Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

how is the new boat patrick?

Haven't picked it up yet.... I've made the seller "pinky swear" (over the phone at least) that it's mine. Its two hours away in Louisiana.

Any special tips, tricks (or threads for reference) on inspecting an engine to make sure it's not a lemon.

Obviously, I am going to put it on muffs and crank it, but want to make sure I do my diligence.

Thanks,
rpm

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Well if it were me I would check the oil first have a look at it make sure there is no water in it. I would then start it up and watch the oil pressure, make sure it is good and strong. Make sure you bring the boat up to temperature. I would run it for a bit after it comes to temp, biggest thing is you want to check the oil pressures at idle especially after it has been running for some time and it is well warmed up. If the pressure drops too low it usually means to much clearance in the crank bearings . That being said it has seen better days and is ready for an overhaul if the pressure goes to low. There can be other reasons for this scenario but it is a gamble that I will not take . Others will chime in but without doing compression checks etc, there is not alot to see but a good ear can help you too.

Good luck

Thanks OJ.
So, first step is to check the oil pressure (that will be funnier once you watch the video below).

Thinking about how utterly clueless I am reminded me of this scene from spies like us (especially Dan Akroyd checking the lantern for anesthetic).

If you think about it, there really are a lot of parrallels you can draw:

I can just see myself standing in this guy's boat and saying: "You want to check the compression; you get up here and check the compression")

Or... isn't that a little high for the X-dimension?

And, instead of "this man is dead" - it may be something like, "this engine is blown"

At this point it's probably too late to get all particular about engine performance testing or checking for this that and the other thing. Just use you ears and eyes. Don't ignore what they tell you. Don't decide you want the first engine you drive all that way to check out to be the right one. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't so just be Mr. Spock about it and be completely unemotional. Just try to relax and remember we are behind you 100% and that we will be sitting back all comfortably poised to rib you insatiably or patronize you for any errors in judgment. Well . . . because we are your peeps and that's our job. :)

yes......there is patrick......i have followed this advice every time i have bought an engine, and never gone wrong......

if there is a big hole in the side of the block with a piston lookin thingy hangin out the side............dont buy it ! :D:D

another trick is to take a stick of wood ....kinda like a broom handle......and rest it on the motor.....stick your ear to the end of the broom handle....the wood act like a stethoscope.......you hear everything !..on the valve covers......on the block near the crank.....on the timing cover (if you can get near it.......if you hear a sharp rapping sound,,,,i mean bad,,,,run) you will hear a ticking from the valve covers....a kinda grinding from the lower end.....as well as from the timing cover) the rockers can tick a little......the lower end can grind.....(you are actually hearing the crank go round.......and the timing chain will sound like a bicycle chain at super high speed. any sharp knocks..or banging from the inside....and no thanks !

the advice on top of this post by outback and hydra sport is good....follow it.

you are a sharp enough guy.....you know never to buy a starcraft that isnt made of metal.....you dont want to be duped by any one ! :D;)

you will do fine bud....!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

sorry....i forgot the simple things......

on the exhaust manifolds.......look for a line of rust across the middle running length wise......or possibly jb weld.
look on the block as well.......any rust drips coming from nowhere......or a rust straight line.....and walk......this is the sign of a previously frozen block.

if you are un sure.....you know where to find me.....if you are in doubt.....walk !
let me know when you are going so i can be on stand by

That is the thing oops and hydrasport give you some good pointers. They are all things I do and never mentioned ;) take it for granted and just do it . You can usually hear what you need with a trained ear . I bring the stick or prybar out sometimes when I feel I need it to listen. There are different ranges you can run the engine and listen when it comes back to idle for any bearing noise that you will not hear at idle. I have re-built alot of motors and stuff that comes natural you forget you do. I am actually doing one for a 66 chevy C10 right now. I have to say that after watching the video that it is funny and more to the truth when doing something you never did before. I would take someone with you that knows what to look for and listen for .

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Hey Guys:

Thanks for checking in... Well, we got a little sidetracked this weekend, but it was a good thing. We got invited to go camping this weekend, with 5 other friends and all of their boys... Quite the adventure.... 8 boys between the ages of 5 to 8. We camped at an old abandoned ghost town about hour from where we live... really cool place. So, the donor boat had to wait.... I hated to let another weekend go by without picking it up, but "first things first" and some good memories were made....

I am going to call the guy tomorrow, just to make sure we are still good.

I did sneak out this afternoon to do a little work, but I am in the midst of the "very uneventful" stage. I am basically just grinding down the hull to fresh glass and removing the remnant rubber/glue residue from where the carpet was removed on the gunnels. I used a packet of these spyder sawzall attachments and I must saw they work wonderfully to remove the crud.

Grinding....Grinding....grinding... you guys know the drill. I am officially in the middle of the "it has to get worse before it gets better" stage.

I'll post some pics of the donor as soon as I get it. Also, I am about to start ordering all of my materials (ply, glass, resin, etc...) and I am sure I will need some pointers.

Thanks again for checking in on me.

All the best,

rpm

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 7).

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 7).

Even though I did not touch the boat this weekend, I made a lot of progress.

First and foremost... We've got power!!!! I picked up my donor boat this afternoon. Yes,it has a starcraft logo, and no I did not do that on purpose. Fate is just funny that way...
5Y15V35Z03ka3o13l6ba48192cf8ec6831f87.jpg5O55W05P13n23kb3leba4dc458fb6ca35111e.jpg

The oil checked out nicely... The block looked good; the gauges in the boat were working and the oil pressure and temp checked out nicely. I listened intently with a broom stick, screwdriver, etc...and didn't hear any raps or rattles. In fact, the guy voluntarily wrote in on the bill of sale that the transaction would voided if I was not satisfied with compression check...(which will happen tomorrow).

The outdrive looks really good, and has a stainless steel prop. We engaged the prop in both forward and reverse and that looked good too.

I toyed with the idea of "which boat to restore" since this new one obviously has the better drive line already in there. However, after seeing the two boats, the choice was obvious. The starcraft has a crushed windshield and big chunk of jerry-rigged gel coat repair gone bad.....the interior is garbage. Its amazing that the interior and hull of my 1975 boat were in MUCH better condition than this one. Plus, I just have the sentimental attachment to the Chris Craft...

I also bought several sheets of exterior grade A-C (fir) ply to start on my transom and stringers (if I can get through with the dreaded grinding) and I ordered the bulk of fiberglass materials on Friday (rrumba, thanks for lead... best pricing, quick order, etc...).

I did all of this and managed to squeeze in a cub-scout camp-out, a halloween party yesterday, a wedding last night, church this morning, and and pumpkin carving tonight.

So, other than the fact that my wife wants to strangle me (do we really need 2 crappy boats???), it was a good and productive weekend...

I will post some pics and video at some point in the next couple of days.

1. You da man! Neglectful behavior toward family business, even the perception of which can be the bane of a boat resto project.
2. Explain not your dual crappy craft motives, but suffer the slings and arrows of this spousal rebuff in stoic silence just as you suffer the itch and sting of the fiberglass. It's all part of it.
3. Yeah, and posthaste cause yo peeps be hankering for some pics and vids until then.

Howdy PM,
Just found your resto thread and have thoroughly enjoyed the light hearted humor and your dedication...Keep up the great progress...

I really enjoy the videos...

I too, have just recently embarked on the journey of restoring my little bass boat.

Hope to be able to tag along with your progress and glean as much knowledge as I can from your trials and tribulations.

This is my first boat ever and I have made the insane decision that I too, must restore this boat to almost better than new condition...
I find that it is an affliction that comes in life any time you have a "first" of anything, like the first car you ever owned... you just have to fix it up...

Anyhow, I know that with the wealth of knowledge available here on Iboats, both you and I will one day be pleasuring ourselves and our families on the wet blue yonder...

Best of luck and Godspeed.

may i also suggest that you tell our tinny friends to cover there puter screens, and lower the volume when the vid of the chain saw comes out

Thanks Oops...you have been a huge help!!! ..... Unless I get a quick taker, the "S" word is going to get crushed by a tractor...monster truck style.... Hide the women and children, it may get ugly...

Happy halloween everyone.. I know very little about boats, but I can get after a pumpkin.

GT, Glad to have you on board. Thanks for the kind words. Boats are supposed to be fun, so I am trying to humor myself through this little mid-life crisis that has tackled me from behind...

Hydra, you crack me up as up always... Look for the vid tomorrow...
