Hi!
I plan to by a Mariner Magnum 40, 4 cyl, 2 stroke (1994-95?) from a friend that had given it up. He is not very good with outboards so he decided to by a new one. The engine looks very good, so I have decided to give it a try without using piles of money in a work shop
I have no special experience with outboards, but have done some work on car engines. I have not started to work on it yet, but some of you may know where to focus the energy based on the following problem:
The engine starts but die immideatly.

It is a spark on all spark plugs so my guess is some kind of a fuel problem. All cylinders seems to have good compression, but it have not yet been measured properly. Could it be a total engine failure even though the compression "feels good"?
Could it be an ignition problem even though the spark look ok? How do I time the ignition on an outboard? With a timing light?
Could anyone give me a short instruction in general terms of where I should start and mybee what I initially should give a more thorough check?

Fair winds and following seas to all of you!
PM, Commander, Royal Norwegian Navy
