Low smoke outboard 2 stroke engine oil

I'm running a 1975 75 hp Evinrude Hustler on my boat. I think the oil mix is 50:1 but I usually run it thicker at 25:1 or somewhere between that and 50:1. I generally use the typical Canadian Tire brand TCW3 outboard stuff. It puts out a lot of smoke. What I'm wondering is if there is any oil that would be just as good or better and not put out as much smoke when running.

I hear synthetic oils produce less smoke, but I can't say for certain having never using any...yet! The reason you are experiencing so much smoke is because you are not mixing to the ratio the engine requires. If your engine calls for 50:1 mixture, then use that ratio and a lot of your smoking issues will disappear... And with modern 2 cycle oil blends these days, your engine will be better protected then even a decade ago. So the choice is yours.

get a jug of omc/bombardier oil from your dealer, its more expensive than CT oil, but cheaper than synthetics, and as mentioned mix at 50:1. ( with you mixing at 25:1, the price will probably equal out as you will be using half the oil at 50:1) jmo

I think the 25:1 mix may gum up your rings

I used to own that very motor and successfully ran it for about 800 hours at 50:1.

Lots of people on here swear by Pennzoil synthetic. I found it to be inferior.

Evinrude XD-50 smokes very little and the cost is competitive.

25:1 is for racing full throttle as if you were stealling that boat/engine combo running for hours, 50:1 is your best fuel/oil mix with half the smoke.

I'm likely mixing at more like 35:1 than 25:1 but it was recommended to me to keep it well lubricated. Thanks for the tips so far.

The owner's manual should be the only source for operating specifications. Anyone that recommends different is giving bad advice, even if it came from the internet, where everything is always correct.

A few years after your motor was built they went to oil injection, with basically the same engine. That gave a variable ratio, with as high as 100:1.

So far 1 vote for Pennzoil one against, 1 for Evinrude XD50 and one for Bombardier (may be the same as the XD50)

I use the wamart 2 stroke, but I like the smell of 2 stroke smoke:noidea:

As said, running at 25:1 or even 35:1 may harm your engine in the long term. Stick to 50:1 with dino oil (there's already a margin for error included in the mfg spec.) and see if it improve the smoking. If not, switch to semi-synthetic (like the BRP XD-50) or full synthetic.

If your criterial is cheep, then the Pennzoil is for you. MY criteria was based on the OP's question. I said it was inferior because for me it smokes just as bad as the realcheep Wally stuff.

No, I'm not worried about price. I want a good quality oil that does not smoke as badly. If I have to pay more I'm ok with that for superior protection and less smoke.

but it was designed for direct injected engines and not to be mixed with fuel. nevertheless it should work here very good

@ op : go synthetic and lean your mixture ratio. remember that when your engine was build there were no oils like today so you will have even with lower oil mixture ratio superb lubrication and only little smoke.

get shell nautilus also sold at ctc. runs pretty clean and hardly any carbon buildup.

The specs recommend use in direct injection or any 2-cycle that call for TCW3.

I would decarb the motor and run synthetic at 50:1. I worry you'll hang a ring on an exhaust port from carbon build up sticking a ring at that high an oil ratio. I don't know if there's anything to it, but I hear increasing oil that much can actually lean out the fuel mixture. You can have too much of a good thing!

I suppose it might depend what motor you have .I use pennzoil semi synth in my motor and have zero smoke atall.zero zip nada period.if I believed it was no good I certainly would not use it in my 2011 60 etec.each to their own opion .that's what makes the world go around and keeps oil threads alive for ever,lol.

50:1 smokes bad enough
35:1 is crazy.

A few years back, in the 80's, major manufacturers were trying to 100:1.
It worked.
Only issue was for corrosion protection during long term storage or in saltwater areas.

You should be able to easily run 80:1 in freshwater.
just run 40:1 for the last tank before winter storage. Or do the proper winterization fogging like you are supposed to do.



xd50 will smoke a bit less.

My experience is that most synthetics smoke less, but the odor/fumes are not always pleasant.
