luck!

That light is pretty ridiculous. It's clearly aimed right at your property. I doubt they'd like it if you stood in your yard and aimed a spotlight at their house and yet what they're doing isn't too much different.

I am so glad I can't see any of my neighbors, even though I only have 4 acres, it's nice living in the woods.

Too bad I don't live closer to you. I would come over and put up one of my parking lot lights. 1000 watt metal halide would make their light look dim :D Then if that wouldn't do it, I've got a light bank from a ball field that would light up the whole block. Of course your electric bill might end up being more than the deficit :D
