Lincoln Mercury engines good or stay away? I believe its an '01-04 not sure of the year

Wasn't sure. they advertised the boat with a Lincoln Mercury?

I`d find another salesperson , they might be referring to Mercruiser 3.7 FWC motor. sometimes called a 470 or 488.Only thing car on it is the 460 truck head.

Obviously the seller hasn't got a clue about at. In 2001, the only 5.0L engine was a Chevy V8, probably a Mercruiser setup. Has nothing to do with Lincoln Mercury.

LOL! true! When looking is it better to look for a boat with a Volvo SX or Chevy with a mercruiser out drive? I guess I'm asking what is the best combination? What do i want to stay away from?

Obviously the seller hasn't got a clue about at. In 2001, the only 5.0L engine was a Chevy V8, probably a Mercruiser setup. Has nothing to do with Lincoln Mercury.

Is one set up better than the other? Which is a better choice, Mercruiser or Volvo?

Depending on year, model engine, type drive, size of boat, and on and on and on. There is no answer
Your biggest concern is if you buy a Volvo or a Mercruiser, is there anyone in your area that can fix them if you can't.
Either are good, but if you buy used, then you are dependent on what the previous owner did, age, type of use, etc.

Your question is right up there with which truck is better, Ford or Chevy

Both brands use the same base GM engines and have reliable outdrives. What matters most on a used setup is how it was taken care of.

Is one easier to work on than the other? Are shift cables an issue if the boat was only ran in freshwater? What about Jet drives ie...Yamaha boats?

I've read more about ppl switching from Merc to Volvo then the other way around. Both are VERY similar. Volvo supposedly a bit more user/mechanic friendly. Engines are almost the same if I'm not mistaken. Isn't Volvo using a Chevy block as well? Impeller change on Volvo is similar to Cobra, whereas on Merc gotta split the drive unit etc etc. Less ppl cursing Volvo... if you don't mind me putting it that way.
If they say Mercury it's probably Mercruiser. I know Florida air boats owners love Caddy engines... supposedly the only ones that can withstand the regime. But Lincoln...?

Any comparison has to start with what do you want in a boat, how big is it, how will you use it, all of that.

MerCruiser has basic configurations of drives named Alpha and Bravo. The alpha drives have the impeller in the lower unit, Bravos have the raw water pump up on the engine like Volvos. Volvos all have the same basic configuration regarding raw water pumps. Volvo and MerCruiser both offer DuoProp or dual prop models, in a Merc that is only avaiable on a Bravo.

The base Volvo drive is considered stouter than the Merc Alpha, but up to 300hp it will not matter. The base single prop VOlvo drive can be upgraded to DuoProp by changing out the lower. On a Merc if you have an Alpha you are locked into the single prop scenario.

See where I am going with this?

Yes, didn't know that about the impellers on the different drives!
Any opinion on Yamaha boats vs. propped boats?

I understand that. I just wanted to know the difference between the two drives, other than the obvious - one has a prop the other doesn't.

This is my new favorite all time ad! How stupid can people be? Let's start with the obvious:

1) They misspelled the manufacturer of the boat, when it's WRITTEN on the side of the boat, and they see it every time they get in the boat!
2) Mercruiser is also written on the outdrive and the engine, and they called it a Lincoln Mercury! Classic!
3) Excellent
4) How many boat covers does it have?

I would barely be able to contain myself if I went to look at this boat. The owner knows NOTHING about boats. I would definately want to see the actual maintenance records, cause I'll bet a nickel that stuff gets skipped. Then I'd inspect it very closely for signs of abuse and especially neglect.

(Bt Doctur, the 3.7 was out of production long before 2001, so no worries there. The owner is just Stupid and doesn't know what he has)

The differences are almost too great to list. I suggest looking at a picture of the two sytems and you'll see that other than being installed in boats, they have no similarities.
