Just a thought, whilst u have the oil pan dropped, take the timing chain cover off and check the belt/tensions and replace the lower front oil seal whilst ur at it as they can only be changed with the pan dropped (no matter how hard u try and swear with the pan still in place!). You will get to be introduced to a new tool, the harmonic balancer puller) so its all good.
Project is looking great.

replace the valve covers and gaskets (is chrome blasphemy on these black motors?).

well kinda.....actually it is..... i like the chrome......but the problem is that the stuff is so cheap, that it leaks all the time.

I actually took a set of chromies off my boat motor....because they leaked all over my new black block paint !

Sand:
Thanks for stopping by; Although I am still learning and, thus, understood about a 1/3 of what you said, it sounds like a good plan, so I'll get me "engine mentor" to walk me through this while we have it out.

Oops... thanks for the heads up.... Since it's hidden in the dog-house 90% of the time, I think I will go with "function" over "form" - and stay "pure" to the Merc black at the same time...

And, while that Jim Jones (excuse me, Jasoutside) is a very charismatic, charming and persuasive fellow, I'm still holding my ground....

Glad everybody was well rested & ready to rumble this week.

I worked in the garage but just around the boat not on the boat:(

Have a great week.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Okay guys:
I'm taking on a project that is officially over my head. First Project Boat: It's a 1975 Chris Craft Lancer. I know pics are mandatory (and video is preferred). You will have plenty of both. I have gone through some of the more "legendary" threads on this site (FriscoBoater, WoodonGlass, Oops, Archbuilder...)... So, I know who you guys are and what you are capable of; I am calling on you heavyweights (and fellow lightweights) for help and guidance along the way.

This will NOT be one of those threads where I impart wisdom and experience to the DIY masses... Rather, it will be one of those threads where the experienced guys "laugh" with me (at me) as I take this on. Perhaps other can learn from my mistakes that I will surely make along the way. There is no point in doing this (or anything really) if you can't have fun with it. So, I will do my best to keep you entertained, and you feel free to say whatever you want... (critique is welcome; humor is preferred).

I look forward to making some new friends, learning a ton, cussing a little, and laughing a lot.....................

Stay tuned - vids below!
~Patrick

In my new found capacity as an adult & w/ a recovering inner raccoon, I felt obligated to point out that the bolded portion above ^^^, I'd say is a textbook definition of FAIL!

Success on all remaining & fully firing cylinders. :D :cool:Carry on........................

Glad to see your still resisting the heartless Tin Can attempts at brain washing:eek:

I think it's getting close to time for an updated Glasser and Tinny video.
Stay away from the Kool aid too.
Make sure you don't use Alu cups either, you would have to hold them together with rivets and then gulvet to keep them from leaking.
LOL

Yuck it up boyz, yuk it up!

Well alrighty then: When the AL dust gives ya Alzheimers, we wont tell ya where you left the Jet & Islander.....You know, out in the garage:eek:, under a tarp out back in the woods. Maybe down at PMC's place for safe keeping, we wouldn't want you to park the truck & trailer at the boat ramp & forget which one is yours:D.....

Jezz, I am so not hanging out on iBoats when I get to getting busy working on mine. Tough crowd, really tough crowd.....

We were all over there for the floatation debate, and over here for some transom planning. Been a bit of discussion about a rubrail over my way. Yep, team building experience, you know like being snowed in at Thanksgiving: 8-10hrs w/ the fam damily :)rolleyes:) & we're good. 24-48hrs and its no longer all smiles & fun:) when your forced to stay together inside.

Ok, back to work you hacks! Keep up the great progress, so I'm motivated to work on mine:cool:

Heck...he's already leaving his vehicle at the boat ramp...running no less....

Thanks for stopping by fellas...It's all good (I hope) between me and jas... We sort of have an informal, gentlemen's agreement that back-handed sarcasm is permitted....If not encouraged....He'll get me back soon enough.. Don't you worry.

Got a busy day today, so I'll prolly chill out on the Tom-foolery...

Man, I'm dying to get some work done on my boat... I want stringers in there ASAP. Have a good one!

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Hi, my name is Dave and I'm in Nashville -

Pmccraney, you visited my thread when I first put it up there and sent the invite to your thread, so I came to pay a visit. This forum is a daily read for me as I wade into the unknown with you guys as my guide...

review: I have an 84' Cheetah 166 and I'm faced with all new stringers and deck, etc. I removed the Cap (pics below) and now I have a somewhat flimsy hull - I made as many measurements as I could - and I read a post by Oops that we should support the Hull so that the Cap will go back on after the deck is in. So, my question is

1. Do guys put straps around the hull? Most pictures I've seen just gut it and get busy with the wood making sure it doesn't get any wider than the original... I thought about just working the stringers, put the cap back on and then glass in the deck, THOUGHTS, COMMENTS on that?

2. I'm still learning how to navigate this forum - I need to learn how to create a signature and add my thread to it - but I'm sure that's in the FAQ section... oh, and my pics are thumbnail size, guess I need to learn more about the forum while I'm learning about my boat project

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

Dave, welcome over..

Man, I just got through typing a small book in reply to your questions and then I clicked on one of your pictures for reference and lost my whole reply... What a bummer. Give me some time to re-create and I will hit you back.

You are on the right track...

[EDIT: Dave, good talking with you this afternoon.. Glad to connect with another iboater... Hope our discussion helped and good luck with your build...].
