I have the plastic ones in. They were easy and look good.

But!

They look amateur compared to a nice rolled tube!

I now regret not going that route. Ah well.

I can't find it, Gibbles. He had a nice diagram. Anyway - he uses a piece of all thread, and 2 nyloc nuts and 1 washer. The nuts are large enough to flare the end of the tube. First you cut the tube a little less than 1/4" longer than the transom and slather with 5200 sealant. fit the tube through the transom, start one nut on the all thread so the dome faces the finished end of the tubs. Feed the nut/all thread through the tube and start the 2nd nut on the thread so the dome faces the tube and tighten until the tube is flared over. Remove the nut from the newly flared end, put the big washer and nut on and finish flattening the flare by tightening the nuts again. The nylocs self center to make a factory looking flare.

I hope this makes sense. Wish I could draw on the puter, A pic is self-explanatory.

I have seen the method using the lock nuts, 3/4in bolt, and some large washers.

My main issue is that my transom is in, and my splash well is in place...

how can I roll the ends of the tube when I can't get a washer between the splash well and transom...




And just thinking about it... maybe if I roll it from the outside of the boat, and trim an end of the washer off to clear the splash well?

Trimming the washer should work, Gib. Isn't the new tube flared on one end? My thing was using two nylocs would only work if the splashwell wasn't in. And you really don't need two nylocs, only one. Since your SW is in feed the tube from the SW side and the trimmed washer should do fine. You need something to hold the tube so the other end flares.

My main worry is having enough space to get the tube installed with the splash well in place...

I'm having trouble understanding your issue about not having enough room to use the flanging tool...how close is your splashwell to the transom?

I did mine using the tool after the aplaswell was installed. Got any pics?

I just cut the tube so it was about 1/16" or a slight bit more longer than the transom thickness (after lots of careful dry-run measuring) and assembled the tool & carefully and gradually cranked down on it, after smearing 5200 all over the tube.

And I forgot to drill the drain before I installed the transom so I will have to drill while installed...

I had planned on using a drill press but I forgot to mark the location before I removed the transom for the last time...

The transom fit so tight I had to pry it out each time and then repair the minor damage on the bottom of the wood via epoxy.

...but before I removed the transom the drain tube was installed perfectly, just a little lower than the splash well allowing for a nice smooth drain.

I should have some room to work with while I'm drilling it out though...

as long as I can get the flared end past the splash well I should be ok.


I'm not planning on drilling it out until I can get the boat in the garage, I plan on coating the inside with epoxy, allow to cure, then install the tube coated with 5200.



And I got a nice looking "leather" teleflex steering wheel ordered, got an open box new steering wheel on fleebay for $25 shipped.

Can't you insert it with the pre-rolled end outside? that's the way I did it.

Hope you post some pics of the steering wheel when you get it, sounds like a cool look for the Jet Star.

Looking at your thread, I'll try from the outside first.

looks like I won't need much of a flare, and it would be prettier with the nice big flare on the outside

I'll mess around with it once I get the holes drilled out and see what I can do... right now it's all trying to work it out in my head...

Nothing to special, but I think it will be nice

kinda reminds me of the steering wheel in my old RX-7

That will look nice. Mine has a round spot in the center where a medallion could be inserted. I'd like to find a Starcraft one but chances of finding something that would fit are probably slim to none.

One of the places I service makes signs, I bet they could make a pretty good looking medallion...

I'm set to go back in there this week once a part arives, if I remember I may have to ask him about it... but I would perfer he pay me for the work I did last month before I start asking questions (my boat $$ )...


And I looked around at steering wheels in the price range of $40 and less, but everything I liked was $60+...

There was another wheel just like this one but used and beat up that went for about $40, then I ran into this baby.

Nobody bid against me

And I got my steering link ordered, hopefully its the right one.

My manual called for PN 89638a3, found a few of those on ebay for about $50 shipped.

During my searching I found another steering link PN: 89638a1...

It seems that 89638a1 was replaced by 89638a3

I could not find much on what is different...

So I bought the 89638a1 link kit for $25 shipped

looking at the picture the link arm seems to be correct.

I also got the boat in the garage last night, heater is on and is seemed to be about 70 in the garage this morning, the 5200 should hopefully cure now...

The 5200 is finally starting to harden

And I had an issue with my heater, the adjustment knob got stuck, then I turned it to hard and I heard a snap... now the knob turns free...

took it apart and managed to muck up a repair, checked for leaks and I'm gtg again...

I'll have to find a new valve for it though...

If I can get someone to drop by this weekend I'll mount the 65hp on there and see how it sits.

Sounds like your boat is coming along fine.
I don't know to much about steering but have some experience with kicker mounts.
If you can, mount the kicker on the transom.
If you can, mount it on the port side.
Mount the kicker 2 inches higher than the main to clear the shaft that controls steering on the main.
Mount the kicker and check all clearance for both motors.
Buy or build a stainless steel tie bar that fits the front of the motors.
The idea is to be able to lift the kicker with the tie bar attached.

I have been thinking more about the steering setup as I'm getting closer to having everything mounted, and this makes much more sense now.

Input please; my main engine is a long shaft and I now have a 20 in transom, my kicker has a 15in shaft...

I was not to worried about this as I had been running with a kicker mount that held the engine up a bit higher than the 20in transom sits...

Raising up another 2in may be an issue?

what do you think?

Not really, Gib. And It won't hurt to have a deeper well due to the higher transom. The easiest way to raise the SW is to shorten it, but then you have other things to mess with.
