With all the traveling I did all over the US & Canada, I met great folks in each state(only missed 9), but I gotta say Oklahoma was the best of the best, couldnt even buy a meal or a beer! Unbelievably courteous, helpful, kind, polite, generous and great humor!
Just curious about you guys experiences!! :>)

I traveled a lot in uniform in the 50s. I was treated like visiting royalty everywhere in the USA, but nowhere better than in New Zealand and OZ. You would have thought that I had personally driven the Japanese from their door.

I am so glad that service personnel in uniform are once again getting the welcome, thanks and love that we did (and the Nam Vets didn't).

I have always found rural folk, and particularly in the south and southwest, friendly and welcoming.

I had similar experience when we visited Idaho in the early 90s. My brother, Dad and I spent 6 days and travelled from Idaho Falls to Boise and spent 3 days in Riggins inculding 2 guided fishing trips on the Salmon River. The folks were very friendly to us and loved our southern accents. Everyone would ask "where are you guys from?" when we spoke to them! Twice we had a stranger buy our breakfast or dinner, who would not accept a no thankyou! We enjoyed meeting and dining w our new friends and talking about our different areas. My brother and I went to a bar in Riggins, Population 500?+/- 2 nights , and could not buy a beer once we introduced ourselves to the locals and got our first one! We had a ball shooting pool, dancing, and drinking and getting to know the locals till the bar closed each night. I honestly thought of just staying and never going home. I joked to my brother to go home, tell my livein girlfriend, and sell all my stuff and mail me a check!!! the people and the scenic country, wildlife were very beautifull. I'm sure it's still a great State to visit or live in.

Having travelled through most every state..I have to say everywhere...everybody is typically nice.

wherever you go, there you are. What you bring and project is usually what is returned.

Went to Austin Texas last year when UCLA played Texas in football. Nicest people I have ever met.

I would agree on NZ, visited in the late 80's and found everyone to be incredibly friendly and eager to share their history. I don't know if that's changed since I'm sure tourism has increased dramatically since.

Lived in OK for half a year or so for work and did not find the folks to be particularly friendly.

I think the climate has something to do with it.....the more favorable the climate, the more favorable the people......but, there are exceptions to every rule!

For those that have not visited try the EXTREME northeast. I recently moved to Newfoundland. Some of the most hospitable people on the continent. Before i even got out of bed the first day the neighbor brought the coffee pot over from his maker for our coffee. When he found out I don't drink it he went back hoem and came back with milk and juice instead.

The first visit here I had friends arguing over where me and the GF would be eating. We literally had to tell them to stop and set our own schedule for meals. The last day they all threw a house party for us.

We also have a special welcome for visitors. It is called "Screeching In". It involves repeating a popular newfoundland phrase or a Newfoundland folk song, eating some traditional Newfoundland made bologna, kissing a codfish (on the mouth), or in very rare occasions a puffins "arse" and having a shot of Newfoundland Screech. All of this is done of course in front of as many people as possible, while consuming as copius quanities of alcohol and "having a stomp".

At Christams we have the mummers, but that is dying out. A few friends dress up in costumes to disguise themselves. Then they go off to their neighbors houses. The neighbor tries to guess who has just come in. The "mummers" don't speak to the owners. While visiting, the mummers drink and dance. If the owners guess, then the disguises have to come off, at least at that particular house.

I found South Carolina to be the most pleasant. Up here in the Tri-state area might be the least.

What I've observed is, people in the south are generally more polite. I mainly speak of Tennessee/Alabama where we've been frequently. Alot of yes sir, no sir. Sir? They just seem to be more respectful than northern folk. I've been northern folk all my life and am not saying everyone up here is disrespectful/not very polite by any means.. Maybe it's because it "appears" people in the south are more laid back... Or, maybe it's just "the grass looks greener on the otherside of the fence".......

I believe ANYWHERE in REAL rural or middle America, people are kinder, friendlyer, more considerate, less stressed or worried about lots of stuff than folks in the rat race of congested, highly populated areas. I know I would be, If I still lived there but my local area is not what it used to be.:(

I relate best to those kindly folk from the state of bliss, a little agitated with those from the state of confusion and avoid everyone from the state of anarchy. :D

St Maartin is my favorite island for people. I think the Guavaberry rum there gets everyone in a mellow mood. You weren't treated like a tourist, but like a friend. The island is divided into the French and the Dutch sides. The Dutch side has incredibly beautiful homes and buildings. The French side is better known for it's incredibly beautiful women. :D That being said, my favorite island is Saba, just a bit east. Nothing beats drinking a "Tropical" at the Tropical Bar and Grill watching the sunset. Just don't plan to walk anytime soon as the cliffs are pretty steep. :D Good memories.
