Put a bevel on the cut outs for the ribs

Cut out the floor well hole for the cuddy entrance

The rear deck piece was basically a match to the center one no pics needed
Cut out the cuddy floor

Porta potty cubby floor

I wasn't even using the fancy saw, other table saw is power in and out and does angles on rip, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ our carpenters got some fancy tools!!! Too fancy for a guy with 15 years of rough framer experience, (in another life)

Hi,
You have a very nice restore going there!! Congrats!
I have a question for you....at the start of your thread you mentioned you were happy that there were the supports already there for the chines on the boat. What do you mean by that? I have a 1968 22ft Starcraft Chieftan that I will be restoring....the local starcraft dealer here tells me to get the floor out and then they sell a template of some sort that fixes " rib end cracks" that were common on those boats from way back. I guess sometimes they were fixed by PO's under factory warranty years ago. Anyway, could you please tell me....is this the same thing you are talking about???

and possibly this

and i also had this which the newer style is not exposed chine there is a plate stiffening this chine

If you look next to the screw gun you will see a plate covering the chine, that runs all the way forward that is the update I was talking about

Well no progress today, friends son wanted me to take him and his bride out fishing for there 5th wedding aniversry , so away we went! Great day on the water, so so fishing, still beats working LOL Enjoy Memorial Day and never forget our Sons and Daughters over seas, the ones who return or the ones who don't!!!!

Thanks so much for posting those pictures, I have been wondering what all of this looks like. Regarding the plate that covers up the chine, it looks like on the photo that the plate is welded.....if you look over the number "23" of the photo date, it looks like a small weld, I am guessing the plate is welded intermittently along the whole chine and is it welded to the edge of each rib as well??
When I get my floor out I will looking very closely at this area for any damage, thanks again for those pictures!!!

Hey MD - A quick question about the old, late, lamented Islander. What was the price per pound you got for the tin? You had the cleanest stuff you can scrap and in nice bite-size pieces. I kinda get tired of the CL ads that have the "worth more as scrap" line in them. I think most of them are full of bees wax. Thanks

Ya they are full of POOO, I had it set up the best you could have it, when I took ol 69 in they were paying .69 cents a pound for 5052, I got .52 a pound, If it is not stamped on every piece 5052, like only a new sheet will be, you get random sheet price. Lesson learned, got 200 back from hull. Figure uncut no wood hull to be worth .50 a pound at best, if they take it in with boat basically intact, perhaps 150$, problem is when po gets there what else are they going to do? Scrap it, the craigs list ads saying I can get more for scrap are a joke!!! Convincing them different is another story!!!!

Alright, it has been a long week and a half!!! Memorial Day I had a issue with the trailer under my Aerocraft, bout a mile from the launch I noticed smoke from the drvers side wheel bearing, OH SH@##, 5 miles home or 1 mile to launch and go fish, no brainer fishing we went!!! Now the bonus of ol 69 was I had spare trailer, too bad I tore that trailer down to rebuild it because that is the one I am going to use for 76, had to go kick 76 off it's caulkins roller trailer and use it for the aerocraft prematurely. So 76 is on my wood dolly I built for 69 a little early!! OH well. Left for Kentucky on Tuesday for work, put on 1900 miles last week, serviced 30 pieces of equipment on 6 different job sites and got home Saturday night. Needless to say was whipped Sunday, back at it today, we have progress on the Islander tonight!!!
Started with a dirty hull, lots of rivet left overs that needed drilling out and two "Stringer" supports that needed the wood taken out!!! Here we go
pre drilled a hole in the Stringer meat

Screwed in a custom eye bolt I made

Out comes the last of the wood

once again

Was prepared to brute force it, drilled all rivets out and they came out mint!!!

I thought that was the case with scrap values. No scrap yard is going to pay aluminum prices for wood or seats or plastic. The only way to get the best price is clean tin like you had and still nothing to write home about. At least you got some some Gluvit or paint money out of her.

On to the '76. She must be wood free with those two stringers cleaned out now. The pics of you pulling the wood look like you're in a ballroom. That baby is BIG.

EDIT - You were still posting as I was writing that stuff. ^^^^ That Aluminum Eater does a number on crud. You can eat off the hull.

Nothing fancy to show tonight, just more cleaning, got the limber holes cleaned out, flows water mint!!! Amazing how many screws, rivets, washers, and mouse nests can be in one hull!!!!!!! Got her pretty good, just time consuming and boring.
Now check out the swiss cheese that my transom is

Pic still doesn't do it justice, lots of little holes too.
So what do you all think, I have a 4'x8' piece of 1/8" 5052 aluminum that I originally was going to fab up a battery tray down the center of the boat with. Ala Jas style I have had a change of heart on the batts, they will be under the driver and passenger feet against the bulkhead wall, so I think I am going to cover the transom. What do you think the best bet is, weld it in and fill as many of the holes as possible from the inside with weld to tie the two sheets together or could I bolt and rivet the two together with a layer of coat it between them????? or skim coat between them of 5200? I am worried that it will warp significantly welding it. Ideas please Thanks

MD - Did you happen to keep the transom skin from the '69? I thought that was one of the pieces you were planning on keeping.

If you did how about sliding it behind the existing skin and lining up as many of the correct holes as possible which would have through bolts anyway. I think 5200 would be best to laminate the two skins. Then tack weld all the extra holes. So the bolts would hold it in place since the wood transom will clamp it and the tack welds give the water tightness and stop any slipping around. The extra thickness shouldn't interfere with getting the wood back in. And tacking should minimize warping. Just thinking out loud MD.

What is that big wazoo in the upper right of the OMC cut out? I don't remember seeing a non-symmetrical cut out like that.
