I picked up a 5.5 hp as my first top to bottom restoration that I am doing all on my own.

I finally got the flywheel off (man that was a bear!!) changed the coils but I have a question about the points. In the tune up package I bought and in the OMC parts listing they show a small "felt" oiler pad but I can't make out where it goes by the illustration. The existing motor didn't have any and I am not sure where they go.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

the felt pad goes on the part that rubs on the points cam ( crankshaft), and dont over oil the felt pad!!

Thanks guys! Still not exactly sure where it goes - in the links KFA provided my old eyes can't seem to see it on the completed magneto plate. I will go down and stare at the engine some more. I guess I just use a very, very small drop of the oil from the capsule that came with the tune-up kit.

There is a small metal clip that holds the wick located under ONE of the coils. It's held down by the coil and one of the large screws that goes through the coil, through the magneto plate and into the ring that is under the magneto.

I would spend the time to get it on right myself. True it will run fine without it, but for only so long. Over time the cam will wear grooves, which will lead to erratic spark and poor idle. The wick is there for a reason. Just my 2 cents.

I guess I am pretty dense - Under only ONE of the coils? I thought this was to go near the points not the coil. I guess the question I need to know is what does this lubricate? I thought since there was two pads in the kit one needed to go somewhere on each point.......... Sorry guys I will get it right eventually.

Yes. ONE of the coils. It's a little metal clip held down by one coil. The wick fits into it and it is positioned so that the wick rubs the cam lobe thus lubricating it. The lubricated cam lobe in turn rubs against the points follower. It has nothing to do with the coil except that it is mounted under one of them. You really need to just look at your magneto to see what I mean. It's hard to say in words.

Maybe a picture will help. Red lines show the clip and the wick. Blue line shows were the clip goes.View attachment 152133

Under the chapter entitled, "Outboard Repair for the Hard of Thinking"

EUREKA!!!! Thank you OBG - that was just what I needed, now it makes senses. Thank you for taking the time to do a picture with arrows!!! I will check for the little clip in the kit.

I wonder why there were two pads in the kit? One to use and perhaps one to stem the blood flow from my nose when the wrench slips........... :D

Funny. A bloody AND greasy nose....I think they just pack one wick with every set of points but you only need one per motor. They don't include the wick clip with the new points set - You reuse the one you have. You'll find it when you remove the coils unless it wasn't put back the last time someone worked on your engine. One of my engines didn't have one. It still doesn't.

I am afraid you are right, I already removed the coils and there was nothing there - sheesh now I don't even get to try out my new found knowledge........ well I am sure I can find one somewhere - I will not be denied!

I found a picture showing the clip in position but it doesn't have the wick in it. Hope it helps.

That explains why it was hard to find it.
Sounds like ironhill has an iron will. It's not all THAT critical. It does keep the cam and the follower on the points from wearing (consider that it's going around 3 - 4000 times a minute) which changes the point gap over time but it's not overnight. I think if you have one, I'd put a wick in it but if it's missing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I don't know how much you'll use your engine but if it's like me, I dream about being out on the water way more than I actually get out on the water. If you'll use it 5 -10 times a summer it probably isn't too big a deal now, if you deliver the mail with it every day.... maybe I'd worry about it a bit more.

What a great way to put it - my wife just calls it being "pig-headed".

I have several small older outboards and each will not be used more than a handful of times a year max. So maybe I can let it go (maybe).............
