My first suggestion would be for you to purchase one of these manuals

I wouldn't buy one for that Stringer Drive though. I am certain that the guys can talk you through getting that leg off. It's really super easy. Literally took me a few minutes. (sorry, I wish I could remember the steps)

Getting the rest of the engine out is really straight forward.

I think you'd use that Stinger manual for 30 seconds then it would sit on the shelf. Don't bother.

Now, whatever Merc you go with certainly!

PM, it really is not hard at all to remove it, carefully, without the manual, but i do have one if you need it. got it with the boat many many moons ago.....

i personally like a combo for the seating, my plan is to build a sunpad with hinges/shocks to hold it up with the front removable so i have plenty of room to work on it if needed, also will give me access to the gas tank on the port side of the engine. stbd will probably be a cut out for a cooler to slide in and out of with the battery behind it. originally the boat came with jump seats in the back, one was a built in cooler wrapped with insulation and the other just storage. along the port side i will probably put in a long bench from an old pontoon boat that has plastic (no rotting base) base, and a captains chair for the helm or might go with a back to back for the helm to help offset the weight.

just dont let anyone post comments on your youtube page as most of them are on there for flaming anyway, and we are here to raise you up, help spend your money and provide some wild ideas to make you think about and then do something like add a tuna tower to it, make it a 2 story then extend it as well.

Just watched your first video, the funny thing is you put in at the lake right around the corner from my house, literally a 5 minute drive.

Okay, I said I was taking a break (and I am), but had to sneak on here for a few minutes and check in with my peeps... By the way Hydra (Road Kill), I really appreciate you taking the time to document the removal process. I know that probably took some time.

I know I am getting ahead of myself on the rebuild aspects.... Got a lot of hard work ahead of me... You guys keep chiming in, and I'll keep working, and keep the video rolling. Just picked up my pvc pipe to take core samples of the foam tonight....

though it is a ways off, dont rule out a U or L shaped configuration for your interior look at some of the newer wake or ski boats and how they are configured it is very nice and uses the space you have to a maximum. Either of those will provide the ability to use a post table if wanted for lunch on the lake, since you are redoing the deck anyway... Just another option to think about. If you are for sure selling the engine and drive I would start advertising right away, never know someone that really wants it may be willing to come to you and help with the disassembly and removal maybe not but you never know till you try.

I would go with a sundeck and a bench or U or L shaped seat in the back. Captains chairs in the front.

Yeah, we're yo peeps, and we be here when you get back. I figure you go'na get caught sneakin' in here to see what's going on and your wife is go'na sit you down for a talk :D Then you won't get to come out and play with the guys, next you'll be grounded, then we'll get labeled "a bad influence". On that end, I'll admit I'm curious about your boat being kept off-site and how this wrinkle will play out.
Glad to help if I did on disassemble. You don't seem the type to shy from putting a wrench to a motor.

Boatnut has a really good point. If this was the outdrive that I had on my boat, (and you were alittle close to me) I would give you an offer on it, and be over with tools in tow. I really wish that it was the outdrive that I needed. --Knock on Wood-- I dont need anything just yet, minus a trim problem needing to be solved, but I would love to be able to remove and learn and have a spare outdrive.

And I kind of like the idea about the U or L shaped seat. But like I said before, I would stick with the stock look. Maybe thats because my boat will never again be made, and I want to keep it a classic!

Wow, that's scary, or freaky, or something with a "y" on the end. You think that might just be a cranky ol' motor :D

This would be the way to go...I have that configuration and it is a great option on a boat. I have the built in the hull style swim platform off the back of the sundeck too but am thinking down the road to add the swim plalform off the back end of her.

Cheers

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 1).

Well....Trailered the boat to its new temporary housing today.... (sort of miss it).... Held my breath the whole way, as I had the dry-rotted "maypops" on the trailer (returned my newer loaner tires).... We made it.... The good news: The loner shop space is going to be great.... It's a tool lover's paradise... So, now I just need to learn to use all of them.

The bad news: took some core samples of the foam with 1.5" inch pvc like oops suggested... First few inches came out dry....:) Bottom inch or so = so wet I could ring it out...

Will do some drilling into the stringers tomorrow - but I'm guessing the wet foam is not a good omen....

Big work day planned tomorrow. Lil bat man and I are going to head out to the shop tomorrow a.m. bright and early. Goal is to remove the outdrive, lift the engine and maybe build some frames for the boat, since it looks like I am in for a new stringer/foam job and was advised (earlier today) not to do it on the roller trailer.....

Hopefully, I'll make some good progress and will post pics/video either tomorrow afternoon or Sunday. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Wish me luck...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 1).

not sure how much that will help you though. quite honestly there really is not much to remove the outdrive.
* remove the 1/4 gear on the port side
* remove the pivot cap bolts and pivot caps and make sure you have something attached to it so it does not fall on you
* pull backwards and out she pops

for the engine and intermediate housing leave it attached to the engine,
* remove the large hose clamp
* remove the screws from the rubber boot and metal plate
* remove the rubber boot and metal plate
* remove the 4 bolts for the engine mounts, 2 per side 1 forward one aft
* raise engine until clear of motor mounts
* pull towards bow until the intermediate housing is clear of the transom opening
* raise the engine until it clears the stern of the boat and pull away from the boat.

Easy as pie and should take no more than 10 minutes.........;) ok, maybe an hour, realistically, as long as you have everything setup and are ready.

give me a buzz if you get stuck.

I figured you'd need to take some of those kids with ya on the boat building outings. I have two girls myself. I find this and Disney movie and snacks for them to be invaluable for getting some work done. I'm not sayin . . . I'm just sayin. :)

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 1).

Hey Guys:
Quick Update. Had a little work session last weekend.

1. Got the swim platform and the white prosthetic leg (stringer) off the back of the boat. You guys were right... It was really easy....
2. Disconnected most of the electrical and cabling from the engine and got the main engine bolts off. The power steering cable connects to the very back of the engine (really where transmission connects to the intermediate housing) inside the transom, so I think I am going to have to slide the engine forward a bit before I can have decent access to disconnect that. Hopefully, the blue bomber will learn to fly this week at some point. We are lifting it out with a tractor (good ol mississippi redneck style - should be a good video post when we get to that).
3. Got the "bracket loops" and main bolts off the gas drum - its still connected to the vent and the fuel line, the fuel sender, etc... Damn thing is heavy.... Definitely going to have to drain the gas before I can budge it.

Thanks again for all the help and support. Quick video of the work session below:

The steering cable on my Stringer Drive frustrated me right away. I am certain there is a logical, reasonable, systematic method to removing it. Me? I got out the bolt cutters and was done with it in a jif;):D

Intermediate housing can stay on, just slide the whole engine forward (or boat back) and lift er out. There may be a little wrestling involved but you can pull it off:)

I know you're all done now but for next time you need to be in the boat holding the nut as well as outside the boat turning the bolt you may can clamp on to the nut with a Vise-Grip pliers and just leave it hanging. This works to keep the nut from turning on ya a good bit of the time.
You sounded dog tired in the video, my man. I hope you won't spare us any descriptors of the variations to your emotional state.

There is; Found it in the manual and also on another thread.

I am good; I was just talking a little more quietly, because there was some people I do not know at the shop and, quite frankly, its a little embarrassing talking to yourself in a camera.... Haven't even gotten to demo and grinding yet... still got plenty in the tank (for now).

Thanks guys,
