Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

Just got back in from the shop... Got a lot done this weekend.

I have already learned a TON in this process. 6 weeks ago I did not even the difference between a stringer and merc. Believe it or not, I am having fun.... That was the goal when I started this process; A long way to go, but like old saying goes...You have to eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Right on sounds like your moving right along, just think when you are done you will be an old pro . The donor boat was a real score. I never noticed what you paid for it. I am debating on upgrading my drive train and am looking as to what a donor would be worth. I know up here I can't get much. They want 2 grand for a hull with no drive train and trailer. Seems all the scores are south of the border. I only paid 2 for mine and run it a season and could have run it another 2-3 and maybe longer before the floor would have gotten soft. I was offered 2500 on the weekend for my drivetrain but I told my friend he could have the 3.0 for 1300 and I can regear the outdrive top end to match what I decide to use for a motor. I don't imagine it is any harder then the rear ends I have set up. He is building a houseboat . So I will have more then one winter to decide whether to upgrade or not and what I sell him. I wish you could strip down a car as easy as a boat drivetrain. Maybe the boat goes back together the same for originality. I know with the gps mine was running along at 39 miles an hr with 4 on board, that is fast enough for me. But I always been a sleeper type of guy be it in my cars and I like to build stuff and might just build something for it..hmmmmmm a sleeper on the head pond would **** alot of boaters off.

keep up the enthusiasm and videos I enjoy your show

This one has really suckered me in. You have to be drawn to a boat to put this much work into it.

They really are like giant vacuum cleaners, aren't they? And you might even be drawn on/in the boat by the time you are done...LOL:D

Great progress,Keep at it!

Best Regards,

Continued thanks for following along with me and helping out. There is absolutely no way I would have even thought about doing a project like this without your help. Here is the video update from this past weekend. Its about 9.5 minutes. Hope you enjoy.

Thanks,

I went through a range of emotions starting at 4:15. I laughed at you some and wept a little too for ya. Ugh, what a huge amount of work bro! Keep at it, you'll get there:)

Now, you mentioned you had a tough time getting that OD off...

At 9:27 I see that the bearing is stuck on the yoke shaft...

Um, I make no claim to be an engine guy, but I believe that was supposed to stay in the housing when you pulled off the OD. Might that explain why it was such a bear to get off, eh?

be glad you are not working on a metal boat patrick.

metal boats use electro magnetism to draw you nearer. they allure you to take them home by only showing you that "they just need "tlc"

they just want to be rubbed.......well.......that is how it starts..........you get too close......and faster than a cat with claws....you loose an appendage !

It's a new method. Pulling the bearing out is the way all the pros are doing it, now.

Actually, I think you are quite right. In fact, my mechanic friend nailed it when he said the shaft was caught on something. However, there is really no way to access it (unless I guess you remove the whole bell housing, etc...), so we felt like the only way to remove the drive was to keep pulling until it came lose????

Who needs a bearing puller when you can just bang your brand new outdrive up and down like a mad man and watch it slowly work itself out.

Of course, now I am having my first official "oh crap" moment of itchapalooza 2011 (my new thread title). - I hope that I did not do irreparable damage to my drive. Ughh... Help anyone?

Thanks Jason,
Patrick

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 5).

the heavy sheets of wood are because the are wet....stand them on edge....put a fan on them....and they will dry

the hard stuff in the transom that they used to bond the wood to the transom was peanut butter.

a good grinder with a 24 grit will chew that stuff right off.

as far as your drive......uh....bud........that is the gimbal bearing on the drive shaft. that bearing usually stays in the boat.
i cannot for the life of me, figure out how that stayed on to the shaft when you pulled the drive.....to pull a gimbal bearing it can be really tough.....really really tough

some times with a drive that has been on for a while.....it can be a real battle to get off.....

fight to get it off?.......
i have never seen it,,,,,,and can only imagine that was the hardest fight to get a drive off i have ever seen or heard of.

Woh baby! That OD must have been a bear to get off!

I can see you guys...

"Man, that thing is really stuck in there!" "Yah, lets yank on it more!"

Hey, OD is off and bearing is pulled in one fell swoop:)

Hey, we have methods to relieve that fiberglass itch. Shoot me a PM when you are interested:D

as far as the itch.......start taping your wrists and feet on that tyvec, wrap a scarf around your neck. or wear a turtle neck and tape the suit to it....if you use a scarf be careful ! a scarf can get caught in the grinder and choke you in a second.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 8).

Truthfully, the itch has not been bad.... I'm just having a lit fun with the stereotype. My wrists have itched a little, but a shower and some Cetaphil kills it immediately.

I'm more worried about the outdrive. Yes, it was an absolute ***** to get it off. It took about 2 hours of prying, lifting, rocking, shaking and it finally came off when I would life the outdrive all the way up and just let it fall - while applying pressure points.

I know that bearing can come out, but my question is whether I just did something the "hard way" or whether I really damaged the housing and/or the bearing, by forcing it out the way I did. It looks like the bearing may need to be replaced anyway, so maybe that is worse case scenario?

Also, for those that have seen the U-Joint at the end of the video... can it be refurbed or is it beyond the point of salvage? Its pretty damn rusty.

Thanks guys,
rpm

For the price of the Ujoints, and the peace of mind they bring, swap em out. I would also plan on doing water pump and thermostat at the some time as PM.
FYI: those lights on the bow look to be simlar to mine http://www.barnegatlt.com/ I would keep em. They cant replace a hand held spot light, but they are nice in the evening.

Thanks Wildman. Appreciate you chiming in. The dock lights are staying. I have actually already ordered some chrome replacements off ebay that look really sharp.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 8).

Pardon the bump, but I found this little piece on the web (sterndrive.com), and it describes my situation exactly. I am posting here, because it may help someone in the future that experienced what I did on the OD removal.

________________________
If your bearing was making noise
chances are water has been rusting the u-joint drive shaft and the shaft may
have actually rusted to the inner gimbal bearing race
.
When this happens the drive can get stuck and it can be very difficult to remove. [uhh, affirmative, I can vouch for that]
Lifting the back of the drive by hand and letting it drop on it's own a few times
can help to free the drive up. Be gentle at first. [this is how I finally got mine off, but I was not as "gentle" as I should have been]. You will break things if you
start to really slam the unit down [exactly what I did - about 5 times, and, yes, I did break something...I think it was the speedo tube connection]. Remember, once it comes loose it could fall right
off and get damaged or injure yourself. Stuck units usually come off about 1/4" and then no further. [again, right on...]
A few wide chisels gently tapped into the space between the bell housing and
the front face of the drive can help.
Tap a chisel into either side down low
right above the bottom studs and then lift and drop the drive a few more times
making sure to gently tap the chisels in a little more after each drop.
Keep at it for a while being careful not to crack he housings with too much
force on the chisels and drive. Soft aluminum dents [correct again] and cracks easily so take
your time and walk away from the job if you get impatient.

If the water leak has seriously rusted the u-joint shaft to the gimbal bearing
the bearing may actually come out with the drive. This is not normal. [ding, ding, ding...I know this now].

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 8).

A BIG BIG tip that isn't posted enough on here is placing a 2X4 between the top cap of the drive and the gimbal ring. Then simply lift up on the drive to separate it. Or if it's super stuck, bolt the trim rams back on, and trim up. The 2x4 will push the drive off every time. No slamming or prying or hammering. None of that is good for a boat! Next time! :)

You are doing excellent work, btw.

well look at it this way PM, now when you rehab the gimbal it will be easier, that is once you have heated and beated the bearing off of the yoke....... definitely replace u-joints. you already have the hard part completed for several parts of the OD, Gimbal and Leg rehabs you will want to do.

gotta love the itch....... remember, don't look at your boat wrong or you will start to itch.....

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 8).

patrick, the u joint and drive shaft are bad enough to replace.......so dont worry about getting the gimbal bearing off.......just remove the u joint. (this can be a pain all by it self)
the u joints come in a kit with the shaft, any how.

im sorry you had to fight that drive like that..... again....it is not normal.

as far as damaging the face of the bell or the drive, it does not look like it.........but after you get the drive back on and test the unit in the water.....give it 4 hours seatryal, and pull the drive again....(it wont be hard to do and you will be a pro at it by then.) if you feel water is leaking between the bell and the drive.....just use 2 drive gaskets, and bolt her down tight.

For one, you never need to pardon yourself for posting to your own thread. If you want to wax poetic or share barbeque tips it's your own discretion. I mean . . . you can't hijack your own thread is all I'm sayin'. Your thread is already helping other folks along as an inspiration and by containing helpful tips. I'm going out to the garage to put a fan on my plywood right after this post. :) I think we can all tell you've gained a good bit of confidence in the weeks since your ebay purchase. Keep it up Patrick cause you're like a house on fire.

My tip as you go into the serious fiberglass grinding would be (if you have not already) check into the 36 grit flapper disks because they really eat away unwanted fiberglass with pretty good control.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1, episode 8).

Well, I have pulled several over the last few years and have never seen that. So I would agree thats not normal. I have seen it, where we had one heck of a time getting the gimbal bearing to come out using the correct puller. I'm just glad you didn't have both the problems, the bearing stuck to the u joints and to the housing. you would still be banging on that thing.
I'm also glad to see you can look back and laugh at it now. :p
Great perspective.
