Re: Lets hear it!!! How do you keep your boat safe?

I kept mine in front of the house and the only thing I used was a hitch lock. I thik it would look weird for someone to be towing a boat in the middle of the night. Plus the driveway is right in front of my bedroom window.
Tommays,
If boat theft is keeping you from getting a new boat, then you need to move.

Hitch lock, and padlock through the transom handles on my 15 hp Mercury.

I had my 9.5 Evinrude chained to the transom with a padlock, but the durn theives just loosened the eye bolt on the motor that the chain was attached to and off they went with my old 'rude! My bad for making it so easy for them, but in reality, that old 'rude was in need of a tuneup as I discovered first hand what is means to get your boat up on PLANE! Hee Hee, almost scared me when it lifted up onto the water!

Stored when not in use behind 6' wood fence hidden from view. Normal padlocks, dogs in yard, alarm on boat, my window faces it as does a camera.

And I have insurance like others stated. If you want it THAT bad..you can have it, I will buy bigger!!

Full alarm system on all hatches, lockers and cabin door. Also have high bilge water switch wired to the system. An alarm loop of coax cable goes through the dinghy transom and the motor. The siren goes for 4 minutes and the strobe keeps flashing until I reset the system. My cell number is hanging in the dockside window, and I've had 2 calls from when people tried to get into my boat. So I feel it was $750 well spent.

Title implies what I mean. How do you keep your boat safe( from theft). Hitch lock, boat house. Lets hear it.

Like the others I use a hitch lock(my own) I took a ball, cut the bottom off smooth. then welded some 3/4 chain to it. now i just slip the ball into the hitch wrap 2 turns and padlock using a milspec high sec lock. That and directions to my house include turn off the paved road and go another mile. And the dogs that I keep in the fence with the boat. I feel real secure.

My new boat came with an outboard motor lock. Took me 20 mins to get the dang thing off WITH the key. It is also nice to know that the key does not fit the tongue lock of your new boat AFTER you locked it to the truck.

Very small community at my marina. Boat is at marina in dock and trailer at home during the season. My 2 sons took the boat out near the end of the season and were stopped 3 times while they were out on the lake by other local boaters seeing that I was not on board. Off season at the side of my garage with 2 loud but friendly dogs at home. They bark if anyone even puts a foot on the driveway. Good neighbours also as if I lose the boat then they don't get to go fishing !!!

Guns and locks do a good job and I'm sure most of us have them on hand. When at home, an all weather camera and a recorder give me a real good picture of anyone who approaches the area, yes even in the dark. :)

A long time ago, when I was very young, the fish were so big we had to fish from shore with a tow truck line.

I buy old boats and hang Johnnyrudes with amplified ignition and electric shift. Anyone dumb enough to steal it deserves what he gets. ;)

But to protect the trailer, I use a hitch lock. :)

Re: Lets hear it!!! How do you keep your boat safe?

I have to admit I do very little. I can look out the window at my dock, but that doesn't help at 2 in the morning. My dock is visible from the nearby bridge that crosses the inlet I live on. I used to remove the fishfinder head every time, but I don't even bother with that. The only thing that is secured is my kicker, I have as large a padlock as would fit through the holes on the transom clamps. When not in the water, I do remove the fishfinder head. Once I know I am done for the year, the boat goes in the garage until spring, but that is just to keep it out of the elements.

I am blessed to live in a nice neighborhood where everyone elses house and boat is nicer than mine, and I am the only home in the neighborhood that has lights on at night. Everyone else is darked out, and provides much tastier targets.

Plus, I live out of town. Most of the theft in my area is in town, targets of opportunity, by meth tweakers, and they target cars and houses. I see boats on every block, and none of them get messed with. Tweakers hate doing work, and stealing boat stuff often times means work, and there is nowhere to easily rid themselves of what they stole...

Live in Dubai!!

They'll cut your hand off if you steal even a chocolate bar!
I have insurance but here that does not normally cover theft as it doesn't happen......so I'm told.;)

The guy I bought it from always left it on the trailer on a public road near the local slipway. Couldn't believe it.
I have it on my drive at home.
So far so good.

I have a 1/4 mile driveway. About half way up, there's a sign that says:

"If you can read this, then you are in range"

A MUST READ FOR BOAT ANTI-THEFT SOLUTIONS.

For everyone else who is thinking about how to keep their boat more safe, here are a few easy and cheap solutions (maybe a little redneck too).

A few options:

1.)for winterizing, some put trailer on jack stands and removed tires/rims to keep in better condition over winter. It is difficult to steal a boat with no tires.

2.)my favorite, if your boat does not move during the winter, park it in its winter resting spot and simply remove all the lug nuts. If stolen, the trailer might make it out of the driveway, if they manage to make it farther, tires are sure to fall off at the first major intersection which will draw attention for sure!

3.)scuff the threads on a hitch ball, grease and shove the ball in the tongue and lock it down, if anything this will slow them down.

4.) booby traps are great! chain the trailer to an object, ie. fence, cinderblocks...Hide the chain so that theives cant easily find or notice, when they make their get-away they will be easy to spot when they are dragging a chain link fence or concrete block behind.

5.) another booby trap! get a steel road, much like your axle shaft, run it between two tires and into a slot of the rim, after one revolution the bar will be pinned against your leaf springs and will seize the rims from rotating.

These are just a few to consider. Remember pro's can get past any security device thats on the market, they specialize in it, so dont waste your money! they clearly are not intelligent enough to make an honest living, outsmarting them should not be difficult.

ALSO, DONT forget about your own security booby traps prior to spring, you might just fool yourself into some embarresment.

Hitch lock and insurance. The neighbors know my temper well so they stay away from it. I even keep both front and rear graph on it.
