I guess I should have asked this question before I tore into the motor, but..
The compression on my Merc Mark 58ae is as follows:

#1 = 122 lbs.
#2 = 119 lbs.
#3 = 119 lbs.
#4 = 120 lbs.

This is OK, right?...I hope.

What was the compression in these motors when they were brand-new?

Good'nuff..I don't now new offhand, but it's a 40 year old motor, and those numbers are fine!

Re: Mark 58AE Compression

Thanks, Scaaty. Just needed to hear the numbers are okay. Seems like it has pretty good compression compared to many old motors, and they're all so close to each other.

My nephew and I put some time into the motor and boat today. Finished the fuel pump (simple) and got the big nut off of the flywheel without killing ourselves. I bought a puller that has three arms with hooked ends that reach to the outside edge of the flywheel. soaked the middle of the flywheel with BP Blaster and managed to budge it a little bit. We soaked it again and bought new tires for the trailer and put them on, then took the boat to the carwash for a good bath. We'll continue in the morning.

I live in a beautiful region of northeast Oklahoma which is very rural, with the Illinois River only ten minutes away, several lakes that are from 15 to 75 miles from home, and miles of hilly woods that are perfect for my other hobby, hunting and shooting sports.

The only problem with this outdoor wonderland is trying to find parts or tools on the fly. We were ready to pull the lower unit at about 4 pm, and I found that I didn't have a 5/8-inch hex head driver. Neither did any auto shop in town...so we're stuck till tomorrow.

All that's left to do is to install the new timing belt and the water pump impeller.

Wow.

I'm jacked up! This old boat and motor may be back on the water tomorrow!!!

Re: Mark 58AE Compression

I would NOT use a 3 jaw puller, or you stand a good chance of cracking the flywheel. Get a steering wheel type 3 bolt puller. Tighten it up, then a good rap on the middle large screw..tighten, rap, repeat

I guess I read your mind, Scaaty, because I just got back from AutoZone, where I borrowed (after leaving a deposit) a steering wheel/harmonic balancer puller that I can bolt to the three holes! Also had to get a hex head driver for that hidden bolt in the lower unit, so I can replace the impeller. It's cloudy and windy today, with a good chance for thunderstorms, and I'm working on the boat out in the open. Hopefully it won't rain (much) so I can finish this motor.

If it DOES rain, I might get some wet-sanding done! Maybe I'll hold a golf club in one hand...hey, hold my beer and watch this, guys!

Re: Mark 58AE Compression

Caught the weather channel this morning...got some mean stuff your way! Used to live in Illinois, and have done a lot of month long cross country rides on my Harley Bagger. Ya say NE Kansas? Think it was in 92..stayed in St. Joseph. then taking old truck route 36. Got as far as Marysville, so hot and humid I only made it until 1:00,,,room with a pool!. Rained 4 1/2 inches overnight. Same thing next day..made it to Dodge City, and that evening the weather radar had solid RED on both sides of Dodge. My God, what a LIGHT SHOW!. I think there are more hail damaged cars in Dodge than shiny flat sheetmetal! I miss those good old Midwest storms though. Living in the Pacific Northwest now its just 4-5 months of great weather, followed by what seems like years of gray drizzle crap.
Of course my youthful days of Tornado chasing on the Harley's are coming to an end..age..hard to get, and no fun when ya get there:eek: :D

I Got The Flywheel Off!

I Got The Flywheel Off!

I've retired from motorcycles...so far. But I remember riding from San Diego to Oklahoma on an old hard-tail with ape-hanger bars. Ran into a hard hail storm while in the Flagstaff area and about fried to a crisp in the deserts. I made the trip in three days so as not to kill myself, but when I finally got home, my *** hurt for a week.

I GOT THE FLYWHEEL OFF!

I kept loosening and tightening the puller and tapping the flywheel and the puller's center bolt. I put all of my weight on the wrench and suddenly there was a loud PING! and I was trying to catch my balance, so as not to plant my face in the ground.

The flywheel FLEW up in a graceful arc and landed in the boat. Maybe that's why they call it a FLYwheel! :)

I'm now re-reading the manual's instructions on replacing the timing belt and aligning it properly with the magneto.

I need to set the dwell too. Yes, I have the dreaded $50 shop manual. But sometimes it goes into too MUCH detail, so that something like replacing the timing belt or the impeller is buried in fifteen pages of how to tear down and rebuild the entire motor.

Can some of you guys who have set the dwell, replaced or aligned the timing belt, and replaced the impeller please give me some real-world suggestions and guidance about performing these tasks on a Mercury Mark 58ae inline 4?

Almost there! Woo-hoo!!!

47 years in the saddle..7 bikes..losing the edge (and the jerks with zero attentive span (cell phone) I have to avoid to get to the mountains aint worth it any longer (I'm happy in my shop wrenching anyway).
Hardtail..OHHH..butt hurts thinking about it (I have a HT Sporty Dragbike I built frame up..3 miles TOPS!) Pix of my 3 Harleys in Thumbnails below..dragbike, second I'm the ugly one in the left ..me , not the bike..thats my Shovelhead, and my buddy with his Texas Chopper..last is the Bagger heading to a Norcal ride to see my brother a few years ago..have 4 other bikes too..dirtbikes, Jap crap, light and fast..
Dude, heres a link to a couple old Merc Forums..wizards that will know those old 58's. Timing super critical as ya know..might try the AOMCI site too. heres a link to both. (I'm still giggling on the "FLY" wheel story)
Also anybody need a good Flywheel from a 58 Mark 30, I have one..yard sale'ed in two weeks, so PM me..

Seems I can't get the last Bagger pic to show here 'tis again..first year Evo (84), 169,000 miles (good maintenance, but only new breather, and lifters, and the fork and wheel bearings)...I'll make room in the casket for it when I decide to move on and keep up the 'ride".. and been everywhere with it, and through more weather than I care to BS about unless we are around a campfire in the middle of nowhere, and anyway from sea level to 12000 feet..Death valley still on the list (been to all National Parks but that and Mt. McKinley). The first day the roads open up at Mt. Rainier I will be up there (usually in June)...then park them all and use the boats until Labor Day and the tourist (RV's) go away..then back to getting lost on two wheels

Re: Mark 58AE Compression

Scaaty, I sure like that drag bike.

I do 3D design and animation, and I've fooled around with designing Harleys, just for fun.

Here are a couple of still shots of 3D Harley drag bikes I've designed. I've also done a few nice bobbers.
