My boat trailer has a Dico 60 hitch with a screw down type coupler. Are there any locks on the market for this type? All I see are the once for the latch down ones.

You are talking about a trailer coupler like U-Haul and different rental places use I think.
No, have never seen a lock for them but they may be out there though.

I would attempt to install something between the holes but the pull up bolt is in the middle. :(

i suggest using a pad lock on your safety chains. better than nothing.

Re: Lock for screw type coupler?

I seem to remember seeing a type of lock for those type couplers, it was sort of like a "C" clamp design that simply clamped down on top of the knob and reached underneath the coupler somehow. It didn't look too secure, just a little better than nothing. Like TD said, lock the safety chains, if not just carry a length of chain and lock the wheels, or the trailer to the hitch when you park.

My best two trailers have super duty safety chains welded to the tongue and I have an equally heavy pad lock that I lock them to the hitch with. Its not likely that anyone would be able to easily get though the chains, they'd probably have to cut the tongue or hitch off. (I also tack weld all the hitch hardware).

Did you call Dico and see what they say?

They said they do not have a method. Therefor they have discontinued the screw type Dico 60. He said the Dico 60 will still be available but only with a latch now. He said I would be able to update my unit, but would cost about 50-60 bucks for a new housing and the latch parts.

Re: Lock for screw type coupler?

Do you want to be able to lock it onto the ball or just when the trailer is not being towed?

What if you cross drilled a hole in the turning handle high enough to clear the center bolt. Then use a locking hitch pin so that it is too long to be able to unscrew without hitting the rest of the coupler?
Of course the handle is diecast (I think) and a hammer will easily break it into pieces.

i think it would be worth upgrading the part for $60 or so. at least you wouldnt have trouble getting any parts or another lock easily if you forgot/lost it.
