what to wipe transom down with before primer? thanks for any input!
Some of the guys as well as myself used a 50% water and 50% vinegar solution to wipe down aluminum prior to primer/paint. My avatar was created out of my frustration to find a boat months ago. I had heard of a table boat before.....so I fig it would be a funny avatar.. lol :D

Appears these corners of the splashwells are starting to crack! Do they need welded? IMAG0277.jpg

I want to do a real thorough inspection before decking goes in. I already have my gluvit. Where to pay close attention? Transom out and new one cut with extra gr ply. Epoxy or ? For transom? Does the hull NEED to be stripped if painting? Thanks again
You'll probably catch any real bad spot. I made sure to get all the rivets and seams with gluvit. Somewhere in this mad house it says to make the transom out of 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood (I think most of use used exterior grade) glued together with epoxy and at least 2 coats of epoxy to seal it. Also a couple screws to hold it together. As for stripping it, that's up to you. If the old paint is still down tight, and you leave it on, you won't need any etching primer, but still paint primer. Save you some time. For the splash wall corners, I'd rivet an aluminum patch over them with something like JBweld, labmetal, or similar putty to smooth out the corners and seal the old crack. There are several types. If you are really worried about looks, take the splashwell out and patch it on the inside that soesn't show, and just hid the crack with the putty. Jayb is right on the vinegar water wipe down. Vinegar has acid in it, and is real good for getting other residues off.

What type construction, road, house, etc? I do road construction myself. From what I saw in Iowa this June, there may be a lot there to do by now. And take good care of your helper, mine have been gone for years, just married my last son off in June. They grow up all too soon.

Jetter could someone.... hammer down and tack weld the two boogered spots? or even weld a small filler piece inside the frame in that spot to make it structurally sound again? :D.

If that was me I would take it to the guy near you who does the sand blasting and have him blast that. Then take 2 pieces of steel and either put one on each side drill through it and bolt them together sandwiching the bent metal between.Or you could just bang it and add one strip and weld it if you have a welder.Any welding shops would do that for cheap.Either way thats a pretty easy repair and will be stronger after repaired than it was originally.

You may have to add the same thickness under the axle on the spots where its bolted to the frame to keep the axle level.Still seems like a pretty easy thing to do as it doesnt take much to undo those.

The task of rehabbing these old trailers has now lost some of it's appeal....

So your saying there's a chance! :D

I agree with the refab on the trailer, it will likely be strong. I never go as far as stronger than original because if some goof wouldnt of done what they did it would still be strong! That is my own personal crabby belief though ;)

Welcome to the Starcraft fleet Jetterbug:)

That SS will be a great boat for you and a great hobby/obsession too.

Tough luck for construction lately, glad you are able to make the best of it and spend time with your boy. Boat restorations make for great quality time with the family;)

Good luck to ya!

That's a great idea. I will do! Does the axle need slid back? My bunks will get replaced. They are about 14" short of the transom...

I was recently quoted a price of $1500 for a brand new galvanized bunk trailer. The task of rehabbing these old trailers has now lost some of it's appeal. Been there, done that, friggin' hated it.

Wow. I wasn't aware of that. I def will consider that! I may have to wait on the new trailer tho. May have to shape this one up for now! Thanks EZ

Ammm I dunno if the axles need to be moved back... I think that changes the weight distribution of your boat etc... I think EZ did something with axle or tongue movement..in his resto if I remember. AS far as the bunks mine were only a few inches short of the rear of the trailer.. I actually extended mine to the end. So the bunks will start to guide just as the first roller touches the hull. :D

Yeah I moved my axle back. You can see how far I moved it in this pic http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/DSCF2714.jpg (rusty spot)

Sliding the axle back will set it in the last adjustable hole...that's why holes are there, right? I just like the idea of the tie downs directly underneath the eye hooks. Mine is over a foot in front of the transom. Does that make sense? So appears I need to extend rear of trailer as you did... Thanks ez:)
