I have a 1986 Force 125hp Motor. It idles GREAT! and starts QUICKLY. Nice PURR when it idles. But when I put it into gear forward or reverse, the engine likes to die. WHY? What can I do? It was just taken out of storage, so maybe that has something to do with it, but if the fuel was bad, it wouldnt be idling nicely, correct? Seems like i need to make an adjustment somewhere or replace some gears?? :( Not good for the starting battery and the starter motor, since I have to restart it quite a bit. Or I get lucky and I am not able to catch it and place it back into Neutral before it dies, by getting it idling good again and then try putting it back into gear.

idle speed might be set too low. set exactly as the manual says.

Bravo you have no idea how many times we see that question asked on here. There should be a sticky on it..your idle is too low. Loosen the nut on the idle screw located on the tower shaft and turn the idle screw clockwise until it shift without dying. Tighten the nut when you're done.

There is a couple of reasons for this..
1 idle to low

2 Timing make sure the advance is set correctly

3 and this maybe the problem prop pitch.

I have a 120hp swinging a big pitch prop and I have to have the idle set quite high for the engine to hold on when I engage the gears. With a smaller pitch prop I can drop the rev's back quite a way..

Cheers.

Hi Rover, what pitch is your prop? Mine is 19" and I wonder if that's part of my idle problem too. Thanks, GK

Basics first.Compression/spark test.You have a tach?The rpm's should be about 750-800.
Check these things first then come back with the results.J

I FIXED IT! It was IDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW, nothing else!

After it dying time after time on the trailer at launch I was able to get it revving in neutral. Then timing it right got it to go into gear. Got on the lake in a cove where it was calm wind, anchored it and made an adjustment on the IDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW. The SELOC manual doesn't do a good job at showing me a location in a picture for my engine with two carburetors, the hardest part was finding the screw!

Anyways. That was it! This motor is 25 years old, I bought the boat off of eBay and it runs like it is 3 years old!! I am so thrilled!

Next projects: installing Seachoice Fuel/Water Seperator, Fixing the trim cylinder piston (it tilts down on its own weight)

FYI- Now is the time, Amazon has the Seachoice Fuel/Water Seperator on sale for $16. Think I'm going to do it too.

Where? I just checked and it was $20.99 - for $16 I'd snap one up too
