Otte - the best thing to do is post in the Johnson/Evinrude forums. You have to remove the shift/throttle cables, steering cable, gas line and the main boat side wiring harness and finally (a guess on this) a tilt/trim wiring harness. And the 4 bolts through the transom. They will want to know what year, model and serial no. If you had a Mercury I could give more detail, but what I mentioned are common for any O/B. I just don't know the exact nuts and bolts for your motor. Do you have a manual?

get a buddy and a camcorder and document the disassembly, in detail

there are some engine hoisting threads in resto I believe

your other best friends other than video and pictures are ziploc bags, a sharpie, a multimeter, and about 2 cases of beer per week, at the least

and in MI, a garage heater...........lol

I think I also went thru 200 pairs of rubber gloves, but I had a lease, with an option to buy

Do you own rubber gloves?

Otte, remove the electrical and throttle and shift controls at the motor. The control cables should be fairly self explanatory. For the electrical, it's just a big plug that gets separated and fat positive and negative leads that are bolted on. I'm not gear head an I've done it a bunch of times. Don't over think it.

Well - Not much time to work on the boat today. Between coat shopping at Sears, basketball, soccer games and the contently ringing phone I had trouble getting traction. I did disconnect the wires and throttle controls so all that is left is to loosen and lift the engine off the transom. Sweet.

Sunday - Church then hunting with a buddy, sleep and hunt again Monday morning and afternoon. Grade my last two courses and then Monday night I may have this engine off. I hope that means that I will have the last bit of floor and transom out by Tuesday afternoon and can start cutting and putting resin on them.

I am going to order my Gluvit and Epoxy Resin today. I think, from what I have read in other restores, that I will need 1 quart of Gluvit and about 2 gallons Epoxy Resin. My plan is to put the Epoxy under the floor and edges as well as both sides of the transom and edges there. I know it depends on the thirst level of the wood but does this sound about right?

I found an interesting product and distributor for the Epoxy. I can get it in 1.5 gallons so I could order 3 gallons which should get me there without skimping. I can get the cold temp hardner for additional $7 so that will take the cost, not including shipping, $96/1.5 gallons. http://www.epoxyusa.com/default.asp
That should put my floor at around $330.00-$350.00.

Sounds good to me. 1 quart just did my 18'. Start from the back and work front too make sure the most important gets hit. I'd get the 3 gallons of epoxy.

Motor off and most of the top of the gunnel hardware off. My boys and I manhandled the engine and got it in the family truckster tonight.

A problem I encountered. The gunnels seem to overlap the transom in the back (see pictures) and I predict a tough time getting the transom out with that piece there. Have any of you encountered the same problem? Is it as easy as cutting 1 inch of the gunnel then just putting a corner piece there later? If it is a matter of cutting then I won't worry about the aluminum chunk that I can't get off the one side and I will cut it off.

Speaking of the top of gunnel - What have you folks done with the screws when painting? Is it a mater of masking them all, remove them or just paint over top of them? I guess I don't know the purpose of them unless there is a double later of aluminum there and the screws hold those layers together. I have two areas cut out in the trim. Ideas?

Yah, to pull your transom out you'll need to bend those gunwale pieces back or carefully cut away enough for clearance but not too much that the cap can't cover.

I don't know what your screws are for so I'm thinking they could be removed prior to painting. All rivets get hit with paint anyway.

Thought I would update.

Wednesday my sons and I drilled, cut and undid many rivets and bolts. I bent back parts of the gunwales and then we managed to pull out the old transom. It is almost in one piece so usable for the template. Good news for me. I will have pictures up tomorrow of what I was and am looking at for you folks that are interested.

My gluvit and epoxy resin have both arrived already so Friday will be a scrubbing and power wash day with hopes of putting the gluvit in soon after. It would be great if I could gluvit on Friday but we will see how dry it gets on Friday. I may have to wait until Saturday then flip the boat and start sanding and painting the underside. I figure then I can paint the boat while I cut and epoxy the floor and transom.

Things went well but it was a six hour day, off and on, to get all the back hardware off and get the transom out. The toughest spot were the six bolts out of the middle of the transom by the knee brace. Oh well it is off and now it will be a matter of elbow grease and patience.

Thanks again to all that are involved with helping me. I am having fun and the kids are starting to get interested in the project. Perfect!

Well I seriously over estimated my time and power to get things done. However, I did make some head way on the boat.

Transom - out
Last bit of floor - out
Odds and sods - out

Picture #1 is my wife helping me out with that little piece of wood in the bow. She has smaller hands than I do but it still took the two of us 1.5 hours to get 4 bolts out of one side. Any ideas on how to make this effort more efficient? The space is small the there are braces holding it in place that are facing opposite directions that prevent me from prying it out.

#2 is the dirty version of the floor. I guess it will have to wait to be cleaned until the 26th.

#3 The rats nest of wires by the controller. I have resigned myself to rewiring the stinker. It was a train wreck under there.

#4 Here are the odds and sods that are now out of the boat and in the shed.

#5 Is one side of what appears to be the original transom. I bit rotten eh?

I will include some more pictures in the lower post.

I can only upload five pictures so here are some more.

Picture #1 I found two more of these under the floor at the seams of the plywood sections. They seem flimsy... did you all put them back into the boat when the floors where re-done?

Picture #2 Here is the transom from the splashwell view. The top pieces just came right out. I used the screw in hooks as handles and the old transom slid out with little persuasion. That was a nice gift.

Picture #3 Stripped bolt head and a rusty threaded side left me with little option. I snapped it but think I can still use it as a template.

Picture #4 I have three of these tabs that hold the console windows in place stuck on the passenger side console. Are these easy/cheap to get? If so I am going to cut them off and put new stuff in when I put humpty back together again.
