Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

come magnum, you are a smart guy....whip up a thin plywood box the same shape as each wedge in between your ribs and mix you solo cup and pour it in your test box.....see if it is enough or is it starts to split your box apart......I bet with just two of those "test" boxes you could nail down about what you need, plus you will have some learning curve for delivery under your belt bob

Ya smart maybe, notoriously cheap definitely. Kinda planned on the pod being the test subject

You make it sound like fun!! LOL How far did you space your pour holes? Every other rib OR ???????
And quantity wise I was planning on a SOLO cup full a pour, I just have no idea what that will yield. You pour yours in measured ounces??

I started with holes about 2 feet apart, but ended up adding some because the foam would come up to the pour hole, but not fill the entire cavity, so I had to drill more holes where the voids were. I started at the front and worked back, floor section by floor section. For example, I put the first section down, foamed, put the next section down, foamed, repeat, repeat. I could always see good by sticking my head down between the ribs and looking forward. Like I said, it started being fun when I used a dam held by me, then mixing up more than enough, and letting it push the dam. It needs some resistance in order to "back-fill". Since you have your entire deck down and its dammed up, i'd prolly error on drilling more holes than you need in your deck, (gasp, I know), than needed just to be safe. Then you might mix bigger batches and not have to worry much about blowing your deck off.....

Like Bob said, it'll take a little experimenting to get the feel. Temperature and a good mix make quite a difference in how much it expands. So consider that also...

I used plastic paint cups, 16oz I think, so 32 oz batches. The ones like True Value sells....

Mix good, and be fast with it. Especially if it's hot out. It's really thin, almost like water, when mixed before it kicks.

I just remembered you said you were going to tip the boat up with a hi-low? That should help a lot in filling from one end to the other. Mine was flat when I did it.

Off we went, Foamalicous, Pour

And Measure and stir

and pour, HURRY UP!!!!!!

Figured out that today at 70 degrees, 14 oz of mixed foam covered from edge of boat to stringer between two ribs nicely, verified coverage and expansion with some viewing holes and a handy dandy snake camera i have. so ended up drilling a hole between every rib at the edge, once the foam worked its way to the hole we placed the plug from hole sawing back in and put a piece of steel on it for weight. turned out ok, got some cleaning to do tomorrow. got both sides of deck foamed still got to do the center compartment.

Dams all held up nicely, worked out pretty good! Little cleaning to do but not bad.

Center drainage is poured foam free!!

Will pour more tomorrow, fill the center cavity we built for it, and start on the float pod. Going to struggle getting enough foam in here to really float it in an emergency, going to have to figure out how to get foam back in the bow where there was a block of it originally. frame something up around SWMBO'S porta potty and fill that area with foam, sides below the aluminum rail to. Going to be a challenge to get enough in but sure am going to give it a run.
side note, cyclo break clean gets rid of the foam pretty good, cleaned bench and tools with it and it basically just evaporated.
Good night of work!

Good job on the foam, it didn't look like it was to messy at all.

Helpers made all the difference for sure, if i had to have everything in the boat and work around it all it would take a lot longer and invite disaster spills. Thanks for stopping in guys!

Ok, well, it's been almost a day. I'm thinking that pour in foam should be totally waterlogged and roughly @ 500 extra lbs. Time to rip it all out and start over:facepalm:

(Kidding dood, just kidding. You have at least a week before you need to do that:becky:)

Went and got some measurements off of the cap, Installed my bulkhead walls, kinda planned on them being in there temporary, got the feeling they are permanent now.

Also used my concrete forming skills, with plastic for easy removal

Started pouring some mud

Had a couple blow outs

Remove forms and clean up, not to bad

Few voids at the top, still work i think

Little more progress, and possibly a set back, full disclosure on that later!

13 Degrees If I remember correctly
CONFIRMED
13 degree transom angle, trim the top for the deck skin to lay flat

Hey MD - Your foam looks like a.....er.....really bad agitation job on a basement wall pour. But a good job for a vertical foam pour. Innovative! :)

Hope the setback is minor.

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Ok, I will get the bad over with, couple problems with the foam. All along as part of my thinking and figuring this project out I have been rat holing supplies, I bought my foam in october, nothing on the website that I saw mentioned shelf life. I figured there was some kind of shelf life but here's the rub, 6 months is max on storing foam. I am outside of that, my yield is horrible, if I have the math right we will maybe yield 15 cu foot out of a 40 cu. ft batch, I spoke with a engineer at US composites and verified I was doing it right and then we got to shelf life OOOPS gonna pay for that mistake, the instructions they ship with the product state it, too bad you have it at that point. So screwed I am. Oh well live and learn.

Next screw up on my part is i have lost my positive limber hole drainage in several spots, apparently there were some ribs that were still open after pouring the outside floor sections, I thought i had em all plugged with excess foam. So when I poured the side walls i ended up with this

So I think I will order enough foam to fill the bilge, except at the back and come up with a way to seal it at the stern where my bilge sump will be, only bonus of this is it was going to be hard to get enough foam to really keep this crate fully afloat while swamped with out filling every void. I will fill it and treat it like the Lund video, and control my rain and playing water on the topside and make sure it gets to the back and not to the foam. Live and learn! Next post be lot better news!
Oh ya, maybe filling the boat full of foam I will take WOG up on the pull the plug challenge:rolleyes::facepalm::devilish:
