Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 4).

Okay:
Quick update from this weekend's work session. To try and avoid being long-winded, I will just add some descriptions to the pictures:

Boat lift attached:

Tractor getting ready to lift the blue bomber in flight:

Giant Hole in my transom (big enough for me, 6'3", 215 to crawl through comfortably; what were they thinking?)
Gian HOle.jpg

Boat Cradle (spring loaded with hinge).
Boat Cradle.jpg

Robert (aka "Lil Bat Man") pooped after a hard day's work (and no I did not let my child sleep on the floor).

Only trick I learned today: Removing the OMC steering cable/assembly (if you want to keep it one piece for re-install, re-sale) is not that hard. I wish I had a picture of it, but you basically just unscrew one bolt from the bracket that mounts it to the transmission housing. Then, it will be free to rotate up and down around the bolt that slides through the housing (sort of like an axle). Rotate it "down" so you can see a little better and have more room to work with...then, rotate/turn steering wheel at helm until a little screw can be seen; Undo that screw; slide the bolt back out of the housing and off it comes... (pointless information for most of you who "know better"... but might help some poor soul like me in the future.

Video update is below.

I love it so far. Keep chipping away and before you know it, you will have a completed boat.

Personally I'd like to get a better look at that dedicated "cold beer" refrigerator. Now I'm sure I need one of those. Gona pop that cap this weekend? Godspeed to ya.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Quick Update:
1. Got additional boat cradle built.
2. Removed the gas line.
3. Removed the complete steering assembly and controls.
4. Finished removing electrical.
5. Removed all deck pieces.
6. Began process of digging out the foam.

Video is below. Let me know your thoughts, particularly on the foam. Next weekend I am heading out of town (going to watch the Florida/LSU game in baton rouge), so it may be a couple of weeks before I post the next update.

Thanks for watching and helping!!

Hey PM,
looks like you are making some good progress. I guess i was lucky (?) i think, in that the foam that was in mine had disintegrated and was all removed for me. Now that is some serious rot and breakdown.

Keep plugging away and before you know it you will be into the best part that everyone loves, the grinding........ oh joy, how i miss that part and look forward to doing some more here soon....ahhhhh......;)

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

that boat does not look to bad at all patrick.

i think you will have a really easy tear down.

on the last segment of the vid......we can see why it is rotten.....the tabbing was all that was there.....

when you encapsulate the wood in fibreglass.....this is where the real rot protection comes form....even one layer csm.....will give you another 5 years.

the main section of the stringers dont look that bad at all patrick.....i would suggest just replacing the bad parts....but that idea is premature.

as far as the foam....i keep the big chunks and throw them in with the new foam....it cuts down on the materials.

This thread is worth reading for the wording alone. lol. Very creative story!!! Excellent job on the videos and work. It'll help motivate me to check the "inners" of my boat.

Thanks junkman, It may not be informative, but I am trying to at least make it entertaining. One thing I left out of the "funny story" was my trip home from Atlanta towing the boat behind the suburban with 4 kids in the car, with no spare, white knuckled (with AAA card firmly in hand) driving through 8 lane traffic in Atlanta metro through sheets of rain from Tropical Storm Lee. It rained (hard) the entire 8 hour drive home. We stopped in Alabama to eat and I checked the rear plug to make sure everything was draining out (I at least had the foresight to remove that). Well, the drain had gotten clogged from a bunch of the junk (leaves, dirt, etc...) in the bilge. So, being the brilliant person that I am, I knelt down about eye level and stuck my pinky in the drain hole to loosen up the debris. Nasty bildge water shoots out like a fire hose right into my face and all over my clothes..... Brilliant....

100% successfull,
I have been away from iboats for a while but I'm glad to be back for this one. This has been some of the best reading I have had in a long time.
Keep the dock lights.
I have bought two donor boats over the last two years, (or was it three) anyways I didn't pay more then $500 for any of them including the trailer.
great project and attitude.
Have Fun
Bob

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Looks like your making lot's of progress . I am at the point to flip the hull and trying to make a few decisions before I go any farther. At the point now to decide on how I want to finish it. Actually taking a break because the boat will not hit the water until next season. I already jumped the gun on how I was going to re-doe the exterior . I am now going to re-gel. That is ok since I am going to be putting carpet back into it I figure I might as well use the epoxy on the deck itself as that will be the part that sits saturated and I will feel better about the waterproofing. I know you are not there yet, but at the rate you are going you will not be long before you are putting it back together. I like your attitude and ambition .

Cheers
Jack

Okay: Taking a big, comedic risk here that some of you might find this remotely funny:
