Running thoughts right now. I picked a Tempress 1115 Tackle Hatch Storage Sys White one for $40 on ebay.

Damn you STOLE that, do they have any more?

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

I will let you know what I find out about the product. I wonder about the grade of plastic if it is of hardy stock. I was told you could even put them into a deck like we have in the bow seating without a problem. I am skeptical about that but hold my judgment until I get mine and can speak with more authority.

I go on ebay 2-3x per day and do a quick scan of marine products so you may get lucky and find something yet.

Otte, what are bunks, or bunk sides?

Not sure what you mean. Bunks are on trailers. Can you clarify?

Thanks

As far as pre-made hatches, you can probably do better making them yourself, or at
least, hit the boneyard. There is a huge salvage south of you near Toledo I believe.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

For those of you that have helped me take apart and put this stinker back together here are some pictures from last summer. I am working on hooking up all the electronics now and finishing the last stages of boat reconstruction. Sorry for the time away. Work, family and actually using the boat got in the way. Thanks all and I will get some more photos up that show some more detail.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Here are some more pictures of the boat. It is coming along and the electrical components and wiring is in the boat now. I have the fish/depth finder, stereo (for the kids - teenagers), courtesy lights (6), Nav and anchor lights, bilge all set up on the fuse box and switch. I struggled most with the placement of the stereo speakers. There is not a ton of room in a 16 footer to place speakers. 0716131016(1).jpg
The front speakers were fairly easy but the back required a bit of fabrication and thought.
0716131016b.jpg The two back speakers were mounted inside PVC end caps. I first mounted the caps with pop rivets to the top and sides of the corner of splashwell then attached the speakers.

I could not find a switch plate in town that was small enough in my price range. iboats has some cool items but I was in a rush so a made this little number out of some spare aluminum and put my iboats purchase switches on the plate. Nothing fancy but not much is on my boat so it seems to work with the overall look.0716131015.jpg

Here is a look of the sides of the boat. It was a while back but some may remember that I got some cedar from a local sawmill and had an old telephone/power pole cut to fit my needed thickness and put them in the boat. So here is a look at the dash and sides again. I reinforced the cedar with a backing of 1/4 exterior ply that I coated with marine urethane, gorilla glued and clamped. 0716131017b.jpg0716131016(1).jpg

I wanted a something for the boat that I could use for extra passengers but I was not keen on one or two seats cluttering up the space behind the driver and "shot gun" seat. I also wanted just a slight step up to cast from when fishing. This bench goes almost the full width of beam with total height of a 10" lift off the deck. I think that a cushion along that back portion of the splashwell is the next installment toward boat completion. 0716131017a.jpg

She came out really nice, Otte. Great looking wood - telephone pole and all. Too bad using your creation has kept you away. :D Keep on having fun! :joyous:

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

Okay pictures are out of the way now for the questions.
1. PO had broken the bilge pump fitting from the pump hose. I installed a new pump and hose but I am struggling with getting the broken fitting out so I can install a new fitting. There is no way to rig up the hose on the current hull fitting as there is very little of the interior hull fitting left. Do I drill/mangle/cut/swear at/beg the old hull fitting out or is there a way to finesse these stinkers out.

2. I believe my fuel pump and/or solenoid has gone bad. I know there are some threads about installing these items on an Evinrude 50 VRO but can any of you direct me to a start to completed project that has pictures. Pictures and shiny things... it's the way I roll. I won't bore you with the details on this but as an FYI - Did a spay in Evinrude carb cleaner, changed plugs and fuel filter and fuel cell hook-up before the Canada trip 2 weeks ago. Engine was purring and running great until Thursday night and Friday of the trip. Wednesday I noticed the primer bulb was not staying hard when I pumped it. Rats. Later I noticed the engine would lug and lose power when the fuel cell was at 1/4 tank with the final day the engine would run for 3-5 min. at WOT then lug and cut out. I could get the engine to start and idle and even run at trolling speed no problem to get back to dock. All this leads me to believe I have a fuel supply issue.

3. I painted my hull with rustoleum and have been pleased with the result. The paint is tough and cheap with touch ups easy to do without the high cost or hassle of two stage paint. The paint went on last year and I could smell the paint still gassing out all last summer and fall. This summer the paint is hard without much of that fresh paint smell. Unlike last year, when I pulled the boat out of its 1 week stay in the water at Wilson Lake in Port Loring, ON this year I noticed a bubbling of paint much like the texture and size of a new football or basketball. I was concerned but not overly worried. Within a week the texture was gone and surface was smooth again. I wonder of the oil in the paint last summer counter acted any water penetration and now I should put a thick coat of wax on the hull a couple times each summer to protect the paint. Thoughts?

I should add to #2. I wonder if I should go with a non VRO fuel pump and pre-mix my own fuel. I am a huge fan of the Keep It Simple Stupid way of life. I believe it is possible to disconnect and leave the current fuel pump and place a non VRO on the fuel side of the engine.(?)

Thanks man. The boat has been fun in so many ways. Family and friends love it and it has given me a creative and problem-solving outlet that not many other activities can do for me.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

many folks do disable the VRO but i'd think long and hard first. what about testing it with an electric fuel pump temporarily hooked up to the fuel side? i think you'rre 100% correct on it being fuel issue but this would nail it down for sure.

or maybe you just need to stick a Viagra in your primer bulb?:D

I would be okay checking it with an electric fuel pump. Do you or have you done this before? Do you have an electric pump in mind? I want to make sure I get the correct p.s.i. so I don't blow my carbs up... correct?

Viagra... hmmm. Since my primary pump is currently working fine I don't have any of those blue pills in my tool kit. A fine idea however and one to keep in mind for a flaccid primer bulb in the future.

Boat looks great Otte, nice details on the interior. I personally don't like the VRO system and have bypassed it on any I have owned. If you mix gas there is never a question on if it is getting oil. Here is link to a bunch of info on the subject, http://forums.iboats.com/johnson-evinrude-outboards/vro-premix-388154.html Just post a question if you need a part number for the regular fuel pump and someone will jump right in.

Thanks Dozer. I think the mix ratio is 50:1 for the 1989 Evinrude 50 h.p. I will definitely be going with a non-VRO pump. The lack of availability and price bump of the VRO compared to the non-VRO helped me make a pretty fast decision. I wonder if you, or anyone else, could answer a potentially dumb question... "will find 3 bosses, 2 bolt holes, and center on with a plug in", what does the "3 bosses" mean?

I also wonder if I should get rid of the quick release fitting on the motor and go with a direct link from the fuel cell to the fuel pump. Another thought of mine is to move the in-line fuel filter within that direct link connection but move it outside the engine and closer the the fuel cell. Any extra space under the cowl would be nice. I don't have sausage fingers (more like sausage links) but only wafer thin hands can work in some of those spaces.

Re: My 16 Foot Super Sport

For what it's worth Otte, I like to put the fuel filter close to the tank before the bulb. My thinking is keeping crud out of the bulb is a good thing.

Bosses mean, from an online dictionary "A round knob, stud, or other protuberance, in particular". In motor talk, there are three stick-outs on the block with a machined, flat mounting surface. In your case two have threaded holes for bolts and one plugged threaded hole.

Or it means your Mom, Mother in-law and wife, in no particular order.
