Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

hi patrick.

vid one....

i would just heavy glass the whole transom inside......the extra board you want to add is ok...your call....but due to the transom not going all the way to the edge.....you will want to heavily glass the inner transom......at least 4-5 layers of 1708/csm sandwiches. I would apply them all at once....wet on wet.
watch your temps on cure.....when glassing over three layers of 1708/csm.....the temps of the cure can get too hot and bake the resin.
for this reason....you might want to do 2 layers.....csm and 1708.....another csm and 1708......then wait a wee bit till the cure starts to cool down.....then add the next 2 sandwiches of csm/1708.......

this will still give you a good chemical bond. plus the prolonged heat in the cure will give you the stiffness you are looking for....plus the 4 sandwiches will give you the stregnth you need in that area.

then you can grind the outer area with no worries of going thru and wrecking your bond to the curvature of the transom.

over all......it looks great patrick.....
you are really catching on to this well.....

what is next ?
Mccraney for prez?.......lol

cheers bud

The transom turned out great! Good work!

Hey, maybe you & Jas can run on a combined tix! Yep, that way you get both the Tinny's & the 'Glasser's votes.

Really nice work there Patrick, I bet the transom has already stiffened up considerably. I agree with Oops's comments, if you do that you should be able to pull a battle ship with her!

Patrick don't be concerned to much about the clamping on the side pieces of the transom..Now I do not recommend not clamping the center transom as that is a position thing . Nice work by the way. Pressure is enough on the side pieces...like I said earlier if you put enough pb in there and get the air out with pressure. Make sure you make a good mixture of pb . It don't take much, I have laid many pieces of plywood in my day as a fiberglasser.

....If you have to newly wire or rewire anything you will need to buy wire anyway, so you just figure out what you need and buy the correct colors. Here is a nice chart for marine wiring colors. They also apparently sell wire but I can't vouch for their prices or service; I just like the chart. Alternatively, you can get a very basic chart from GlenL here. s.

Mark: Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the heads up/leads on the wiring stuff/info. Really appreciate it.

Ok fellas: possible chance that I can sneak away to the shop mid-week (either today or tomorrow) if my schedule clears...

Quick Statement/Question: I really like the idea of just glassing the rest of my inner transom. Not only does it save me the step of cutting boards, applying resin, curving them a tad, clamping them in, etc..., but it also really allows me to preserve the barrel curve that is more pronounced the wider you go on my transom...

So my question: these CSM/1708 sandwiches we are talking about... Do I apply them to (a) the whole inner transom (e.g. over my existing center piece) and the outside flanks; or (b) just the outside areas that don't have a board.

My thought process was:

1. Do a fillet around the existing center piece.
2. Tab that in.
3. Cover it with a layer of 1708.
4. Do 4 to 5 CSM/1708 sandwiches on each side and maybe do another tab from the center piece to that after its down; and then
5. Do another larger layer of 1708 over the whole thing - the board and sandwiches?

Thoughts? Thanks for your help.

That ^^^ is how I see OOPS explanation. I'd made the Fillet a nice big concave one so the glass will lay down nice. It will be strong as the dickens. (I'm not really sure how strong Dickens is, but my Mom always thought he was pretty strong, cuz she always said that!);)

^^^^ Now that's funny... Well played.

I think I need to link Jason's Islander thread in my signature to say something like: "If there is an inside joke you don't get, the explanation most likely lies HERE."

4. Do 4 to 5 sandwiches on each side

Oh boy, fiberglass boat building seems very appealing to me today:D

Those that need to know, oh they know. Just like when the wife gives me the 'Yeah, I know.......' look....

You definitely hit the transom outta the park, so you'll do the same when you start the side areas. Either wood & glass or all 'glass...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Hi patrick......hope im not too late.

A and B

The larger the continuous sheet of glass....the stronger......however the bulk of the glass in the inside may make your transom too thick.

use one layer of csm over everything.....fillets....new transom....curved inner glass....and around the sides 6 inches.
1708 on the sides....slightly into the new transom.....but well away from the key hole.....you will need a few inches clearance between outside edge of the inner transom plate. but enough to get a good grab on the transom wood..wrap those around to the side of the boat.....then build up the sides with your sandwiches....

The reason for the csm sandwiches....is that the csm in the 1708 is very thin....and stitched in....it is ok.....but for insurance sake....just like woven roving........add a layer of csm definitely on the sub straight and between the layers of 1708

Yep, pastrami & swiss on rye, hot mustard, bread & butter pickles, lettuce & tomato sounds just about right. While you're making mine, go ahead & fix yourself something nice too......

BAD RACCOON! BACK IN YOUR BOX! SORRY, I HAVE TO KEEP HIM LOCKED UP & OFF OF JAS'S THREAD. HE'S A HANDFUL! GETS CRANKY WHEN HE'S HUNGRY.....

JBC (coonie) - I think you have a new iboats nickname. Its more fun to play apple cart turnover on Jason's thread while he is sleeping soundly between 10 to midnight.

Ward - thanks a ton... Appreciate the heads up.... Wish me luck! This will be my first effort with larger lay-ups and 1708.... Don't let me down, girly man bubble roller....

Okay guys: Didn't get a ton done of the boat this weekend, because I did this:

That picture is from sunrise on my saturday morning duck hunt with several really good friends... We had a blast hanging out and had a good hunt, but that sort of eliminated any Saturday work. Notice the geese flying high... {not sure by the pic. insists on loading sideways... Turn your head to enjoy the view}

This kinda reminded me of a pic I took last year whilst eagle watching around Alton, IL...
