Good luck to Mercury and its employee's.
Rough time to be in the engine business, whether it be diesel, recreational, automotive or otherwise.

Re: Mercury might leave WI

it really amazes me the people that have ridden the coat tails of the unions in this country and while never joining or supporting them. now that that times have changed, are willing to condemn and blame them for the economy

Hmmm, worked 4 union jobs over 15 years, 2 of which are no longer in business, mostly because of the unions.

One of those unions lied to us for months as the company paid our ins premiums - but the union said the payments were never received, but the court documents showed otherwise. They were sitting on $1.1 million that was supposed to pay for our insurance, and the local president and vp were sitting in Hawaii.

Dad was a union man for 10 years, then worked for one for 34 years.

Granddad ran a union for 24 years.

Their advice to me: get out, they ain't what they are supposed to be any more.

Ayuh,.... While I Totally Agree that Unions are absolutely Counter-productive,...
The State of Wisconsin isn't all that Business Friendly either.... Pretty much another Michigan....

Not as bad as Michigan, Illinois, or Minnesota. Sure the tax rates are a bit high, but the services received for those taxes are pretty decent

Re: Mercury might leave WI

you guys ever had any relatives work or worked your self in a coal mine?

A modern manufacturing plant is no coal mine.

That said, those miners know what they are walking into, and whether there is a union there or not, the danger is still the same. Yet generation after generation keep doing it. Seems like they have made a choice.

Most of these guy have no idea what unions were, only what they are now.

Exactly, its what the unions are now, how they are run, and who is running them.

That like saying we should've supported Saddam Huessien, because he was a really nice guy and helped a lot of people, before he killed 400,000 of them.

Not so. Very few union members here now.
Approximately 13 percent of the workforce, most of which are Federal, state, county, and local employees.

Latest figures I've seen puts private sector union membership at around 4%.

Other than Milwaukee and Racine areas, the rust is gone.

I would say Michigan and Illinois are very similar.

I don't think it will matter much when fuel gets up to $10 a gal. They will all be looking to do something else. I am very glad to be out of the marine business. The dealers around here have a lot of birthday boats from last year that they are still trying to sell. So raising the cost of the engines will not help things.
Our dollar is devalued so much......another topic another time.

Most the rust here is gone too, torn down and sold for scrap.
Along with the union membership yeah they left 30 years ago.
The city I live in was all heavy industrial and was all unionized it is all gone and has been for quite some time.
Gubmint is the only union that can really "make it" now em days but it seems their day may be coming soon as well, not soon enough IMO.

WI, land of no new jobs, kinda laughed when I saw the spots Harley was scouting to replace its unionized assembly facility at York PA.
Murfreesboro, Tenn
Shelbyville, Ky
Kansas City, Mo

And Mercury Marine wants to what ? Move outboard production to Stilwater ? Surely hourly wage averages are lower there but I've got to imagine Stillwater is union ?

All those places you listed are Right to Work States. No unions.

Mercury marine is mercury marines company.... and they should be allowed to run it as they see fit in order to stay in business. They unions should not stand in the way...

The reason they want to move to Stillwater, OK is because there is NO union there, and the company has some control in its own company....

Hopefully they stay in Wisconsin

I am suprised this is still open. The Union should let the vote go with a yes, a job is better than no job, and it IS NOT A CUT IN PAY. They will have a 401 instead of a pension now, and new hires will get less. I think if I worked there that would be ok, I have to look out for my family.

Yep, the difference being that an employer cannot make union membership a requirement of employment.

Membership or non-membership...

Employees start a Union and the Company is against it, they just fire them and move on...

That is the way it should be,....

Re: Mercury might leave WI

If the unions vote causes Mercury to move then hopefully the best thing to come out this is a continuing re-centering of unionizations and unions usefullness these days.
Up here in Canada we are seeing the same thing particularly in the Forest sector. Unions are fixated on not changing anything on their behalf. They want it to stay the way it was in the 80's and 90's....period.
They are being asked more and more to become business partners with their employers and even put their money where their mouth is and buy into the company a bit which is a good thing. Once they get a taste of actually having to be responsible for the economic results of their job they seem to change their tune on 'unlimited overtime', 'not my job-description', triple time, etc, etc. This 'us and them' mentality is dieing....thank god.
Get on board, the trains leaving the station. ;)
As the saying goes, the future belongs to those who adapt and change with it.
Just my two bits.

Mercury Marine union in Wis. rejects concessions

Mercury Marine union in Wis. rejects concessions

(AP) ? 1 hour ago

FOND DU LAC, Wis. ? Union workers at Mercury Marine put their jobs at risk Sunday when they rejected a package of wage and benefit concessions the boat engine maker said it needed or it would move their work to a nonunion plant in Oklahoma.

Union leaders did not immediately release Sunday's tally but said the vote was "overwhelming" to reject what the company called its final offer.
