Mercruiser 4.3LX Alpha One Shifting causing stalling

I have a question for the experts on this board. I have a 1995 Rinker Captiva 190 with a Mercruiser 4.3LX Alpha One engine. I have had it for about a month and it never caused any problems until 2 weeks ago. I launched my boat off of the trailer, put it in reverse, backed it off, had a nice day on the lake, no problems til the end of the day I was idling towards the launch ramp, put it in neutral to wait my turn and when engaging fwd, it stalled and wouldn't start. I didn't know what was going on so I had to get towed back (thought I ran out of gas). Put some gas in it, and it started right up on the trailer.

Fast forward to this past weekend. Launched it, started it up at the pier, no problems, idles fine. Hopped into the boat, engaged fwd and it stalled and wouldn't restart. Luckily another guy there helped me out telling me about the shift interrupt switch so I was able to push the shift plate back to the "neutral" position and it fired up and off I went. I went back to the pier to pick up some friends and the same stuff happened again, pushed the shifter plate into the neutral position, fired it up, hit fwd a little harder this time and off I went. Boated around for the day, no issues really as long as I hit fwd moderately hard. Fast forward to the end of the day, after tubing, fired up the engine and every time I try to engage fwd, it would stall. My buddy was with me so I had him shifting while I watched the shifter plate and the plate would rotate just enough to engage the shift interrupt but the plate wouldn't pop back so the wheel would go back into the V groove therefore the switch is holding in the engine off position. Eventually I just unplugged the shift interrupt switch and was able to run it no problem back to the ramp. I was able to get to the pier and key it off when I got there.

I have read countless threads on this and from what I can tell, most people will tell me lower shift cable. But my concern is this: Before the first trip that caused this 2 weeks ago, I didn't have not one problem with this and it just suddenly popped up. I wouldn't think the cable would fail just out of the blue let alone it's not doing this every single time but it seems like at the end of this past Sunday, it failed hard. Could it be adjustment or do I need to replace this cable without a doubt? I need to get this resolved asap. Thanks for everybody's help.

Argh, just what I didn't want to hear. I did a little searching around for a replacement online, do you have a link to the kit or cable? Looks like i'll need a kit to replace some gaskets, seals and bellows? I'm still a rookie with marine maintenance work. Thanks in advance.

Is it this kit? Lower Shift Cable Kit for Mercruiser 19543T2 19543T1, GLM 21450 - Sierra 18-2603 - iboats

Are those kits pretty universal for alpha one gen 2's? What do you mean about the trim sender/limit?

Do I truly need the special socket to do this job? I am fairly handy but not a pro mechanic by any means. I've seen some repair manual links floating around these forums.

Nope,... Just cut off the tag end of the old cable to remove it, 'n the new cables allow that piece to screw in, after the housin' is installed,...

Links to the manuals can be found by followin' the links, up in the Adults Only section, at the top of this forum,...

Anything else I should order with this kit? Looked like I'll need 2-4-C lube and bellows adhesive?

Do the fluids need to be drained to do this or not? I'd prefer not to. I don't think I have enough gear oil to replenish.

Re: Mercruiser 4.3LX Alpha One Shifting causing stalling

Tackled about 60% of this last night. Here are my issues:

- The slide shaft set screw was rusted to the slide shaft and I twisted it off trying to back it out. Going to try and have a friend extract it and clean up the threads but what are the thread specs on this so he knows what tap to use?

- I guess I got an old style cable that has the brass nut on the outdrive side which I have to tighten with a special tool that I don't have. Thoughts on how to tighten this w/o the special deep socket??

- My cable kit came with a bunch of O-Rings (i'd guess 4-6 of them), where do all of these go? I only removed one O-Ring and that was the one to the left of the drive shaft tunnel (not sure I remember what the hole is for).

Once I get this stuff resolved, I can put the outdrive back on and adjust the cable from the engine side.

Ayuh,... A New "slide shaft" comes with the new cable Kit, if yer talkin' 'bout what I Think yer talkin' 'bout,...

That's the New style, aft entry cable, the tag end is snipped off to remove the old cable, 'n the piece screws into the new cable, after it's screwed in, no special socket necessary,...

The o-rings go on the input shaft of the drive, or atleast 3 of 'em,...

My kit looks like they forgot to include the new slide shaft, they included 2 of the cable end plastic pieces (I was wondering why there was 2 of those in there).

Secondly, I don't know what you mean by "tag end". What I ended up doing to remove my old cable was pulling the slide shaft away from the bell housing, cutting the cable off so it was short enough for me to put my socket on it to loosen it up. I loosened that brass fitting all the way and pulled my cable out. I installed my new cable from the aft end, through the new bellows, through the transom and to the engine. Now I have the brass fitting which I cannot tighten w/o the special tool. What am I missing here? I don't follow your logic.

I am also unsure why there are 2 large gaskets when it looks like I only need one. Help?
